Yes—if your iPhone is still running iOS 18.2, back it up and install the newest compatible update Apple offers. iOS 18.2 was released on December 11, 2024, and Apple has since issued later security updates. The version you can install depends on your iPhone model, so check Settings > General > Software Update rather than assuming every phone can run the same release.
Why you should move on from iOS 18.2
iOS 18.2 is an old release, not the current security baseline. Apple’s iOS 18 update history lists later releases, including iOS 18.7.10, which Apple describes as providing security fixes for iPhone. Apple’s security guidance recommends using the latest iOS version when possible. Apple’s iOS 18 update history and its security release list show the subsequent releases.
There is a specific reason not to treat 18.2 as sufficient protection: its security advisory describes vulnerabilities Apple fixed in that release, including an issue that could allow Photos in the Hidden Photos Album to be viewed without authentication. The advisory also covers other issues involving system components, malicious apps, crafted images or web content, and authentication. Updates released after 18.2 contain further security fixes; installing 18.2’s fixes alone does not provide the protections in those later releases. Apple’s iOS 18.2 security advisory lists the issues addressed.
Which update should you install?
Install the newest compatible update shown on your iPhone. Apple’s available release list includes iOS 27.0.1 and iOS 26.7.1, both dated September 28, 2026, as well as iOS 26.6.2 dated September 8, 2026, and iOS 18.7.10 dated August 17, 2026. These releases are device-specific; their presence on Apple’s list does not mean they are all offered to every iPhone.

Apple says Software Update displays only updates compatible with that device. Its iOS 26 installation instructions list compatible models and explain the update process. If you depend on older workflows or use an iPhone managed by an employer or school, check the relevant app requirements or administrator policy before installing a major upgrade; the compatibility list alone does not address those specific needs.
Back up first, then check for an update
- Back up your iPhone. Apple recommends making a backup before downloading and installing an update. Use the backup option you normally rely on, and confirm it has completed before proceeding.
- Open Settings > General > Software Update. Wait for the phone to check for available releases.
- Review the version and details shown. This screen presents updates compatible with your iPhone.
- Tap Download and Install if an update is offered, then follow the on-screen instructions.
- If the version you expected is not listed, confirm your exact iPhone model and use the compatible update Apple offers rather than trying to infer eligibility from another model’s update.
Apple says you cannot return to the previous iOS version after installing an update. That makes a completed backup an important step, particularly before a major-version upgrade. Apple’s update instructions cover backing up and installing; its security update list notes that updates cannot be rolled back to the prior version.

Is iOS 18.2 safe to keep using?
An iPhone that remains on 18.2 may still function, but that is different from being up to date on security fixes. Apple Support says, “Keeping your software up to date is the single most important thing you can do to maintain the security of your Apple products,” in its April 2, 2026 guidance on protecting iPhone from web attacks. If your phone cannot install the newest major iOS version, install the newest compatible security release it offers.

When it arrived, iOS 18.2 brought Apple Intelligence features along with enhancements, fixes, and security updates. That history may explain why someone installed it, but it is not a reason to remain on it now that later releases are available. Apple’s iOS 18.2 security advisory gives its release date as December 11, 2024 and describes the security issues fixed in that version.
