A custom session-cookie flaw—not a break in Microsoft Entra ID or its multifactor authentication (MFA)—let an attacker impersonate users in a yard-management application, according to Resecurity’s October 1, 2026 report. In an authorized staging assessment, Resecurity says it impersonated 95 of 241 tested user IDs, including elevated accounts. The report says production systems were not tested.

What the vulnerability was

The affected application used Microsoft Entra ID for single sign-on, then issued and accepted its own session cookie. That application cookie was a separate credential and trust boundary from Entra authentication.

Resecurity describes two defects that made the cookie forgeable: the signing secret was hard-coded and identical to the cookie name, while the signed payload used a publicly exposed user database ID instead of an unpredictable session identifier. Because the application treated the signed cookie as proof of identity, someone who obtained a user ID could construct a cookie the application would accept—without the victim’s password, a fresh MFA challenge, or an Entra access token. The report does not name the application vendor or identify a CVE.

What the test demonstrated—and did not

Resecurity reports successful impersonation of 95 distinct employee accounts among 241 tested user IDs during an authorized assessment. Some accounts had elevated privileges, and the report says a forged administrator session made a state-changing request. The assessment was confined to staging; production systems were not tested, test records were restored, and identities were anonymized. The figure is therefore a staging-test result, not a count of real production accounts compromised.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The application used Entra SSO and RS256-signed access tokens, but that did not protect its separate custom session mechanism. Once the application accepted its own forged cookie as identity proof, the upstream sign-in controls no longer helped. The disclosure is about flawed application-side session handling, not a demonstrated cryptographic or MFA vulnerability in Entra ID.

How this differs from AiTM cookie theft

Both attacks can give an intruder access to an authenticated session, but they obtain that access differently. In adversary-in-the-middle (AiTM) phishing, an attacker proxies a victim’s sign-in and steals the legitimate session cookie after authentication. In the yard-management case, the report describes forging the application’s custom cookie because its signing design and identity value were predictable.

Question AiTM cookie theft Yard-management app flaw
Where does the weakness lie? A phishing proxy captures an already authenticated session cookie. The application’s custom session implementation accepts a forged cookie.
What does the attacker need? A captured, valid authenticated cookie. A user ID and the ability to exploit the predictable signing design described by Resecurity.
What needs to be addressed? Phishing resistance, device restrictions, and detection of suspicious session use. The app’s session design, signing-secret rotation, and revocation of affected sessions.
What evidence is cited here? Microsoft reporting on broader AiTM activity, not this application flaw. Resecurity’s authorized staging assessment of one unnamed application.

Microsoft explains that AiTM cookie theft is not an MFA vulnerability: “since AiTM phishing steals the session cookie, the attacker gets authenticated to a session on the user’s behalf, regardless of the sign-in method the latter uses.” That distinction matters: MFA helps protect sign-in, but it cannot make an application’s independently issued, forgeable session cookie trustworthy.

What affected application operators should do

  1. Replace the vulnerable session design. Use random, unpredictable session identifiers and keep the authoritative session state server-side, rather than treating a publicly available user ID in a signed cookie as a sufficient identity credential.
  2. Rotate the signing secret. The report recommends replacing the compromised secret and using strong, separate secrets for development, staging, and production.
  3. Revoke existing sessions everywhere the cookie works. Invalidate sessions created under the weak design on every host that accepts the cookie. Do not assume that changing an Entra password alone clears the application’s own session store.
  4. Review application and authentication logs. Look for unusual session creation, account changes, administrative actions, or activity inconsistent with the expected user and device. Investigate suspected misuse and follow the organization’s incident-response process.

Microsoft’s guidance on revoking Microsoft Entra sessions notes that policy violations, including password changes, can revoke sessions. That is not a substitute for checking the affected application’s own session store and every host accepting its cookie; service behavior and configuration can differ. See Microsoft’s session-revocation guidance.

How to reduce related identity risks

After correcting the application, layer identity and device protections around it. Microsoft recommends phishing-resistant authentication such as FIDO2 security keys, Windows Hello for Business, or certificate-based authentication; restricting critical access to known, managed devices; using Conditional Access; and monitoring for suspicious sign-ins and token replay. A FIDO2 security key can reduce exposure to some phishing attacks, but it does not repair a custom application that accepts forged sessions.

Microsoft’s 2026 Tycoon2FA coverage says Defender XDR can raise “Stolen session cookie was used” and “User compromised through session cookie hijack” alerts for Entra customers using Edge, through Defender for Cloud Apps connectors for Microsoft 365 and Azure. This is a specific product and connector context, not a general guarantee that Microsoft detects every forged application cookie.

Keep broader attack statistics in context

Microsoft has reported wider AiTM activity, but those figures describe separate campaigns and telemetry—not the prevalence or impact of this application defect. Microsoft Threat Intelligence said iterations of a separate AiTM campaign targeted more than 10,000 organizations since September 2021. Microsoft Learn, attributing figures to the 2024 Microsoft Digital Defense Report, presents an estimated 39,000 token-theft incidents per day as Microsoft’s detection estimate and reports a 146% year-over-year rise in AiTM phishing. None of those numbers is a production compromise count for the yard-management application.
