For a self-hosted .NET observability stack, instrument your application with OpenTelemetry, send logs, traces, and metrics over OTLP, and configure a collector or monitoring backend to receive and retain them. Aspire Service Defaults can provide a practical starting configuration even if you do not use Aspire orchestration. Aspire Dashboard is useful for local inspection, but its telemetry is held in limited in-memory storage, so it should not be mistaken for a durable production backend.
How a self-hosted .NET observability stack fits together
Observability is a pipeline rather than a single .NET package: application APIs and instrumentation libraries produce telemetry, OpenTelemetry collects and exports it, and a receiver stores or presents it.
- Instrument the application. .NET provides APIs that libraries and applications can use to emit logs, metrics, and tracing activity.
- Collect and enrich telemetry. OpenTelemetry SDK components and instrumentation packages collect data from those APIs and from supported frameworks and dependencies.
- Export it. Configure an exporter to send telemetry to an OTLP receiver or use a backend-specific exporter when required.
- Store and analyze it. The receiving collector or monitoring system determines persistence, retention, querying, dashboards, and operational controls.
Microsoft describes OpenTelemetry for .NET as working with the platform’s existing APIs: Microsoft.Extensions.Logging.ILogger<TCategoryName> for logs, System.Diagnostics.Metrics.Meter for metrics, and System.Diagnostics.ActivitySource and Activity for distributed tracing. OpenTelemetry supplies collection and export components; it does not, by itself, provide the durable storage and analysis experience your team may expect from an observability backend.
The OpenTelemetry .NET documentation lists traces, metrics, and logs as stable. Its runtime-support statements are version-sensitive, so check that documentation against your target .NET or .NET Framework version before adopting a particular package set.

Why OTLP is the usual transport choice
OTLP is a vendor-neutral protocol for sending telemetry from an application or collector to a compatible receiver. Microsoft calls it a “vendor neutral network protocol option for transmitting telemetry data” in its .NET observability guidance. Using OTLP lets application instrumentation target a standard transport instead of coupling telemetry generation to one backend’s APIs or data structures.
OTLP is a transport, not a storage system. You still need to choose and configure the receiving collector or monitoring service. Confirm that the receiver accepts the OTLP protocol and signal types you intend to send; some integrations support only a subset of telemetry features.

Start with Aspire Service Defaults, if useful
For a .NET application, Aspire Service Defaults can reduce setup work. Microsoft’s guidance says the project includes the OpenTelemetry SDK and ASP.NET, HttpClient, and runtime instrumentation packages, and configures OTLP export for the Aspire Dashboard. You can reuse the Service Defaults project without adopting Aspire’s AppHost orchestration.
This makes Service Defaults a convenient starting point, not a requirement and not a complete production observability platform. Review which instrumentation is enabled, which signals it emits, and where the configured exporter sends them; then adapt those settings to your actual receiver and deployment environment.

Use Aspire Dashboard for local inspection, not assumed persistence
The Aspire Dashboard can receive OTLP telemetry and display it during development. Aspire documents its local dashboard telemetry storage as in memory and subject to limits. The dashboard also evicts older telemetry when storage fills and truncates some incoming attributes and span events. Those behaviors make it useful for inspecting recent development activity, but they do not establish durable retention for deployed services.
When deploying, configure OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_ENDPOINT for a collector or monitoring service reachable within the target environment. Aspire’s deployment guidance notes that OTLP export is disabled when the endpoint is not configured. Do not leave an application pointed at a developer’s local dashboard or assume that a running dashboard automatically gives a deployment durable storage.

Secure dashboard and receiver access
Telemetry can expose sensitive operational details. The Aspire Dashboard README warns that displayed data can include resource configuration, environment variables, console logs, and telemetry. It also says standalone mode accepts unauthenticated incoming telemetry by default. If access extends beyond trusted local development, put authentication and network controls in place for both the UI and telemetry receiver, and restrict exposure to the appropriate users and services.
Verify the exact dashboard configuration and security behavior for the version you deploy: defaults and capabilities can change. In particular, do not expose an unauthenticated receiver or sensitive dashboard to an untrusted network.

Choose a backend by operational requirements
Microsoft’s .NET guidance points to Prometheus, Grafana, and Jaeger examples and describes Prometheus and Grafana among the open-source monitoring and APM options available to OpenTelemetry users. Those examples establish possible components, not a universal winner or a like-for-like comparison of their current durability, query capabilities, complexity, or operating cost. Compare your candidate receiver and backend against the needs of your workload:
- Persistence and retention: Does it store the signals durably for the retention period you need, or only show recent in-memory data?
- Signal coverage: Can it ingest and analyze the logs, traces, and metrics you require? Check the specific integration because support can differ by signal or feature.
- Transport compatibility: Does it accept your configured OTLP protocol and endpoint, or will you need a backend-specific exporter?
- Security: How are the user interface and OTLP receiver authenticated, and which networks and identities can reach them?
- Deployment fit: Can the application send data to a collector or monitoring service local to its deployment environment?
- Operating effort and limits: What capacity, retention, resource, and maintenance limits will your team need to manage?
The cited Microsoft and Aspire material describes integration paths and configuration concepts, but does not settle these trade-offs for every deployment. Select the stack that meets your own retention, security, scale, and operational constraints rather than treating any one named tool as best for all .NET services.
Quick Recap
A practical deployment checklist
- Confirm runtime and package support. Check the current OpenTelemetry .NET documentation for your target runtime and select compatible SDK, instrumentation, and exporter packages.
- Identify the telemetry sources. Decide which existing logging, metrics, and tracing APIs your application and dependencies use, and ensure the relevant instrumentation is enabled.
- Choose the receiving system first. Verify its OTLP support, signal coverage, persistence, retention, and security model before wiring production services to it.
- Set the environment-specific endpoint. Configure
OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_ENDPOINTto the collector or monitoring service reachable from the deployed application environment. - Test the whole path. Confirm that each required signal reaches the receiver and appears in its analysis interface; validate that retention and access controls behave as expected.
- Keep local inspection separate from production storage. Use Aspire Dashboard for local troubleshooting where appropriate, and use a backend whose persistence and security meet deployment needs.
