Its speed should respond to heat and workload, though exact behavior varies by computer and component. Investigate persistent loud fan noise at idle, unusual mechanical sounds, overheating symptoms, or a failed hardware test rather than relying on one temperature threshold for every model.
Why computer fans run
A fan pushes air across or through a heatsink so heat can escape. As CPU or GPU activity raises temperatures, a system’s fan controller may increase fan speed. Intel describes the thermal-management goal as keeping the processor at or below its maximum operating temperature in Troubleshooting Fan Issues with Intel® Boxed Processors. The exact speed curve and temperature limits depend on the computer’s design, firmware, and cooling profile.
Some computers keep fans turning slowly even at light load; others stop a particular fan until more cooling is needed. For example, MSI says some laptops with discrete graphics start the dGPU fan only after a default temperature threshold is reached. A stationary GPU fan is not necessarily faulty: check the temperature and guidance for the exact model in MSI’s fan troubleshooting guidance.
When continuous fan operation is normal
Gaming, video editing, rendering, file conversion, updates, and multiple active applications can keep components warm enough that a fan runs throughout the task. Dell notes that a fan running constantly during a heavy workload can be normal if the computer does not shut down and the fan passes diagnostics. Warmth during sustained work alone does not prove a fault. See Dell’s overheating and shutdown guidance.

- Streamlined redux edition: proven Noctua quality at an attractive price point, wide range of optional accessories (anti-vibration mounts, S-ATA adaptors, y-splitters, extension cables, etc.)
Room temperature and restricted airflow can also make fans run faster or louder. Place the computer on a hard, clear surface, uncover its vents, and keep bedding, paper, and other objects away from air intakes and exhausts. Dust, hair, or debris can obstruct vents, fan blades, or cooling fins; follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions for your model.
When a loud or constant fan needs investigation
Check further if a fan stays very fast or loud while the computer is cool and idle, the computer becomes unusually hot, performance drops, or the system repeatedly crashes, reboots, fails to start, or shuts down. Grinding, knocking, or ticking can indicate a mechanical problem. Intel lists these kinds of symptoms among possible fan-failure signs in its fan troubleshooting article and its overheating symptoms and troubleshooting guidance.

- HIGH STATIC PRESSURE: Efficient even with resistance – the generated airflow easily penetrates dense radiators, narrow perforated panels and mesh structures and ensures reliable cooling
- PWM CONTROL WITH WIDE SPEED RANGE: The speed can be progressively adjusted up to 3000 rpm via the 4-pin PWM connection – the fan stops completely at less than 5% PWM
- PRECISE MANUFACTURING FOR MAXIMUM SMOOTH RUNNING: Minimal gaps, automatic balancing and high-precision measurement noticeably reduce vibrations – for quiet, efficient and long-lasting performance
- SMOOTH-RUNNING FLUID DYNAMIC BEARING (FDB): The self-lubricating bearing minimizes noise during operation – ideal for quiet, efficient cooling and a long, reliable service life
- NEW FAN BLADE DESIGN FOR MORE PERFORMANCE: The redesigned rotor blades offer an optimal balance of performance and low noise – especially efficient at low speeds
These symptoms are clues, not proof that a fan itself has failed. High workload, blocked airflow, software activity, outdated system components, or hardware trouble can all affect cooling. A fan that does not operate when the system needs it also deserves attention.
How to troubleshoot a computer fan that runs constantly
- Check the workload. Inspect active applications and background activity for unusually heavy CPU or GPU use, then see whether the fan slows when that work ends. High component load naturally increases cooling demand.
- Restore airflow. Move the computer to a hard, clear surface and uncover its vents. Look for visible dust or debris, and clean only as the maker instructs for that specific model. Intel advises checking fans, especially the processor heatsink fan, for dust.
- Run the computer maker’s diagnostics. Use the built-in fan or hardware test if available. Dell’s guidance describes preboot diagnostics; if a test still fails after its recommended steps, contact Dell support or the maker of your computer.
- Check software and firmware with care. Follow model-specific support guidance for updates or comparison tests. Sony suggests checking whether the fan slows in BIOS or Safe Mode as a way to help distinguish a possible software cause; see Sony’s guidance for a fan running at high speed. Do not reset firmware settings or install a BIOS update casually: use the instructions for your exact model and account for settings you may need to preserve.
- Get service for persistent problems. If overheating continues, a diagnostic fails, or you suspect a failed fan or liquid-cooling pump, follow the system maker’s service guidance. Intel advises contacting the computer manufacturer about overheating on OEM systems; leaks or suspected pump failure should be handled according to the maker’s instructions.
Should you change the fan profile?
If your computer provides thermal profiles or an adjustable fan curve, use settings supported by its manufacturer. A quieter profile may allow higher temperatures; a more aggressive profile may increase noise. Compare profiles under the same workload by checking temperatures, audible noise, response to both CPU and GPU load, stability, and diagnostic results. The available controls and sensor choices vary by device, so there is no universal fan curve or fixed RPM target that is right for every computer. GIGABYTE’s Smart Fan 5 motherboard manual, for example, describes a Normal mode in which fan speed varies with temperature.

Why one temperature rule does not fit every computer
Computers use different processors, graphics hardware, cooling designs, fan controllers, and firmware profiles. Their normal fan behavior and temperature limits can therefore differ. Use the diagnostic guidance and operating limits published for your exact model rather than treating a single temperature or amount of runtime as a universal test. ASUS’s overheating and fan troubleshooting page (updated 2026-09-08) provides device-specific guidance; instructions may change, so consult the current support page for your model.
