Session’s privacy depends on what you mean by “private.” The service says it does not require a phone number or email, encrypts messages end to end, and onion-routes them—but its current FAQ describes calls differently, Communities are not fully end-to-end encrypted, and disappearing messages cannot stop a recipient from saving a copy. This interview guide helps you explore those distinctions rather than treating privacy as a single yes-or-no promise.
Start with what “private” means to you
Before discussing Session’s features, identify what you want to protect. Keeping message text secret from network intermediaries is not the same as hiding your identity, concealing who you contact, or preventing someone with access to your device from reading a conversation.
- When you choose a messaging app, what do you want to keep private: message text, who you talk to, your phone number, your location, or something else?
- What made you try Session, or what would make you consider it?
- What would count as a privacy failure for you?
Does Session require a phone number or email?
Session says account creation does not require a phone number or email. Its account documentation describes identity as based on a generated Ed25519 key pair, rather than a phone number or email address. That can make an account pseudonymous; it does not ensure that the person behind it cannot be identified. A real name, profile image, shared Account ID, or activity outside the app could connect an account to its user. Session’s account documentation explains the key-based model.
- How did you create your Session account, and what information did you expect to provide?
- Would you use an alias, a real name, or a profile image? What might connect that profile back to you?
- How would you decide whether to share your Account ID, and with whom?
- If you needed to confirm someone’s identity, what other channel would feel safe and practical?
Can Session read messages, and what can routing reveal?
Session Support’s answer to “Can Session read my messages?” is: “No. All messages are end-to-end encrypted and onion-routed.” That is the service’s description of its system, not an independent guarantee against every way content might be exposed. End-to-end encryption is intended to protect message contents from intermediaries in transit; it does not by itself protect an unlocked or compromised device, or prevent a recipient from sharing what they received. Session Support’s explanation and the Session FAQ describe the messaging and routing claims.

Session says onion routing means no single server knows both a message’s origin and destination. That describes how the service says routing works; it should not be read as a promise that no network or activity information can ever be inferred. Session also says its clients are open source and reports an audit by Quarkslab. Those are relevant inputs when assessing trust, not proof that risk is absent. Session’s documentation overview provides its broader product and architecture material.
- What do you think an end-to-end encrypted app can still learn about your activity?
- Does routing through multiple nodes change your trust in a messaging service? Why?
- What would you want to see in an independent audit or transparency report before trusting a privacy claim?
What happens if someone gets your device or you lose access?
Encryption in transit does not settle what happens on an endpoint. Session’s FAQ describes local database encryption with a PIN or password on desktop; availability and setup may differ by platform, so check the current app documentation for the device you use rather than assuming the same protection everywhere.

Session says a mnemonic recovery seed can restore an Account ID on a new device. Recovery therefore depends on keeping that recovery material available and private: anyone who obtains it may be able to restore the account, while losing it can undermine your ability to recover access. Session’s FAQ describes recovery and local database encryption.
- What would concern you most if someone had physical access to your phone or computer?
- How do you currently protect important messaging apps on your device?
- Would you be comfortable keeping a recovery phrase or seed? Where would you store it?
- What would you expect to lose if you could not recover your account?
Are Session calls, groups, and Communities equally private?
No. Session’s FAQ distinguishes among messaging features. Small group chats are described as end-to-end encrypted, while Communities are public, self-hosted spaces that are not fully end-to-end encrypted. Do not treat a Community as equivalent to a private chat or group.

Calls have a separate trade-off. The current FAQ describes calls as peer-to-peer and says a user’s IP address is exposed to the call partner and an STF-operated STUN/TURN server. It says onion-routed calls are on the way; that is a stated future capability, not the current call arrangement described in the FAQ. Because calling features can change, check Session’s current FAQ before relying on this distinction.
- Would you use voice or video calls if the call partner could see your IP address?
- Do you distinguish a private group chat from a public community space?
- What types of conversations would you avoid in a public channel?
Do disappearing messages permanently delete content?
Session describes its disappearing-message timer, or TTL, as removing a message from both devices and the swarm after the chosen interval. This is deletion within the app and network path Session describes, not a guarantee that no copy remains. A recipient may copy, photograph, capture, or otherwise preserve content outside that deletion path. Session’s FAQ describes the TTL behavior.

How should you judge Session’s privacy claims?
Evaluate each feature and threat separately instead of asking whether Session is simply “private.” Its account design, message encryption, routing, calls, groups, Communities, recovery, and deletion behavior do not all offer the same protections. Session’s published roadmap also distinguishes planned work from current functionality: its Protocol V2 documentation lists post-quantum cryptography, re-implemented perfect forward secrecy, and multi-device management as work in development, not features to assume are already delivered. See the Session Protocol documentation and Session Docs overview for those plans.
A useful interview ends with specific decisions: what you will put in a profile, whom you will share an Account ID with, how you will protect recovery material, whether you will use calls, and which conversations belong in a public Community rather than an encrypted chat.
