XML and JSP can work together in three different ways: a JSP page can be written using XML syntax, a JSP can generate XML as its response, and an application can use XML configuration such as web.xml. These are related, but none means the same thing. Jakarta Server Pages (JSP)—called Jakarta Pages in current release material—is a server-side view technology: the web container translates a page into a servlet implementation that produces the response sent to the client.
How JSP and XML fit into a Java web application
When a client requests a page, the web container routes the request to the relevant application component. A servlet or other Java class can obtain data and make it available to a JSP view. The JSP container processes the page, translating it into a servlet page implementation that runs to create the response. The browser receives that response, not JSP source code running in the browser.
- Java application code handles request processing and business or domain decisions.
- The JSP view combines template text with dynamic values, tags, and Expression Language (EL) to present data.
- The response is sent to the client as HTML, XML, or another suitable format, depending on what the page generates and declares.
The key distinction is that JSP describes how a server-side page is authored and processed; XML may describe the JSP source, the response, or application configuration.
What is a JSP document or .jspx file?
A JSP document is a JSP page expressed in XML syntax. It uses XML elements and namespace declarations to represent JSP constructs, so it must be well-formed XML and follow the JSP document rules. A file ending in .jspx is a common convention, but the container’s configuration and identification rules determine how a file is treated; the extension alone should not be assumed to work identically in every application.

XML authoring can be useful when a team relies on XML-aware tools or wants the source itself to follow XML well-formedness rules. That does not establish that the page’s business behavior is correct, that its output is secure, or that a generated response validates against an XML schema. JSP document validation also has a separate role in tag-library validation.

Can JSP generate XML?
Yes. A JSP page can generate an XML response, including XHTML or another XML vocabulary, as long as the response’s content type, encoding, and generated structure are appropriate for the consumer. The page’s source syntax does not decide the response format: a conventional .jsp can produce XML, while a JSP document can produce HTML or another response.

For example, a view could render a record supplied by a Java component as XML elements. In a real application, ensure dynamic values are escaped for the output context and that the response declares an appropriate content type and character encoding. Using XML syntax for the JSP source does not automatically escape values or make the response valid XML.
What does web.xml do?
web.xml is a separate XML deployment descriptor for a web application, not the JSP page itself. It can describe application and deployment settings. Jakarta EE tutorial examples use a <web-app> root element with the Jakarta EE namespace, schema location, and a version declaration.

Whether a particular setting belongs in web.xml depends on the application and platform version. Some component configuration can be supplied through annotations, so a deployment descriptor is not a universal requirement for every servlet mapping. It may also contain JSP-related configuration, tag-library mappings, or other deployment information supported by the target container.
Keep business logic in Java classes
JSP permits embedded Java code, but the Eclipse Foundation’s Jakarta EE overview advises against putting business logic in JSP views: it recommends coding that logic in Java classes. In a clean separation, Java code decides what data and outcome the request needs; JSP focuses on presenting that data with template text, tags, and EL.

Older applications may contain scriptlet-heavy JSP pages. Treat those as legacy patterns rather than a preferred design for new work. Refactor incrementally: move a discrete decision or data operation into an appropriate Java class, then simplify the view to render the result. This keeps page presentation easier to understand without pretending scriptlets are syntactically impossible.

The Jakarta Pages 4.0 release is associated with Jakarta EE 11 and sets Java SE 17 or higher as its minimum. These are distinct version identifiers: the JSP specification version is not the Jakarta EE platform version or the Java SE version. The release removes code deprecated in JSP 3.1, including the isThreadSafe directive attribute and the jsp:plugin action, and aligns with Servlet and Expression Language changes. Use syntax, tag libraries, namespaces, and APIs compatible with the container you deploy to. In particular, do not mix older javax.*-era examples with Jakarta jakarta.* APIs as though they were interchangeable; migration may require changes beyond the JSP file. The Jakarta Server Pages Specification 4.0 defines JSP and JSP document behavior, while the Jakarta EE Tutorial’s web application guide provides an introductory view of application structure and deployment descriptors.
