Before buying on Amazon, check the seller, listing details, recent reviews, total price, and return terms—not just the star rating. Treat warning signs as reasons to investigate, not proof of fraud: Amazon’s seller policies prohibit counterfeit goods, but they do not mean Amazon has personally verified every individual listing.
How do I know if an Amazon seller is legit?
Start with the seller as well as the product. Amazon is a marketplace, and the seller, shipping arrangements, and return terms can differ between offers for the same item. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends checking seller feedback, contact information, shipping fees, return policies, photos, and the item description before buying. See the FTC’s marketplace buying guidance.

- Seller identity and feedback: Check the seller’s rating and read recent comments, especially comments about the specific kinds of problems you want to avoid.
- Shipping and total cost: Include shipping and any stated fees when comparing offers. Note the estimated delivery time.
- Returns: Read the return terms and check who pays return shipping. Do not assume every seller or item has identical terms.
- Listing details: Confirm the model, size, materials, condition, included accessories, and other specifications that matter to you. Compare the written description with the photos.
A high rating or familiar-looking seller name is not proof that a particular offer is safe. Likewise, one complaint is not enough to establish that a seller is fraudulent. Look for a consistent picture across the listing, seller feedback, and terms.
Are Amazon reviews real?
Use stars as a starting point, not a verdict. Reviews can help identify patterns, but the FTC says fake reviews may be positive or negative and that appearance alone does not always reveal whether a review is genuine. Its review-evaluation guidance recommends checking when reviews appeared, watching for a burst over a short period, and looking at reviewers’ other reviews.

- Amazon.com Gift Cards never expire and carry no fees.
- Multiple gift card designs and denominations to choose from.
- Redeemable towards millions of items store-wide at Amazon.com or certain affiliated websites.
- Available for immediate delivery. Gift cards sent by email can be scheduled up to a year in advance.
- No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.
- Read a range of recent reviews rather than relying on the average score or only the most visible comments.
- Check whether multiple reviews posted close together describe similar experiences in similar language. A burst is a reason to look more closely, not proof of manipulation.
- See whether reviewers have written other reviews and whether their histories appear relevant and varied.
- Compare review evidence with other sources where available, and check whether complaints concern the exact model or condition in the offer you are considering.
Amazon’s US review policy prohibits practices such as seller compensation for reviews, incentives in exchange for reviews, and requests for positive reviews or review changes tied to benefits. Be wary if a seller offers a refund or other benefit in exchange for a review or for changing one; Amazon’s policy text describes the prohibited practices. A suspicious review pattern alone, however, cannot establish who posted a review or why.
How do I avoid counterfeit or disappointing products on Amazon?
Investigate the complete offer rather than treating one clue as decisive. The FTC cautions that an expensive item offered at a very low price might be fake. A low price by itself does not prove counterfeiting; compare the seller, description, photos, condition, shipping, and total cost with other offers.

- Verify the item: Match the product name and model to the features, size, condition, and accessories stated in the listing.
- Inspect the photos and description: Look for details that conflict, are missing, or do not clearly show what is included. Do not assume a stock image proves the specific item’s authenticity or condition.
- Compare the full offer: Consider the total price, shipping estimate, seller feedback, and return terms alongside the product details.
- Keep your payment on Amazon: Do not agree to pay a seller outside the marketplace payment system. The FTC warns that off-platform payment can remove marketplace protections.
Amazon’s US anti-counterfeiting policy says products offered for sale must be authentic and counterfeit products are prohibited. That is a rule for sellers, not a guarantee that Amazon has personally authenticated each listing. Read the Amazon anti-counterfeiting policy for the platform’s rule.
What should I do if an Amazon order never arrives or is not as described?
First, check the order’s delivery information and the return or refund terms that apply to that offer. Save the listing, order confirmation, receipts, seller messages, delivery information, and the stated return terms. Contact the seller through Amazon and keep the conversation in the marketplace.

Some purchases from third-party sellers may qualify for Amazon’s A-to-z Guarantee for delivery or item-condition problems. It is not blanket coverage for every Amazon purchase: eligibility depends on the order, issue, procedure, and applicable deadlines, and some purchase types or scenarios are excluded. Certain claim scenarios require contacting the seller first and waiting; the policy also says some eligible requests must be made when the latest possible delivery date is 90 days or less. Check the current A-to-z Guarantee terms for your order and issue before relying on a particular deadline or remedy.
If the seller does not resolve the problem, use the marketplace’s applicable process and check any relevant payment-dispute options. The FTC also advises consumers to keep records, check return and refund deadlines, contact the marketplace when appropriate, and report dishonest businesses. Its guidance on marketplace purchases explains those steps.

A quick comparison before you buy
When comparing two offers for the same item, use the same checks for each. These factors are more useful together than any single rating or price:
| What to compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| Seller | Seller identity, rating, and recent feedback |
| Total cost | Item price plus shipping and stated fees |
| Item | Description, condition, photos, and what is included |
| Delivery | Estimated shipping and delivery timing |
| Returns | Return rules and who pays return shipping |
| Reviews | Recency, unusual bursts, reviewer histories, and evidence across sources |
There is no reliable shortcut in these checks that can prove a seller or listing is legitimate. Use the combined evidence to decide whether an offer is clear enough, fairly described, and acceptable under its terms.
