If OneDrive or another cloud app does not need to be ready as soon as you sign in to Windows, disable its automatic startup and see whether that improves your own experience. The change is reversible and does not, by itself, stop file syncing; it simply means the app will not launch automatically. Windows identifies startup apps as one possible factor in boot time and background use, but disabling OneDrive is not guaranteed to make every PC noticeably faster.
What disabling startup does—and does not do
Windows lets you prevent an app from launching automatically when you sign in while keeping it installed for later manual use. For OneDrive, that setting is separate from pausing synchronization, quitting the app, unlinking your account, or uninstalling OneDrive.
Microsoft says apps that run at startup can affect startup speed and overall performance, and recommends disabling apps you do not need to start automatically. That is general guidance, not a promise of a particular improvement from disabling OneDrive. A slow PC can have other causes too. See Microsoft’s Windows performance tips.
How to turn off an app’s automatic startup
Windows 10 and Windows 11 provide two built-in ways to manage startup apps:
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Open Settings > Apps > Startup, then switch off the app you do not want to launch at sign-in.
- Alternatively, open Task Manager > Startup apps, select the app, and choose Disable. Task Manager displays a startup-impact indicator that can help you decide which enabled apps to review first.
These controls change automatic launch; they are not the same as turning off an app’s sync or backup features. If the change disrupts your workflow, return to the same list and enable the app again. Microsoft documents both routes in Configure Startup applications in Windows.
Choose the OneDrive control that matches your goal
If the issue is sync happening at an inconvenient time, you may not need to change startup behavior. OneDrive has several distinct controls, ranging from a timed pause to removing the app from the PC.

| What you want | OneDrive action | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Prevent OneDrive from launching automatically at sign-in | Turn it off in Windows Settings > Apps > Startup or Task Manager > Startup apps. | OneDrive remains installed; the startup setting does not itself stop sync while the app is running. |
| Pause sync for a while | Select the OneDrive taskbar icon, choose Pause syncing, then select an offered duration. | Microsoft documents pause options of 2, 8, or 24 hours; syncing is scheduled to resume after the chosen period. |
| Stop sync until you reopen OneDrive | Choose the quit option from the OneDrive menu. | Sync stops while the app is quit. Launch OneDrive again to resume. |
| Stop using your OneDrive account on this PC | In OneDrive, open Settings > Account > Unlink this PC. | The PC is unlinked from the account. Cloud files remain accessible by signing in at OneDrive.com. |
| Remove OneDrive from the PC | Uninstall Microsoft OneDrive in Windows’ installed-app settings. | The local OneDrive folder stops syncing. Microsoft says cloud data remains accessible at OneDrive.com. |
Microsoft describes these choices in How to cancel or stop sync in OneDrive and Turn off, disable, or uninstall OneDrive.
Check local-file and backup needs before unlinking or uninstalling
Unlinking and uninstalling are broader changes than turning off startup or temporarily pausing sync. Before either, check whether you still need files stored locally and whether OneDrive is handling backup or sync that you rely on. Microsoft’s cited guidance says cloud data remains available online and that uninstalling stops the local OneDrive folder from syncing; it does not spell out every local-file or backup configuration.

What about other cloud apps?
The Windows startup controls can be used to manage other apps, but OneDrive’s pause, quit, unlink, and uninstall behavior should not be assumed to apply to them. Check each service’s own sync and backup settings before disabling its startup launch, especially if you rely on it to keep files backed up or available on this PC.

Disable automatic startup for one app you do not need immediately, then use the PC normally and judge whether sign-in or background activity feels better. There is no established seconds-saved figure for OneDrive on a particular PC, and Task Manager’s impact label is an indicator rather than a prediction of a guaranteed gain. If the app is useful at sign-in or the change causes a problem, turn startup back on.
