Usually, yes—if the course or instructor requires disclosure, and whenever the rules are unclear, ask before using AI. There is no single policy for every college, course, or assignment. Check the syllabus and prompt first; then follow the instructor’s rules for both permitted use and disclosure.
What should you do before using AI for coursework?
- Read the current syllabus and assignment prompt. Check whether they address the specific tool and task—for example, brainstorming, outlining, drafting, editing, proofreading, or citation formatting. Rules can differ between courses and assignments. Columbia Business School and Vanderbilt University both explain that expectations depend on course or instructor guidance.
- If AI use is prohibited, do not use it unless the instructor clarifies or changes the rule. If it is allowed, stay within the permitted boundary and follow any disclosure instructions. Dartmouth College likewise directs students to course-level expectations.
- If the policy is missing or ambiguous, ask before using AI. Columbia Business School advises students to clarify with the professor before use and encourages asking by email. Vanderbilt and Dartmouth also direct students to ask their instructors.
- Keep a record of substantial assistance. Note the tool, what you asked it to do, and how you used or changed its output. Vanderbilt recommends detailed notes, and Cornell’s Center for Teaching Innovation advises students to verify citations and information.
Does allowed AI use still need to be disclosed?
It can. Permission to use AI does not automatically waive a course’s disclosure requirement. Princeton’s official student guidance says that failing to disclose AI use can violate scholarly-integrity rules even in a course where AI is permitted. Its guidance states: “All the tenets of scholarly integrity apply to use of generative AI: students must not pass off any output by generative AI as their own, and so a failure of disclosure, even in a course where AI is permitted, is a scholarly integrity violation.” Read the Princeton guidance and apply your own instructor’s directions.
Policies differ, so examples from individual institutions should not be treated as a universal college rule. Columbia Business School gives general guidance to disclose AI use and how it was used; Vanderbilt says students should clearly disclose use when instructor guidance is absent; Dartmouth says the course instructor defines expectations and students should ask how to acknowledge AI assistance. Tufts frames disclosure as part of academic trust: “Disclosure of when and how one is engaging with AI is a requirement for trust and integrity within the academic community.” See Tufts’ guidelines.
A specific, current example is Columbia Law School’s default academic policy for 2026–27, effective August 1, 2026. It requires disclosure of any AI use that contributes to a written submission or other work product, and directs students to consult instructors when uncertain. This is a law-school policy, not a rule for all colleges. Read the Columbia Law School policy.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What should an AI disclosure say?
Use the format required by your instructor or assignment. A clear disclosure normally names the tool and describes its contribution—for instance, brainstorming, outlining, generating text, revising, proofreading, or formatting citations. Some courses may ask for a citation, an acknowledgement, a use log, or a specific style guide; do not assume one format works everywhere.
Princeton offers this sample wording, which is an example rather than a universal citation style:

Princeton notes that practices differ by discipline, while Vanderbilt advises students to follow assignment-specific and instructor-specific requirements, including any requested style guide. If the instructions do not say whether to cite, acknowledge, or attach a record, ask.

Why can editing and generating content be treated differently?
A tool that helps polish text you wrote may cross into generating content for you, and an assignment may draw a different boundary than you expect. Rebekah Fitzsimmons, chair of the AI faculty advising committee at Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz College, told the Associated Press: “Often, students don’t realize when they’re crossing a line between a tool that is helping them fix content that they’ve created and when it is generating content for them.” The practical safeguard is to check the task-specific rule and describe the tool’s actual role honestly. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What are the consequences of not following the rule?
Unauthorized AI use or failure to disclose when required may lead to an academic-integrity process, but rules and consequences are institution-specific. Columbia Business School treats unauthorized use as an Honor Code violation; Princeton lists failure to disclose among practices that can violate scholarly integrity; Dartmouth says failure to acknowledge or cite use may result in disciplinary action. These examples do not establish identical penalties across colleges. Check the policy that applies to your course and institution.
