Neither Apple nor a carrier is automatically cheaper. Compare the exact phone, trade-in, financing, service plan, taxes and fees, and how long you must stay with a carrier to receive any promotional credits. Apple also sells carrier offers, so the meaningful choice is between checkout terms—not simply an Apple Store and a carrier store.

This comparison reflects U.S. Apple and carrier terms checked October 4, 2026. Offers, device availability, and eligibility can change; confirm the terms shown at checkout.

What changes when you buy from Apple versus a carrier?

The seller and the financing arrangement are separate choices. Apple sells iPhones with carrier financing in its own channels, and Apple’s carrier offers may be available through Apple as well as through the carrier. The key difference is often whether you pay Apple outright or use Apple financing, versus taking a carrier’s device-payment plan or promotion.

Unlocking and switching carriers

Apple says iPhones bought at full price or with an Apple financing option are unlocked. By contrast, iPhones financed through AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon are locked to that carrier until paid in full, according to Apple’s buying guidance. Check the relevant carrier’s unlock and payoff rules before choosing its installment plan. Apple’s iPhone buying page and Apple’s financing and unlocking support information describe these distinctions.

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Apple Card Monthly Installments (ACMI) are an Apple financing option, but checkout requires selecting AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon. Apple says an iPhone purchased with ACMI is unlocked. ACMI is not the same thing as taking a carrier’s device-payment plan. Apple’s ACMI terms explain the financing arrangement.

Promotions and trade-ins

A carrier promotion may lower the effective device cost through monthly bill credits, but the advertised maximum is conditional. Eligibility can depend on the trade-in model and condition, a qualifying installment plan, a specific service plan, or a new line. Credits may be paid over the full installment term, so the phone’s advertised net cost is not necessarily what you pay if you leave or change plans early. Apple lists carrier offers through its own buying channels too; compare the actual offer at both checkouts rather than assuming Apple has no carrier deals.

Rank #2
Apple iPhone 12, 64GB, Black - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • Fully unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US-Cellular, Cricket, Metro, etc.).
  • Inspected and guaranteed to have minimal cosmetic damage, which is not noticeable when the device is held at arm's length.
  • Successfully passed a full diagnostic test which ensures like-new functionality and removal of any prior-user personal information.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a charging cable that may be generic.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Trade-in values are not fixed: Apple says they vary by the device’s condition, year, and configuration. For example, Apple’s September 2026 U.S. announcement gave an instant Apple Trade In credit range of $175 to $885 for customers trading in an iPhone 13 or later. In the same announcement, Apple said eligible customers trading in an iPhone 14 or later in any condition could receive up to $1,200 in carrier credits toward an iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro Max. These are distinct offers with different conditions, not guaranteed values for every buyer. Apple’s September 2026 announcement gives the terms summarized here.

How to compare the real cost

Compare the same model and storage configuration, using the same trade-in device and condition, across each checkout option. Then include the service cost for the entire period you would need to keep the plan to receive credits. A low monthly device payment can conceal a more expensive plan or credits that stop if you leave early.

Rank #3
Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Purple - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • Vibrant 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display with OLED technology. Action mode for smooth, steady, handheld videos.
  1. Write down the device price and financing. Record the amount due up front, monthly device payments, payment term, and any credits. Separate an instant trade-in credit from credits applied to future bills.
  2. Add taxes and fees. Include upfront taxes, shipping if applicable, and recurring service charges. Apple says ACMI’s 0% APR does not apply to taxes or shipping; those amounts are subject to the Apple Card’s variable APR. For new Apple Card accounts, Apple Support listed a 17.49% to 27.74% variable APR range as of July 1, 2026. Apple’s ACMI support page explains the tax and shipping treatment.
  3. Price the required service plan over the credit period. Compare the plan you would actually choose with any more expensive plan required for a promotion. Include the months you must remain eligible, not just the first bill.
  4. Check what happens if you leave or pay early. Read the carrier’s offer terms for plan changes, early payoff, cancellation, and any remaining credits. Do not treat credits that depend on future bills as an immediate discount.
  5. Compare ownership and support needs. Full-price and installment purchases lead to ownership once paid off. Apple advertises free Personal Setup and data-transfer help, and says it can activate a new iPhone while keeping your number and plan. A carrier may be useful for account-specific activation and billing help; weigh the support you need rather than assuming either channel is universally better.

One example shows why the plan conditions matter: AT&T’s September 2026 U.S. announcement offered up to $1,200 off through 36 monthly credits, subject to an eligible trade-in, a minimum $1,200 installment plan, and AT&T Premium 2.0. The announcement listed that plan at $100 per month before taxes, fees, and discounts; offer terms said credits start within three bills. That is a conditional offer, not a general iPhone price or an automatic $1,200 reduction for every customer. AT&T’s September 2026 offer announcement sets out its conditions.

When buying from Apple is a better fit

  • You value the option to switch carriers and want an unlocked phone from the start.
  • Your current service plan is inexpensive, and a carrier discount would require a plan that costs more over time.
  • You prefer to pay in full or use Apple financing rather than tie the phone to a carrier installment plan.
  • You want to compare Apple’s own trade-in value and any carrier promotion Apple offers at checkout.

Buying from Apple does not mean forgoing every carrier promotion. Check Apple’s checkout with the same carrier, plan, trade-in, and device configuration you would use on the carrier’s site.

Apple iPhone 13, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
  • There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.
  • This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.
  • Product may come in generic Box.

When carrier financing may make sense

  • You already want the qualifying carrier plan and would keep it for the full promotional-credit period.
  • Your trade-in device and account meet the offer conditions.
  • The total service cost is competitive against your existing plan, even after including the full credit term.
  • You are comfortable with the carrier’s lock and payoff rules while the phone is being financed.

Before accepting an offer, verify its eligibility in writing or at checkout. In particular, confirm whether credits continue after an early payoff, plan change, or cancellation, and whether a new line is required.

Apple Upgrade is a lease, not an installment purchase

Apple Upgrade is a consumer lease with separate return, extension, early-termination, and end-of-term purchase conditions. Do not compare its monthly payment directly with a purchase loan without accounting for the lease’s end-of-term choices. Apple’s July 2026 launch announcement cited typical payments of $31.99 per month for 24 months or $45.99 per month for 12 months for an iPhone 17 Pro 256GB with a stated $1,099 purchase price, excluding tax and trade-in. Those figures were an example from that announcement, not a current quote for every model or a purchase-loan offer. Review Apple’s Apple Upgrade announcement and the applicable lease terms before enrolling.

Use this decision rule

Choose the option with the lower full cost for the phone and service you actually want, after accounting for credits and their conditions. If switching carriers matters, Apple’s full-price and Apple-financed unlocked options offer more flexibility. If you already want the carrier’s qualifying plan and will remain eligible for the full credit term, carrier financing may be worth considering. There is no universal cheapest route: the result depends on your carrier, plan price, trade-in, eligibility, and time horizon.
