Neither option is best for every household. Renting may bundle provider-selected equipment with maintenance or support; buying can avoid a recurring equipment charge but puts compatibility, setup, and replacement on you. Compare your actual monthly equipment fee with the up-front cost of a device approved for your address, service, and speed tier—and check what support your provider offers for customer-owned equipment.

First, identify which equipment your internet service needs

A router shares an internet connection with devices on your home network. A cable modem connects cable internet service to that network. A gateway combines modem and router functions. The equipment you need depends on your service technology and provider, so “buying a router” does not necessarily replace a modem or gateway.

For example, Cox says customers whose modem does not include a router need a separate router. That is guidance for that setup, not a rule for every provider or location. Cox also says customers can use their own modem if it is certified for its network: Cox’s compatible modem guidance. Some Xfinity fiber communities can use a third-party router, but that example does not establish compatibility for other communities or services: Xfinity’s third-party device guidance.

What to compare before choosing

Consideration Renting from the provider Buying your own
Total cost Use the equipment charge shown on your current bill or plan label and multiply it by the period you expect to keep the service. Check whether equipment is included in the base price. Compare the current purchase price of a compatible device with the rental charges over the same period. Include any required modem, router, or gateway; a router alone may not be enough.
Compatibility The provider supplies equipment selected for its service, but confirm that the included device works with your plan and intended setup. You must verify that the device is accepted for your exact provider, service address, access technology, and speed tier.
Support and maintenance Provider terms may include equipment maintenance or support; check what the specific rental covers. Support varies. You may need to troubleshoot, repair, or replace your equipment yourself, and the provider may limit support for it.
Setup and replacement Ask who handles activation, troubleshooting, and replacement if the equipment fails or no longer suits your service. You are responsible for setup and replacement. Ask whether the provider will activate and troubleshoot the device, and whether a future speed upgrade could make it unsuitable.

The FCC’s broadband label materials identify equipment requirements, whether equipment is included in the base price, and applicable monthly rental or lease charges as information to disclose. Check your actual plan label and bill rather than relying on a generic fee or savings estimate: FCC broadband labels and FCC broadband consumer label materials.

  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

How to check whether a device will work

  1. Identify your service and included equipment. Find out whether your connection is cable, fiber, or another technology, and whether the plan includes a router, modem, or combined gateway.
  2. Check the provider’s current compatibility list. Use the list for your service address and plan, not just the device brand. Cox and Xfinity provide compatibility guidance, and ARRIS advises checking both the provider list and subscribed speed tier: Cox, Xfinity, and ARRIS support.
  3. For cable service, confirm modem approval and speed support. An incompatible modem may fail to connect or impair performance. ARRIS advises checking compatibility against the provider and subscribed speed tier: ARRIS support.
  4. Ask about activation and support. Confirm how customer-owned equipment is activated, whether the provider will troubleshoot it, and who handles repair or replacement. Terms differ: Shentel describes normal equipment maintenance and a mesh router with its rental modem, while Mediacom says it is not obligated to support or repair customer-owned equipment. These are provider-specific examples, not universal policies: Shentel equipment support and Mediacom customer-owned modem guidance.
  5. Recheck before upgrading or replacing equipment. Compatibility lists and provider policies can change, and a device that works with one speed tier may not suit a later plan.

When renting is the better fit

Renting is worth considering if the provider’s equipment charge is acceptable and the rental terms include support or maintenance you value. It may also reduce the work of choosing and configuring equipment. Do not assume every rental includes the same services: check the provider’s terms for support, repairs, replacements, and any equipment fees.

When buying is the better fit

Buying may make sense if you have confirmed that the equipment is approved for your service and speed tier, understand how to activate and manage it, and expect the purchase cost to compare favorably with your actual rental charges over your expected service period. Remember to buy the right type of device: a router does not replace a required cable modem, and a modem without built-in router capability may need a separate router.

Calculate your own cost comparison

Use the provider’s current equipment charge and a current price for equipment that is confirmed compatible. There is no universal rental fee or break-even period established by the cited guidance. If the provider charges a recurring rental fee, a simple comparison is:

Rental cost over your expected service period = monthly equipment charge × number of months.

Then account separately for the value of any rental support or maintenance and for your responsibility to configure, troubleshoot, repair, or replace owned equipment. The result is specific to your plan, provider, device, and how long you expect to keep the service.
