Former PlayStation executive Shawn Layden has questioned Sony’s reported plan to stop making game discs starting in 2028, arguing that physical games matter to collectors and can make a purchase feel more like ownership. He accepts that downloads are convenient, but says removing resale and physical copies could hurt the way buyers view PlayStation. The timing and plan have been reported by news outlets; they are not confirmed here by a Sony announcement.
What Layden said about PlayStation’s reported disc-production plan
In remarks on The Expansion Pass podcast reported by VGC on October 6, 2026, Layden said downloads are more convenient, while warning that eliminating physical games could carry a reputational cost. The report says Sony plans to stop producing game discs starting in 2028. That is a reported plan, not an official Sony statement established by the coverage cited here. VGC’s report identifies Layden as the former chairman of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios, a role he held when he left Sony in 2019.
Layden’s objection is not that every player prefers discs. He acknowledged the convenience of downloading games and suggested physical buyers could be a smaller share. His point was that the people who choose physical copies may be especially committed collectors—and that a minority preference can still matter to a brand.
Why physical games matter in Layden’s argument
Collectors value something they can keep and display
Layden described people as “an inquisitive collecting sort of people, and we like to show off our stuff.” A boxed game can be displayed and handled in a way a download cannot. His argument is about the appeal and meaning of collecting, not a claim that most PlayStation players buy games physically.

Resale changes how a purchase feels
Layden also connected physical ownership with the ability to sell a game. “If you can’t sell a thing, that means you don’t own a thing,” he said. He contrasted that feeling with buying access to a digital asset: “If you’re buying access, that doesn’t quite sound as sexy, to be honest.”
Those are Layden’s views about consumer perception. They do not settle the legal status of digital game licenses, nor do the reports establish that every digital purchase has identical terms. His concern is that taking resale out of the equation may make a purchase feel less like owning a game and more like receiving access to it.

Trust can be affected beyond the number of disc buyers
Layden’s reputational argument follows from those points: a decision can disappoint collectors and change how some buyers think about a platform even if downloads are more popular. He offered “maybe 80%” downloading and “20%” not downloading only as a rough illustration, adding “or whatever that breakdown is going to be.” Those figures are not a PlayStation sales statistic, and the report does not provide an independently sourced physical-versus-digital split.
What Layden said earlier about Sony’s possible reasoning
In an earlier Eurogamer interview published July 3, 2026, Layden said a disc-production decision would likely come down to financial calculations, while acknowledging he did not know Sony’s internal numbers. He also discussed broadband access as a condition he had considered during his time at PlayStation, including people who rely on physical games because they lack internet access. These comments are Layden’s judgments and recollections, not verification of Sony’s current reasoning or a measurement of internet access today. Layden said he no longer saw the second-hand market as a major business concern in his view. That view helps explain why he emphasizes the customer and brand consequences of losing physical games, rather than treating resale as decisive evidence against a digital shift.
Is PlayStation going all digital, and when could discs stop?
The available report describes a plan to stop making discs starting in 2028, but does not establish its full scope, possible exceptions, or how it would affect particular PlayStation products or regions. No primary Sony announcement is cited in the reporting described here. Treat “all digital” as a shorthand for the reported production change, not as confirmation that every physical PlayStation game will immediately disappear from sale.

Can you still buy physical PlayStation games?
The reported 2028 timing does not establish when retailers would stop selling existing stock, whether used copies would remain available, or whether every physical release would end. It also does not establish compatibility or availability for a specific PS5 model or disc drive. If you are deciding whether to buy a disc-based console or game, check the exact model and retailer listing rather than assuming the report answers those questions.
