Choose a Mac mini if its memory and connectivity fit your work and you want a lower-cost, compact desktop; choose a Mac Studio if you need a higher memory ceiling, professional-workload capacity, or its published display and Thunderbolt 5 capabilities. The current lineup, announced by Apple on September 22, 2026, ranges from an $899 U.S. Mac mini to a $5,499 U.S. Mac Studio. The right choice depends less on the product names than on your apps, project size, memory needs, displays, storage, and total setup budget.

What are the current Mac mini and Mac Studio options?

Apple announced four configurations on September 22, 2026. These are Apple’s U.S. starting prices, not retailer quotes; check current availability and local pricing before buying.

Model U.S. starting price Published configuration highlights
Mac mini with M6 $899 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU; starts with 16GB unified memory and configurable to 32GB.
Mac mini with M5 Pro $1,699 Up to 18-core CPU and 20-core GPU; up to 64GB unified memory and 307GB/s memory bandwidth.
Mac Studio with M5 Max $2,499 18-core CPU, up to 40-core GPU, and up to 128GB unified memory.
Mac Studio with M5 Ultra $5,499 Up to 36-core CPU, up to 80-core GPU, and up to 512GB unified memory with 1.2TB/s memory bandwidth.

Apple said the 512GB Mac Studio configuration was expected in late October 2026. That is an announced expectation, not a guarantee of current stock or delivery; verify availability when you order. Model details and pricing are from Apple’s September 22, 2026 announcement.

When should you buy a Mac mini?

Choose the M6 mini for everyday work and a lower starting price

The M6 Mac mini starts at $899 in the U.S. and has 16GB unified memory in its base configuration, configurable to 32GB. It is the straightforward choice when that memory range and the model’s exact display and port support meet your needs. Apple positions the mini for everyday users, students, developers, creative enthusiasts, and businesses, but those labels are not a substitute for checking the demands of your own applications.

  • SUPERCHARGED BY M4 — The powerful M4 chip delivers spectacular performance so everything feels snappy and fluid.

Apple says the M6 mini has up to 40 percent faster CPU performance than a specified prior-generation M4 Mac mini configuration. This is Apple’s comparison, not an independent test, and should not be read as a promise that every task will be 40 percent faster.

Consider the M5 Pro mini for a more demanding workload that still fits its ceiling

The $1,699 U.S.-starting M5 Pro mini raises the available memory ceiling to 64GB and offers up to an 18-core CPU, 20-core GPU, and 307GB/s memory bandwidth. It is a middle option for buyers whose work needs more than the M6 mini’s maximum memory but does not require a Studio’s published memory ceiling or other capabilities.

When is a Mac Studio worth considering?

Pick Studio when memory capacity is a firm requirement

The M5 Max Mac Studio supports up to 128GB unified memory; the M5 Ultra model supports up to 512GB. If your software, project files, or local AI workload genuinely needs more memory than the chosen mini can be configured with, that is a concrete reason to look at Studio. Memory capacity alone does not establish that a Studio will be faster for every application, so match the configuration to the workload rather than buying the largest number available.

Choose based on professional workload and expansion needs

Apple positions Mac Studio for professional work such as 3D, motion graphics, video, and on-device AI. It also states that the M5 Max and M5 Ultra Studio support up to eight displays, or up to four Studio Display XDR at full 5K resolution and 120Hz. Apple lists Thunderbolt 5 on both Studio models, with transfers up to 120Gb/s, and names external storage, PCIe expansion chassis, and hubs as relevant use cases.

Those capabilities can matter if your setup depends on many displays or expansion hardware. Apple’s September 2026 announcement does not provide equivalent Mac mini display and port details for a direct comparison. Check the technical specifications for the exact mini configuration before deciding it will support your monitors or accessories.

How should you compare the price and the whole setup?

The starting-price gap is substantial: the M6 mini begins at $899, while the M5 Max Studio begins at $2,499 and the M5 Ultra Studio at $5,499 in the U.S., according to Apple’s September 2026 announcement. The M5 Pro mini starts at $1,699. These are entry prices for the named configurations; upgrades and local prices can change what you actually pay.

Compare the computer plus what you still need to use it. A buyer who already owns a suitable display, keyboard, storage, and other peripherals may have a very different total cost from someone building a complete workstation. For large project files, account for external storage if needed; for a desktop without an existing monitor, include a display in the budget. Apple identifies storage and displays as relevant setup categories but does not endorse a particular third-party accessory.

A practical decision checklist

  • List the apps and projects you actually use. Note project size, workload duration, and any known memory requirements rather than relying only on broad labels such as “creative” or “professional.”
  • Set a memory ceiling. The published maxima are 32GB for M6 mini, 64GB for M5 Pro mini, 128GB for M5 Max Studio, and 512GB for M5 Ultra Studio. Choose Studio if a required workload exceeds the mini configuration that otherwise fits your budget.
  • Count displays and expansion devices. Studio’s published multi-display support and Thunderbolt 5 may fit complex setups; confirm the specific mini’s technical specification for a like-for-like check.
  • Price the complete setup. Add any display, external storage, and other peripherals you need to the computer’s configured price.
  • Check the exact configuration’s availability. In particular, Apple’s announced late-October 2026 expectation for the 512GB Studio configuration may differ from actual availability at purchase time.

How to interpret Apple’s performance claims

Apple’s announcement reports up to 40 percent faster CPU performance for the M6 mini than a specified prior-generation M4 mini configuration, and up to 4.3 times faster AI performance for M5 Ultra Studio than Apple’s stated prior-generation comparison. These are manufacturer comparisons, not independent head-to-head tests of the 2026 mini and Studio. They do not show how every app or task will perform, so do not use them alone to decide whether the Studio premium is worthwhile.
