A response can confirm that your number is active or invite further contact. But if the sender is a legitimate organization you recognize, replying STOP is a normal way to opt out. The right choice depends on who sent the message—not on the word “STOP” itself.
When is it safe to reply STOP?
Reply STOP when you recognize the organization, believe its message is legitimate, and no longer want to receive its texts. The Federal Communications Commission recognizes reply texts as a reasonable, widely understood way to revoke consent; its rules also allow alternative methods when a messaging protocol does not support replies. CTIA says automated messages should provide an opt-out route, commonly STOP. FCC 24-24 (2024) · CTIA Spam Feature
Do not treat STOP as a safe response to every message that calls itself a subscription or offers an unsubscribe option. If you do not recognize the sender, or the text seems suspicious, do not reply—even just to opt out. CTIA’s consumer guidance puts it plainly: “Don’t reply to texts you don’t recognize—even to say ‘STOP.’” CTIA: Protecting Yourself from Spam Text Messages
Why can replying to an unknown text be risky?
A reply tells the sender that the number can receive messages and that someone is reading them. The FTC warns that even a brief response to an apparent wrong-number text can confirm it reached a working telephone number. That can encourage further contact, but it does not mean every reply will cause more spam or that a scammer will necessarily sell the number. - COMPATIBILITY: For traditional analog landline phones and services from providers such as AT&T, Verizon, Frontier Communications, CenturyLink, and Brightspeed. Not compatible with internet-based or digital phone services (VoIP), including Vonage, Ooma, Xfinity Voice, and Quantum Fiber.
- IMPORTANT: The V5000 CPR Call Blocker requires Caller ID service and an analog telephone line. Without Caller ID, incoming numbers cannot be identified or blocked. No mains power required - just plug it into your phone line and use.
- Powerful Blocking, Made Simple: Preloaded with 5,000 verified scam and nuisance numbers, the V5000 starts protecting you right out of the box. And if a new or spoofed number gets through, the large “BLOCK NOW” button makes it easy to instantly block it - up to 1,500 additional numbers at your command.
- Realistic & Reliable Protection: While no device can stop 100% of spam (scammers constantly change numbers), the V5000 gives you the power to shut down repeat offenders quickly and effectively - offering more control than passive filters alone.
- Hassle-Free Design: NO POWER supply needed, NO APP, and NO SUBSCRIPTIONS. The V5000 is easy to install, with a clear screen and loud button click for extra confidence. Designed with seniors in mind, it’s ready to use and simple to maintain. For even stronger protection, you can pair it with your phone provider’s spam filtering service.
Scam texts may impersonate a delivery service, bank, toll agency, employer, or lender, or use a wrong-number opening to start a conversation. Watch for unexpected requests for money or personal information, pressure to act quickly, and links to supposed account or delivery problems. Texting is attractive to scammers in part because messages can be seen quickly: an FTC consumer alert cites a study reporting text-message open rates as high as 98%. That statistic is about opening texts, not the effect of replying STOP. FTC: Is That Unexpected Text a Scam?
What to do with a suspicious or unwanted text
- Pause before acting. Don’t click links, call numbers in the message, or share information. If the text could relate to a real account, package, toll, job, or loan, check through the company’s official app, website, or phone number that you find independently. FTC: Is That Unexpected Text a Scam?
- Report it, rather than replying. Use your messaging app’s report-junk or report-spam option, if available, or forward the text to 7726 (SPAM). The FTC says forwarding helps wireless providers identify and block similar messages; CTIA also recommends the 7726 reporting route. - Delete the message and block or filter the sender. Blocking may reduce messages from that number, while filtering tools can help screen messages from unknown senders. No single setting guarantees that unwanted messages can never reach you again.
- Report suspected fraud to the FTC. For a scam, use ReportFraud.ftc.gov. CTIA directs consumers to the FCC for suspected illegal texts, calls, or spoofing scams. CTIA: Protecting Yourself from Spam Text Messages
How to reduce spam texts on your phone
Menu names and available controls vary by phone, operating-system version, messaging app, and carrier. Look in your messaging app for the conversation’s sender details or message options, and check your phone’s messaging or notification settings for unknown-sender filtering. Your wireless provider may offer additional spam reporting or filtering tools. Some third-party call-blocking apps also filter texts, but verify that an app supports your device and messaging platform, and review its privacy practices before granting access.
