For most Windows 10 and Windows 11 users, the answer is no: keep Microsoft Defender Firewall on. It filters network traffic to help block unauthorized access. If it blocks an app you trust and need, allow that app through the firewall on the network profile where it needs access instead of disabling protection for the whole device.
What Windows Firewall does—and what turning it off changes
Microsoft describes Windows Firewall as a built-in, host-based firewall that is enabled by default. It filters network traffic using criteria such as IP addresses, protocols, ports, applications, and services. It is one layer of network protection, not a guarantee against every kind of online threat.
Disabling it removes more than traffic filtering. Microsoft warns that you also lose benefits such as IPsec connection security rules, protection against network-fingerprinting attacks, Windows Service Hardening, and boot-time filters. With the firewall off, the device may be more vulnerable to unauthorized access. Microsoft’s guidance is to leave it enabled. Microsoft Learn: Windows Firewall Overview
When might disabling it be justified?
Turning off the firewall should not be the routine fix for a blocked app or a connection problem. A temporary diagnostic test may help an administrator investigate a specific issue, but it reduces protection while the firewall is off. If troubleshooting points to a firewall rule, restore the firewall promptly and make a narrow change instead. On a work- or school-managed computer, policy may prevent changes; contact the administrator rather than trying to override it.

Do not stop the Windows Firewall service as a workaround. Microsoft does not support stopping the service and warns it can cause problems such as Start menu failures, modern app installation or update issues, phone activation failures, and application or operating-system incompatibilities. If an administrator must disable firewall protection, Microsoft documents disabling firewall profiles while leaving the service running. Choose a narrow exception instead of switching off protection
If one app is being blocked, first confirm that you recognize and trust it and that it genuinely needs network access. Microsoft recommends allowing the app through the firewall rather than turning the firewall off. Limit the rule to the network profile where the app needs access; an app that needs access on your trusted home network may not need it on public Wi-Fi. - Check the network profile. In Windows Security, open Firewall & network protection and identify whether the active network is public, private, or domain. Public is intended for less-trusted networks such as cafés, airports, and hotels; private is for a network you trust, such as your home network. Domain applies to organization-managed networks. Microsoft Support
- Allow only the needed app. On the Firewall & network protection page, choose Allow an app through firewall. Select the app and allow it only on the profile where it needs access. Windows labels and available controls can vary by version or organizational policy. If the app is not listed, use the available option to add it only if you have verified that it is legitimate.
- Review and remove the exception later. An app that no longer needs network access should no longer have a firewall allowance. If the device is managed and settings are locked, ask your administrator.
Why allowing a port is usually a riskier fix
Allowing an app and opening a port are not equivalent. Microsoft says an allowed app opens the ports it needs only when required, while an opened port remains open until it is closed. Prefer the app exception when it solves the problem; open a port only when you understand the requirement and can keep track of closing it when it is no longer needed. Microsoft Support
Make the choice based on the problem and network
| Situation | Safer choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A trusted app is blocked on your home network | Allow that app on the private profile, if it needs access there | Limits the exception to the app and relevant network context. |
| You are using café, hotel, airport, or other unfamiliar Wi-Fi | Keep the firewall enabled; avoid adding a public-profile exception unless it is essential | Public networks are less trusted than a home network. |
| You are considering opening a port for an app | Check whether allowing the app is sufficient; if a port must be opened, close it when no longer required | An opened port remains open until closed, whereas an allowed app opens required ports only as needed. |
| A work or school app is blocked, or settings are unavailable | Ask your organization’s administrator | Organizational policy may control the firewall settings and exceptions. |
| You suspect the firewall is causing a broader connection problem | Use a temporary diagnostic test only if appropriate, then turn protection back on and investigate a targeted rule | Disabling the firewall removes protections beyond the single app or connection being investigated. |
Bottom line
Keep Windows Firewall enabled in normal use. When a legitimate app is blocked, the safer fix is usually a verified, profile-specific app allowance—not disabling the firewall, stopping its service, or leaving an unnecessary port open.
