Yes—if you need a desktop now, Apple’s M6 and M5 Pro Mac mini models are available. For most everyday, study, office, and moderate creative work, the M6 is the more sensible starting point. Choose M5 Pro when your actual workload can use its higher compute ceiling, support for up to 64GB of unified memory, or Thunderbolt 5. In the U.S., the starting prices differ by $800, so the Pro premium needs a specific reason.
Are the M6 and M5 Pro Mac mini available now?
Yes. Apple said the models would be available beginning September 22, 2026, through Apple Stores and authorized resellers. The prices below are Apple’s announced U.S. starting prices, not a check of current retailer offers. Apple’s availability announcement lists the launch timing and prices.
- M6 Mac mini: starts at $899 in the U.S.; eligible education pricing starts at $799.
- M5 Pro Mac mini: starts at $1,699 in the U.S.; eligible education pricing starts at $1,599.
That is an $800 difference between the standard starting prices. Compare complete configurations and current prices in your region before buying; the base price alone does not tell you whether a particular memory and storage combination is right for you.
M6 vs. M5 Pro: what changes?
| Decision factor | M6 Mac mini | M5 Pro Mac mini |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. starting price | $899 | $1,699 |
| Maximum unified memory listed by Apple | Up to 32GB | Up to 64GB |

Apple’s August 25, 2026 Mac mini announcement lists the chip, memory, and bandwidth specifications. Apple says M6 has up to 170GB/s memory bandwidth and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine; M5 Pro supports up to 307GB/s memory bandwidth. These specifications describe the products, but they are not independent benchmarks or a direct M6-versus-M5 Pro test.

Both models include HDMI, Ethernet, two front USB-C ports, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 6. Apple lists 2.5Gb Ethernet with a 10Gb option. The Thunderbolt generation differs: M6 has three Thunderbolt 4 ports, while M5 Pro has three Thunderbolt 5 ports. Check that your monitors, storage, docks, and other peripherals work with the configuration you choose. Apple’s specifications announcement describes these connections.
Who should buy the M6 Mac mini?
The M6 is the default choice if your work fits comfortably within its configuration and you do not have a clear need for M5 Pro’s additional capacity. It is a strong fit for everyday computer use, school, office work, browsing, software development without unusually demanding workloads, and moderate creative projects.

Apple describes the M6 as suited to productivity, student and developer use, creative work, and on-device AI. Treat that as Apple’s positioning, not a guarantee that every app or project will run at a particular speed. The practical question is whether your applications and project sizes need more compute or memory than the M6 offers.
When is M5 Pro worth the extra $800?
Consider M5 Pro when you can name a sustained workload that benefits from more CPU or GPU capacity, a memory configuration above the M6’s 32GB ceiling, or Thunderbolt 5. Examples include demanding video production, rendering, game development, scientific simulations, complex 3D work, and larger local AI models—the kinds of workloads Apple associates with the Pro tier.

- More memory headroom: Apple offers M5 Pro configurations up to 64GB unified memory. That can matter when projects, datasets, or local models put a real demand on memory.
- More compute capacity: M5 Pro is configurable with up to an 18-core CPU and 20-core GPU, compared with the M6’s 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU configuration.
- Newer high-speed connection: M5 Pro’s Thunderbolt 5 ports may be useful if your devices and workflow can take advantage of that interface.
Apple reports that M6 is up to 40 percent faster in CPU performance, up to 2x faster in graphics, and up to 4x faster in AI performance than specified previous-generation Mac mini systems. Those are Apple’s claims, not independent results; the stated baseline is a previous-generation M4 Mac mini with a 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 32GB unified memory, and 2TB SSD. They do not establish how M6 compares with M5 Pro. Apple also publishes application-specific M5 Pro claims for tasks such as LLM prompt processing, Blender rendering, and Affinity image processing. These vendor comparisons should not be treated as a neutral, direct head-to-head benchmark. Apple’s announcement provides the claims and comparison details.
Choose memory and storage for your actual setup
Apple’s U.S. purchase page lists M6 memory options of 16GB or 24GB and storage choices including 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB; it also shows a 32GB/1TB configuration. M5 Pro examples include 24GB/512GB and 64GB/1TB. Available combinations can differ by market and may change, so check the live configurator for the region where you are purchasing. - List the applications and projects you expect to run. Include the largest or most demanding work you regularly do, not only light tasks.
- Estimate memory needs. If your work has a demonstrated need for more than 32GB of unified memory, M5 Pro is the fit among these two models.
- Estimate internal storage. Account for project files, media, applications, and the space you want available locally.
- Check connected devices and displays. Confirm the ports and compatibility you need, especially if Thunderbolt 5 is part of the reason you are considering M5 Pro.
- Compare the full regional configuration price. The starting-price gap is not necessarily the difference between the specific configurations you will buy.
Because the listed memory and storage are configuration choices, select a configuration that meets your needs when ordering rather than assuming you can simply expand those components later.

- Buy M6 for everyday use, study, office work, browsing, ordinary development, or moderate creative projects when its available memory and storage configurations meet your needs.
- Buy M5 Pro if you have demanding, sustained work that benefits from its higher CPU/GPU ceiling, up to 64GB memory, or Thunderbolt 5—and that benefit justifies the higher complete-configuration price.
Apple hardware chief Johny Srouji called Mac mini “our most versatile Mac” in the company’s August 25 announcement. That is Apple’s executive’s characterization; the decision for an individual buyer still comes down to workload, configuration, connections, and price.
