Splitting money among separately chartered, FDIC-insured banks can provide additional coverage. But opening more accounts—or using different branches of the same bank—does not automatically increase it. The key is how much you hold at each bank in each ownership category.
How FDIC coverage works
The FDIC’s standard maximum is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, for each account ownership category, according to its Your Insured Deposits brochure, updated April 1, 2024. The limit applies to eligible deposits if an insured bank fails—not to each individual account.
At one bank, the FDIC adds together your deposits in the same ownership category. Savings, checking, money market deposit accounts, and certificates of deposit (CDs) in that category count toward the same limit. Accrued interest through the bank’s closing is included, so leave room below the limit if your balance is close to it. The FDIC’s coverage principles explain how deposits are aggregated.
When splitting savings can help
If your deposits in a category at one insured bank could exceed the applicable limit, moving some to a separately chartered, FDIC-insured bank can give those funds a separate limit. For example, two distinct insured banks are treated separately even if they are affiliated. By contrast, two branches—or two brands operating under the same bank charter—do not create two limits.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Splitting is not necessary solely to gain more FDIC coverage when your deposits already fit within the applicable limit. Different qualifying ownership categories may provide separate coverage at the same bank, but the categories depend on legal ownership and FDIC rules; having both a checking and a savings account does not create different categories by itself. See the FDIC’s deposit insurance FAQ for category details.
What multiple banks do—and do not—protect
FDIC insurance protects eligible deposits against the failure of an insured bank, within the applicable limits. It does not insure stocks, bonds, or mutual funds simply because a bank or financial institution holds or sells them. More accounts can also mean more practical work: tracking balances, statements, and transfers. That is a management trade-off, not an FDIC requirement.

Do not assume that an account held through a broker or other third party automatically receives coverage for each underlying owner. Pass-through coverage depends on meeting applicable requirements, including records that identify the actual owners. When it applies, the funds are attributed to those owners and combined with their other deposits in the same category at that bank. The FDIC describes these conditions in its pass-through deposit insurance guidance.

How to decide and check your coverage
- Identify the institution. Confirm that each institution is a separately chartered, FDIC-insured bank; a different branch or brand may be the same bank.
- Total deposits by bank and ownership category. Include savings, checking, money market deposit accounts, and CDs held in that category.
- Allow for accrued interest. Interest through a bank’s closing counts toward the insured balance.
- Check product eligibility. Confirm that the money is in an eligible deposit product, not an investment such as a mutual fund.
- Use the FDIC Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator. The FDIC FAQ points readers to this tool for checking an individual scenario. It is especially useful when you have joint, trust, beneficiary, or third-party arrangements; review your account titling and bank records as well.
