If you want a complete deck with the least setup, buy a preconstructed Commander deck. If you have a particular commander, card list, or customization goal, buy singles. Neither option is automatically cheaper: compare the current sealed price with the delivered cost of the same decklist as singles, accounting for shipping, taxes, card condition, and what comes in the box.
What you get with a preconstructed Commander deck
A precon is a ready-to-play 100-card Commander deck. Its exact extras depend on the release, so check the official product page rather than assuming every box contains the same materials.
For example, Wizards of the Coast’s Foundations Commander decklists, published September 18, 2026, describe five beginner-oriented decks released October 2, 2026. Each includes a 100-card deck—one traditional foil borderless face commander and 99 nonfoil cards—plus ten double-sided tokens, a reference card, and a deck box. Wizards publishes the decklists, letting you inspect the cards before buying. The page names local game stores, TCGplayer, Amazon, and other Magic retailers as places to find the products; it does not establish current prices or stock.
Other releases show why contents should be checked individually. The 2022 Starter Commander Decks included ten double-sided tokens, a deck box, punchout counters, a strategy insert, a Commander rules summary, and a reference card. Wizards’ FINAL FANTASY Commander page describes four ready-to-play 100-card decks with two foil commanders, 98 nonfoil cards, ten double-sided tokens, a Collector Booster Sample Pack, a reference card, and deck box; the worldwide release was June 13, 2025. Its Bloomburrow collecting page describes four ready-to-play 100-card decks, each with three traditional foil cards, a Collector Booster Sample Pack, ten double-sided tokens, a deck box, and a strategy insert.

When buying a precon makes more sense
- You want to play promptly. The deck is already assembled, so you avoid choosing and sourcing a full list card by card.
- You want a starting point for learning. A complete deck lets you learn its strategy in play, and Wizards describes the Foundations decks as using straightforward strategies such as artifacts, large creatures, or Dragons.
- You need a dependable starting deck for a group. A sealed, ready-to-play product gives everyone a known starting point without requiring someone to build a list first.
- You like the theme and most of the cards. Use the official decklist to see whether the product is close enough to what you want to play.
When buying singles makes more sense
- You already have a specific commander or list in mind. Singles give you control over the cards rather than asking you to adapt to a prebuilt strategy.
- You own some of the cards already. You can buy only what the list is missing instead of paying for a complete sealed deck.
- You want to customize substantially. Buying the exact cards for your intended theme or strategy avoids acquiring a precon whose contents you do not plan to use.
Wizards’ Foundations page publishes decklists and points readers to a buyer’s guide for modifying a deck or building a new one. A published list can therefore help whether you buy the precon unchanged, use it as a base, or assemble your own version.
How to compare the real cost
There is no reliable universal price winner between precons and singles. Marketplace listings change, and the available evidence does not establish a matched comparison of a sealed deck against all the same cards bought individually. Compare one specific deck in one market instead:

- Find the current sealed price. Check the exact product and seller; a retailer’s listing or a product page does not guarantee current stock or a particular price.
- Price the exact list as singles. Use the same 100-card list, not a substitute list or a selection of only its most valuable cards.
- Compare delivered totals. Include shipping and taxes where relevant, and use consistent assumptions about card condition, language, and edition.
- Account for the box contents you value. Tokens, a deck box, sample packs, or beginner materials may matter to you, but they are product-specific rather than guaranteed features of every precon.
For a useful comparison, note the date, market, seller, and condition assumptions. A single seller’s price or one deck’s result does not prove that precons or singles are generally cheaper.

Yes. If a precon has the theme or core strategy you want, use its published list to decide which cards to keep and which to replace, then buy only the additions you choose. This combines the ready-made starting point with control over the final list. Whether it costs less than buying the finished list outright depends on current prices and the cards you retain, so compare the totals before choosing.
