For lightweight parallelism, Playwright browser contexts usually provide the simplest isolation. When you need remote machines, multiple browser versions, or many platforms, Selenium Grid adds a queue, capability matching, slots, and session-aware routing. Neither model removes the need to isolate shared application data or to measure real workload capacity.
What a browser session contains
A session is more than a browser window. It carries cookies, local and session storage, authentication state, cache, permissions, downloads, and any data your application places in the browser profile. If two independent tests reuse that state, one can silently authenticate as the other, consume the other’s cart, or alter its feature flags.
Define the isolation boundary before choosing infrastructure:
- Browser process: the OS process and its resource footprint.
- Browser context: an isolated cookie and storage container inside a browser process.
- WebDriver session: the remotely addressable browser instance created with requested capabilities.
- Application data: accounts, records, queues, and APIs outside the browser that still require isolation or coordination.
Playwright describes a BrowserContext as a clean-slate environment with its own cookies and storage. Contexts can share one browser process while remaining separate from one another, and one scenario can create multiple contexts to represent different users.

There is no published universal concurrency threshold where one model becomes correct. Benchmark your actual browser mix, pages, authentication flow, and test duration. A context pool is usually the first step when one host can meet coverage and capacity. Use Grid when remote execution, heterogeneous platforms, or independent failure domains justify its operational cost.
Design an explicit session manager
Keep ownership as data rather than relying on implicit worker behavior. A useful record contains:
- Session ID and requested capabilities (browser, version, platform, viewport).
- Assigned worker or Grid Node and slot.
- Lifecycle state: requested, queued, starting, active, draining, failed, or closed.
- Creation, last-command, and termination timestamps.
- Test or job ID, tenant, and cleanup policy.
Context-pool pattern
- Start one browser per worker process.
- Create a new context for each independent test or job.
- Load only the required authenticated state into that context.
- Close the context in a finally/teardown path, even after a failure.
- Close the browser when the worker exits or is recycled.
Playwright Test runs work in worker processes, with each worker starting a browser. Context isolation does not isolate your backend. The parallelism guidance recommends unique backend data or worker identities for accounts and records. Use generated IDs, tenant-scoped fixtures, or explicit locks for shared resources.

Grid session flow
- A client sends a new-session request with capabilities.
- The Router places it in the New Session Queue.
- The Distributor finds a matching free slot on a Node.
- The session is created on that Node.
- The Session Map stores the session-ID-to-Node association.
- Subsequent commands go through the Router to the owning Node.
This routing state is essential: a later command cannot safely be sent to an arbitrary Node. Treat a lost session-map entry, Node failure, or expired session as a distinct error and retry only when your test semantics make retrying safe.
Prevent collisions outside the browser
Parallel workers can still race in shared systems. Two tests that use different contexts but update the same customer, consume the same queue message, or call a rate-limited external API are not isolated.
- Give each test a unique account, record prefix, and email address.
- Partition fixtures by worker identity or tenant.
- Use database transactions, row locks, or a test-only namespace where appropriate.
- Serialize destructive operations and external side effects that cannot be safely duplicated.
- Make cleanup idempotent and run it by resource owner, not by whichever worker finishes first.
Estimate capacity without guessing
Selenium’s getting-started documentation uses one CPU and approximately 1 GB of RAM per browser session as a starting reference. It explicitly says defaults may not fit your environment and recommends continuous performance measurement; this is not a guaranteed capacity or benchmark. Safari is called out as an exception to the default CPU-based Node concurrency guidance. See Selenium’s Grid sizing guidance.

A staged measurement plan
- Record the real browser/version/platform mix and representative pages.
- Run one session and capture startup time, peak CPU, peak memory, duration, and failure rate.
- Increase concurrency in small steps while recording queue and session-creation latency.
- Repeat with cold caches, authenticated flows, downloads, media, and your heaviest pages.
- Set an operating limit below the point where latency or failures rise sharply.
- Re-test after browser, driver, page, or infrastructure changes.
Smaller Nodes reduce the blast radius of a host failure. Selenium’s examples describe a small Grid as standalone or up to five Nodes, a middle Grid as six to 60 Nodes, and a large Grid as 60 to 100 Nodes or distributed with more than 100 Nodes. These are rough, environment-dependent descriptions, not limits. Selenium’s wording is direct: “There is no ‘one size fits all.’” Node count alone does not determine sessions per host.
Scale down safely with draining
Do not terminate a Node that still owns live sessions unless your failure policy accepts abrupt loss. Mark it draining so no new sessions are assigned. Allow active sessions to finish or expire under your application’s cleanup policy, then restart or replace the Node. The Grid architecture documentation describes draining as the state in which the Node stops receiving sessions and exits or restarts after the last current session closes.
Track active-session count, oldest session age, and termination reason during a drain. If a session never closes, apply a documented application timeout and investigate the leak rather than repeatedly force-killing Nodes.

Secure the control plane
Keep the Grid behind authenticated, restricted network boundaries and firewall rules. Selenium warns that an exposed Grid can give outsiders access to Grid infrastructure, internal applications and files, or the ability to run custom binaries. Do not publish an unauthenticated Router or Node endpoint on the public internet.
- Expose only the required client endpoint through a private network or authenticated gateway.
- Restrict Node-to-Node and Router-to-Node traffic with firewall rules.
- Use short-lived credentials and separate test identities from production accounts.
- Sanitize uploaded files, downloads, logs, and screenshots before they leave the test network.
- Patch browsers, drivers, Grid components, and operating systems on a defined schedule.
Common failure modes and fixes

- One explicit state boundary per independent job.
- Unique or coordinated backend data for every parallel worker.
- Session ownership, capabilities, Node, state, and timestamps recorded.
- Capacity limits based on representative measurements, not the CPU/RAM rule alone.
- Queue, startup latency, resource saturation, failures, and session age monitored.
- Nodes drained before replacement or restart.
- Grid endpoints private, authenticated, and firewall-restricted.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should every test launch a separate browser process?
No. Playwright contexts can isolate browser state inside one browser process; use separate processes or Nodes when resource, browser-version, or failure-isolation requirements demand them.
What is the maximum number of sessions one machine can run?
There is no universal number. Measure the actual browser mix, pages, CPU, memory, I/O, and failure behavior in your environment.
Can a new browser context isolate my database records?
No. Contexts isolate browser-side cookies and storage. Accounts, records, queues, and external APIs need unique data or explicit coordination.
