Shader compilation transforms shader code into a form a graphics API or driver can use. Shader pre-caching is a strategy for doing some of that work before a game first needs it—or saving the results so they can be reused later. Compilation is the work; pre-caching changes when it happens and whether its outputs can be reused.

The distinction matters because a compiled shader is not necessarily a ready-to-use graphics pipeline. Depending on the engine and API, the eventual pipeline may also require exact shader combinations and rendering state. A cache can reduce repeated work, but it cannot guarantee that every state a game will need has already been prepared.

What shader compilation does

A shader is a program used by the graphics system for tasks such as processing vertices or determining the color of pixels. Compilation transforms shader source code or an intermediate representation into code or another representation that the graphics API and driver can use.

Compilation may happen at different points: while importing assets or building a game, when a program starts, or when a particular shader or graphics pipeline is requested. A game may also have multiple variants of a shader, created for different features or settings. Compiling one variant does not mean every possible variant has been compiled.

In Unity’s editor, for example, the editor checks Library/ShaderCache for an identical previously compiled variant. It reuses a match; if none exists, it compiles the variant and saves it. During a player build, required variants that have not yet been compiled are compiled into the game’s data. Unity’s shader variant documentation

What shader pre-caching does

Pre-caching, also called prewarming or precooking in some contexts, means preparing likely-needed graphics work before the moment it would otherwise be required. That can mean asking a driver to create a GPU representation of a shader variant before its first use, or creating and saving a larger object such as a complete pipeline state object (PSO) for later reuse.

Unity describes prewarming as asking the graphics driver to create GPU representations of shader variants before they are first needed, often during startup or a loading screen. Unity’s shader loading documentation A different system may use “pre-caching” to mean preserving compiled pipelines between runs or compiling likely pipelines ahead of time. The name alone does not identify exactly what is stored.

Modern graphics APIs can require more than shader code to create a usable pipeline. A PSO can package several shader stages together with rendering settings, such as vertex input layout and render state. As Epic explains, “Modern APIs require developers to package all the shaders and settings they will use for a draw request into a Pipeline State Object and set it as a single unit.” Epic’s PSO precaching article

How the terms differ

Term or approach What it does or stores When it helps Important limitation
Shader compilation Transforms shader code into an API- or driver-usable representation; it may produce a variant or contribute to pipeline creation. At import or build time, on demand, or during pipeline creation. A compiled shader does not necessarily mean that every complete pipeline state needed during play is ready. Unity; Vulkan Guide
Variant cache Reuses an already compiled matching shader variant. When the same variant is requested again and the cache entry is available. A changed or missing variant must be compiled; Unity notes that deleting its shader cache means variants are recompiled. Unity
Prewarming or precooking Requests GPU representations or prepares selected shader and rendering states before first use. Often during startup or a loading screen, to move work away from the first gameplay use. Incomplete or inaccurate state information can leave work unprepared. Unity
PSO cache or precaching Saves or precompiles pipeline state objects, which can include shaders and render state. During loading, in the background, or on a later run if the cache can be reused. Useful states must be gathered or predicted, and coverage or compatibility can vary. Unreal Engine; Vulkan Guide
Advanced Shader Delivery Prepares and distributes compiled shader results through a supported delivery pipeline. Before the game reaches a supported player’s device. Requires supported Windows, a capable GPU and driver, and storefront integration. Microsoft

Why a shader cache does not guarantee smooth gameplay

For DirectX 12, Metal, and Vulkan, Unity says accurate GPU representations require the exact vertex data layout and render state. Its documentation recommends rendering materials off-screen to provide those inputs. The ShaderVariantCollection.WarmUp and Shader.WarmupAllShaders APIs cannot supply that information, so they may create inaccurate representations. Unity’s shader loading documentation

Coverage is another constraint: a game cannot pre-create a state it does not know it will need. Epic says Unreal Engine’s PSO precaching can have coverage gaps, and outstanding work may still cause a hitch if gameplay needs it immediately. Pre-caching shifts work earlier or makes it reusable; it does not automatically eliminate all first-use work.

There is also a trade-off. Preparing more states can add work during startup or loading and may require storage for cached data. Background preparation can reduce the impact on an interactive screen, but it still has to finish before the game needs the relevant state.

How different engines and APIs handle it

Unity: variant reuse and GPU prewarming are separate

Unity’s shader cache reuses previously compiled variants in the editor. Its Caching Shader Preprocessor is a separate optimization: it caches intermediate preprocessing data and avoids re-parsing unchanged include files while importing and compiling multiple variants. That speeds part of the compilation process; it is not the same as prewarming a GPU representation.

Unity’s prewarming documentation instead concerns requesting GPU representations before first use, with the accuracy requirements described above. The distinction is practical: a faster or cached compilation step does not by itself mean that a complete, accurate pipeline is ready for gameplay.

Vulkan: pipeline cache data can persist between runs

The Vulkan Guide describes pipeline creation as potentially costly and notes that it can involve shader compilation. An application can use a VkPipelineCache to reuse pipeline creation work and save cache data to a file for reuse between runs. This is persistence and reuse; proactive creation of likely pipelines before the game requests them is a related timing strategy, not a requirement of the term “pipeline cache.” Vulkan Guide

Unreal Engine: shader compilation and PSO preparation

Unreal Engine supports asynchronous shader compilation and a Derived Data Cache for compiled shader results. Separately, FShaderPipelineCache supports logging, serializing, and precompiling PSOs. Its batch modes include faster batching suited to loading screens and background batching suited to interactive menus. Epic’s shader development documentation; FShaderPipelineCache API documentation

Epic describes Unreal Engine 5.2’s precaching as identifying potential PSOs as objects load, using material, mesh, and global settings, then compiling a subset during loading. Epic’s Fortnite Battle Royale example reports about 30,000 PSOs compiled for a match and about 10,000 used, from a possible combination space of millions. This is an Epic-reported example, not a general count for other games. Epic says the system eliminated PSO compilation stuttering for materials, while also noting that coverage gaps and outstanding work can remain. Epic’s PSO precaching article

Windows: Advanced Shader Delivery prepares results for supported players

Microsoft’s Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD) is a distribution approach, not simply another name for an engine’s local shader cache. Its documented pipeline creates a State Object Database (SODB), tests and compiles it into a Precompiled Shader Database (PSDB), then deploys the SODB to a storefront. Microsoft says ASD can reduce on-device compilation, load time, gameplay stutter, and compilation power use, but does not publish a universal reduction figure in the cited material. Support depends on the Windows version, GPU and driver capability, and storefront integration. Microsoft’s Advanced Shader Delivery overview

What to expect as a player or developer

  • If a game compiles shaders on first launch: it may be preparing variants or pipelines for the current system. Compilation can still occur later if gameplay requests states that were not covered.
  • If a loading screen takes longer: the game may be moving shader or PSO work earlier to reduce the chance of doing it during play. A longer load does not prove that every future state is prepared.
  • If a cache is deleted or invalidated: the engine may need to recreate entries. Whether it can reuse prior work depends on the cache, its inputs, and system compatibility.
  • If a developer is investigating a hitch: distinguish a missing compiled shader variant from a pipeline that has not yet been created with the required render state. Logging and precaching workflows can help identify useful PSOs, but completeness depends on observed or predicted states.

Cache contents and reuse can depend on the device, driver, engine, and version. The exact benefit therefore varies by implementation; the presence of a “shader cache” alone is not evidence that all relevant work is done.
