Wait if you cannot find credible performance testing on hardware and settings close to yours, or if early reports show stutter or instability you would not accept. A benchmark is evidence about the tested PC, game build, and settings—not a promise about every computer. If the evidence is relevant and the experience looks acceptable to you, buying now can make sense; if not, waiting for more testing or patches is the safer choice.
What to check before deciding
Start with your own setup and preferences: GPU, CPU, memory, display resolution, and the graphics settings you are willing to use. Then look for a performance review that tests a similar configuration. A result from a high-end system at 4K ultra cannot establish how the game will run on a midrange PC at 1080p. Likewise, a low-settings test may not reflect the visual quality you want.

Read the test conditions
- Hardware: Check the exact GPU and CPU, and whether the test used desktop or laptop components.
- Image quality: Note resolution, preset, ray tracing, and any other demanding settings.
- Rendering features: Look for upscaling such as DLSS, FSR, or XeSS, including the selected quality mode, and whether frame generation was enabled.
- Test method: A repeatable gameplay route may be more representative than a built-in benchmark or a short subjective impression. PC Gamer’s gaming performance analysis guide discusses testing multiple GPUs and whether a built-in test reflects actual gameplay.
- Build details: Check the patch or build date and any driver information the reviewer reports. Older results may not describe the current version.
If key details are missing, treat the result as less directly applicable to your PC rather than assuming it predicts your experience.
Look beyond average FPS
Average frames per second (FPS) summarizes a test run, but it can hide occasional long frames that feel like stutter. Valve’s Steam in-game performance monitor documentation explains that a solid average may not reflect visible micro-stutter or input latency. NVIDIA’s FrameView 1.7 guide defines 1% low FPS as a consistency measure: the closer it is to the average, the more consistent the experience is likely to be.

Prefer reviews that report average FPS alongside 1% lows or frame-time evidence and describe what happened in real gameplay. Look for notes about traversal or shader-compilation stutter, crashes, and major drops in demanding scenes. No single 1% low is a universal pass/fail threshold; what feels acceptable depends on the game, genre, display, and your own tolerance.
Separate base FPS from generated FPS
Frame generation can increase the number of displayed frames without raising the game’s underlying rendered frame rate to the same level. Steam’s performance monitor can show frame-generation FPS separately from base game FPS. If a review gives only a generated total, do not compare it as though it were equivalent to the base rate; look for base FPS and latency context where available. The distinction is especially useful when comparing tests that use different rendering features.
Weigh the evidence when reviews disagree
Compare results using the conditions that determine whether they apply to you. A discrepancy may reflect different hardware, settings, game builds, or test scenes rather than a simple contradiction.

- Hardware: Compare GPU and CPU, including desktop versus laptop systems.
- Settings: Match resolution, visual preset, ray tracing, and any scaling.
- Rendering: Check the upscaler and mode, frame-generation status, and whether reported FPS is base or generated.
- Consistency: Compare averages with 1% lows or frame-time behavior, as well as reports of stutter.
- Test quality: Distinguish representative gameplay from a built-in benchmark or a brief scene.
- Reproducibility: Give more weight to several independent reviewers with disclosed methods who reach similar conclusions on comparable hardware. Consider build dates and repeat runs when reported.
User reviews can add useful firsthand reports, but hardware and settings differ. Look for specific system details before applying an anecdote to your own PC, and be cautious about a striking result when the method, scene, or build is unclear.

Choose whether to buy, wait, or skip
Buy now when the evidence fits
Buying now is reasonable when recent testing uses hardware and settings close to yours, the tested visual compromises are acceptable, and low-percentile results and gameplay reports do not reveal stutter or instability you would reject. Playing immediately may be worth some remaining uncertainty.
Wait when key questions remain
Wait if reliable tests are not available, reviewers describe serious instability, or the available benchmarks use much stronger hardware or substantially different settings. Waiting is also sensible just after launch, when further reports and patches may clarify whether a problem is widespread or limited to particular configurations. Recheck reviews after updates rather than assuming an earlier result still describes the current build.

Skip or delay if the trade-offs do not work
If current results suggest you would need settings reductions you dislike to get an acceptable experience, or important issues remain unresolved and you have little reason to play immediately, delaying or skipping is a reasonable choice. Without details about the game, your system, budget, and acceptable settings, there is no sound basis for recommending a PC upgrade.

Steam’s refund policy generally allows a request within 14 days of purchase if you have played for less than two hours. Valve says it may consider requests outside those conditions, but an exception is not guaranteed. These terms are specific to Steam; other PC storefronts have their own policies, and regional rights may affect a transaction. Check the live terms for your purchase.

A refund window is a limited fallback, not a performance guarantee or a free trial. Two hours may not reveal problems that appear later in a game, and a request outside Steam’s usual conditions may not be accepted.
For Early Access games, Steam describes the title as a work in progress and advises buyers to understand what they are purchasing and buy only if they are excited to play it in its current state. Steam says its refund policy still applies. Judge the build available now, not assumed future optimization; the game’s performance may change as development continues.
