If that leaves you short, choose a higher limit in 5% steps—or keep the limit at 100% and use Optimized Battery Charging. No setting guarantees a particular battery lifespan.
What the 80% charge limit does
On iPhone 15 models and later, you can set a Charge Limit from 80% to 100% in 5% increments. The phone stops charging near the limit; Apple says it may stop within a few percentage points. If the charge level drops by more than five percentage points while the iPhone remains connected to power, charging resumes toward the limit. With a limit below 100%, the phone may occasionally charge to 100% to keep its state-of-charge estimates accurate. Apple’s Charge Limit guidance explains the behavior.
To find the setting, open Settings > Battery > Charging. You can change or remove the limit there. iOS may also recommend a limit based on your charging patterns. Apple’s iPhone guide describes the setting and recommendation.
Choose a limit that fits your day
Use 80% if it covers your normal routine
At 80%, you unplug with less charge available than you would at a higher limit. The tradeoff may suit you if you regularly charge during the day or leave the iPhone connected for long periods, and 80% is enough for your typical use. Apple identifies lower limits as potentially useful for frequent charging or long periods connected to power. The benefit is less time at a high charge level—not a promised number of extra months, cycles, or percentage points of battery health.

Choose a higher limit if you need more headroom
If 80% does not reliably get you through the day, increase the limit in 5% steps until the available charge fits your routine. You do not have to treat 80% as a target everyone should use. A practical approach is to start with the highest limit that still matches your preference for reducing time at a high charge, then adjust if it proves inconvenient.
Keep 100% available when capacity matters most
On iPhone 15 and later, Optimized Battery Charging is available when Charge Limit is set to 100%. It learns your routine and, in some situations, delays charging past 80% so the phone spends less time fully charged. This retains access to full capacity when needed, but it depends on the iPhone learning a predictable routine. Apple says learning takes at least 14 days and requires at least nine charges of five hours or more in a given location. Check your iPhone model before changing settings
The selectable Charge Limit is documented for iPhone 15 models and later. For these models, use Settings > Battery > Charging to set a limit. iPhone 14 models and earlier do not have the same selectable Charge Limit; Apple documents Optimized Battery Charging for them under Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. Remember that charge limit is only one part of battery care
Battery aging is affected by more than the selected limit, including temperature history. Apple advises avoiding use or charging in ambient temperatures above 95°F (35°C), which it says can permanently reduce battery lifespan. Details are in Apple’s battery-care guidance, published April 8, 2025.

Apple also publishes design figures for how much original capacity different iPhone generations are designed to retain under ideal conditions: 80% after 500 complete charge cycles for iPhone 14 models and earlier, and 80% after 1,000 complete charge cycles for iPhone 15 models and later. These are Apple’s design statements, not guarantees for an individual phone or evidence that selecting an 80% limit will produce a particular result. You can adjust or remove the limit in Settings > Battery > Charging. If 80% is inconvenient, move it up in 5% increments; if you need full capacity for a particular day, choose 100%. Your preferred setting can reflect your schedule rather than a permanent rule.
