Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →On Windows, the safest habit is to wait for transfers to finish, then use Eject when it’s available and wait for the safe-removal notification. Microsoft recommends safely removing USB flash drives and external drives before disconnecting them. There is a nuance: Windows 10 version 1809 and later use Quick removal as the default policy, but that does not make unplugging during an active transfer safe.
Myth 1: You must always eject a USB drive—or it will be damaged
That overstates the risk. Microsoft’s guidance is to safely remove a drive to avoid losing data; it does not say that skipping Eject inevitably destroys a drive or its files. The practical concern is that a write may still be in progress or that the device’s removal policy may require safe removal.
Microsoft Support says: “To avoid losing data, always safely remove hardware devices like USB flash drives or external hard drives before disconnecting them.” Its Windows instructions are to select Eject for the device and wait for the safe-removal notification before unplugging. Microsoft’s safe-removal guidance is the straightforward choice when the option is available.
Windows’ removal policy changes the nuance
Microsoft Learn says Quick removal is the default for external storage devices beginning with Windows 10 version 1809. It is designed to keep a device ready for removal. The alternative, Better performance, can improve performance by enabling write caching, but requires using Safely Remove Hardware before disconnecting. The policy can be changed for an individual external device. See Microsoft’s removal-policy documentation.

- USB-C 2-in-1 storage OTG: The Lexar JumpDrive Dual Drive D40E features USB Type-A and Type-C connectors in a slim, portable form factor for easy device compatibility
- Transfer speeds up to 100MB/s: Based on internal testing, performance may vary depending upon the host device, interface, and usage conditions. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes
- Plug and Play: Widely compatible with USB Type-C smartphones, tablets, laptops, Macs, and traditional Type-A devices, no software installation required. The 360° swivel design allows for easy switching between connectors without the hassle of losing a cap
- Durable & Compact: The Lexar D40E USB memory stick features a metal enclosure, withstands temperatures from 0° to 50° C (32°F to 122°F), and is lightweight at 26g with dimensions of 70.4 x 16.9 x 11.7mm
- Security & Warranty: Securely protects files using an advanced security software solution with 256-bit AES encryption. Backed by a Lexar 3-year limited warranty
So Quick removal explains why a drive may often unplug without an obvious problem; it is not a guarantee that every removal is risk-free. The best routine is still to finish transfers and use safe removal, particularly if you do not know which policy is set.
Myth 2: Quick removal means you can unplug during a transfer
No. A file copy or other write in progress is a separate risk from the drive’s removal policy. Wait until the transfer finishes before disconnecting the device. Quick removal is not permission to interrupt writing, and no risk percentage is established by the cited sources.

Myths 3 and 4: The other claims cannot be responsibly identified
The supplied title names three additional USB-storage myths but does not identify them, and the available evidence does not establish which claims were intended. Inventing three myths would risk correcting claims no one made or presenting unsupported advice as fact. The evidence here supports the Windows safe-removal question and its policy nuance, not a definitive list of four myths.

- Finish active work. Wait for copies, saves, and other writes to complete.
- Select Eject. Use the Windows safe-removal command for the drive.
- Wait for confirmation. Unplug only after Windows displays the safe-removal notification.
These steps follow Microsoft’s Windows guidance. The policy details above apply to Windows 10 and 11 documentation; they do not establish current removal defaults or procedures for macOS or Linux.
