Yes—last year’s flagship can be a smart buy if its current price is meaningfully lower than comparable alternatives, it has enough official software support left for your planned ownership period, and its condition, battery, compatibility, and seller protections are solid. There is no universal discount that makes an older model worthwhile: compare the exact phone with its successor and a current mid-range model at today’s local prices.
When last year’s flagship is worth considering
An older flagship may still suit you if you value its camera, display, or build quality and can buy it at a price that reflects its age and condition. A current mid-range phone may instead offer a newer support window, longer battery life, or faster charging. The better choice depends on which differences matter in your everyday use.
Make the comparison with the exact model, storage capacity, condition, seller, and local price in view. Include taxes and fees, trade-in terms, and likely battery or repair costs. Compare what each option costs now—not an older phone’s launch price with a current competitor’s sale price—and count successor features only if you expect to use them. Check the exact model’s remaining software support
Buying an older phone today does not reset its support clock. Find the manufacturer’s official operating-system and security-support information for the exact model and variant, then compare the remaining support with how many years you plan to keep it. Support commitments are model-specific; a brand name or processor family alone does not establish how long a particular phone will receive updates.

If official support information is unclear, do not assume that the phone has the same commitment as a newer model from the same manufacturer. Treat an uncertain support timeline as a real downside when comparing prices and expected ownership.
Establish what “used” or “refurbished” means in the listing
Condition labels are not interchangeable standards. Ask who inspected or repaired the phone, what parts were replaced, whether battery condition is documented, and what warranty and return rights apply. Get those details in writing where possible; a “refurbished” label by itself does not promise a new battery or a particular warranty.

For one program-specific example, Samsung’s US Certified Re-Newed page says devices are repaired with genuine Samsung parts, including a certified new battery, and describes a 147-point quality inspection and one-year limited warranty. Those are terms for that Samsung US program, not an industry-wide definition of refurbished. Check the current terms and availability in the market where you are buying. Before paying, confirm the device is not account- or activation-locked, check its carrier-lock status, and verify that its model supports your carrier’s network and services. Ask for battery-health information where available and a record of repairs or replaced parts. Test the phone during the seller’s return or warranty period rather than waiting until it expires. Check the display and cameras, make a call, test mobile data and Wi-Fi, try Bluetooth, speakers, charging, and ports, and confirm that the phone behaves as described. Use this pre-purchase checklist
- Identify the offer: record the exact model and variant, storage, market, seller, and whether it is new old stock, used, or refurbished.
- Check support: find official OS and security-support information for that exact model and estimate how much support remains from today.
- Compare live alternatives: check the successor and a current mid-range phone with comparable storage and condition, including taxes, fees, trade-in terms, and likely repair costs.
- Get condition details: ask for cosmetic condition, battery-health information, parts or repair history, and the refurbisher’s process.
- Verify the device: check activation or account locks, IMEI status, carrier lock, and network compatibility before committing.
- Confirm your remedies: read the warranty and return terms, including who handles repairs and how long you have to report a fault.
- Test promptly: within the return or warranty window, check the display, cameras, calls, mobile data, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, charging, speakers, and ports as appropriate.
Make the decision from your own priorities
Choose last year’s flagship when its verified condition and remaining support fit your ownership plans, its price compares favorably with like-for-like alternatives, and its premium features are ones you will actually value. Choose the successor or a current mid-range phone if the older model’s support, battery, condition, compatibility, or seller terms do not justify the savings. Recheck prices, stock, support details, and seller terms when you are ready to buy; they vary by model and market.
