In Selenium 4, prefer explicit waits for specific conditions, avoid mixing them with implicit waits, and treat document readiness as only one part of page loading.
How do I stop Selenium tests from being flaky?
Start by identifying the state a command requires, then wait for that state instead of guessing how long the browser will take. Selenium describes race conditions between browser automation and application updates as a primary cause of flaky tests. A page can reach document readiness while JavaScript is still rendering a control or changing the content your next step depends on. See Selenium’s Waiting Strategies.
Wait for a condition, not a fixed delay
A fixed sleep is a guess: if it is too short, the test may continue before the page is ready; if it is longer than necessary, every run pays the delay. Use a bounded wait for the event that makes the next action valid, such as an element becoming visible, expected text appearing, or the page title changing. Selenium’s Expected Conditions documentation describes common condition-based waits; availability and syntax vary across language bindings.
For example, a test that needs to click a newly revealed Save button should wait for that button to become visible or clickable, rather than waiting an arbitrary number of seconds and hoping the application has finished.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Make timeouts meaningful
Set a finite timeout that gives the application a reasonable opportunity to reach the required state. If it expires, let the test fail with a useful condition and context. Increasing a timeout without understanding what state is missing can hide a synchronization problem rather than fix it.
Should I use implicit or explicit waits?
Implicit wait is a global timeout applied when WebDriver locates elements; Selenium documents its default as zero. An explicit wait polls for a particular condition at the point where the test needs it. Selenium warns that mixing the two can produce unpredictable observed wait times. For state-specific interactions, explicit waits make the test’s expectation clearer and easier to diagnose. Details are in Selenium’s wait guide.

| Approach | Scope | Best understood as | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Implicit wait | Element-location calls throughout the session | A global allowance for finding elements | Does not express a particular application state; mixing it with explicit waits makes timing less predictable. |
| Explicit wait | A specific point in the test | A named condition that must become true before proceeding | Requires choosing the right condition and timeout, but gives clearer intent and failure context. |
Choose a consistent strategy and avoid setting a nonzero implicit wait alongside explicit waits. Explicit wait APIs differ by binding; use the official documentation for your language rather than copying syntax from another language.
What does page-load readiness tell me?
Selenium’s navigation strategy controls when a navigation command returns relative to the document’s readiness state. The default waits for complete; eager waits for interactive; and none does not block on document readiness. These are session-wide policies, not guarantees that a dynamic application is ready for the next interaction. A single-page app may continue rendering after complete.

Changing to eager or none may let navigation return sooner, but the test must then explicitly wait for the page-specific state it needs. Do not use readyState alone as proof that a control is visible or usable. See Browser Options and Waiting Strategies.
| Strategy | Navigation returns when | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
normal (default) |
Document readiness is complete |
Application scripts may still update the interface afterward. |
eager |
Document readiness is interactive |
Wait for the application condition needed before interacting. |
none |
Without waiting for document readiness | Provide deliberate synchronization after navigation. |
How do I make Selenium tests easier to maintain?
Keep page knowledge—locators and page-specific operations—in one place instead of repeating it across test cases. Selenium’s Page Object Model guidance describes the pattern as a way to improve maintenance and reduce duplicated code.

Use meaningful, stable locators
Choose a locator that identifies the intended element clearly and is unlikely to change for unrelated visual reasons. Avoid scattering page structure assumptions throughout tests. When a locator needs updating, a centralized page object or smaller page-component object limits the number of places to inspect. Selenium’s Web Elements documentation covers locating and interacting with elements.
Keep assertions in the test
Page objects should generally expose actions and information about the page; behavioral assertions belong in test code. A page object can check that the expected page or critical elements loaded when it is constructed, but the test should assert the outcome it is verifying. This separation helps keep page operations reusable without hiding what the test actually proves.

When should I use WebElement methods or the Actions API?
For ordinary interactions, use the relevant element method—such as click, send keys, clear, submit, or selection behavior. Selenium aims for these commands to resemble user interaction: it attempts to scroll an off-screen element into view and checks interactability before acting. If a normal element command fails, first check that the locator targets the intended element and that the required state has been reached.
Use the Actions API when the test genuinely needs lower-level or combined input actions, such as a sequence of pointer or keyboard inputs. It is not a routine workaround for a stale locator or a page that was not synchronized. See also Selenium’s Web Elements guidance.
What should I update for Selenium 4?
Selenium 4 session configuration uses browser-specific options classes. For remote sessions, pass an options instance that selects the browser. In Java, timeout methods use Duration rather than the older (long, TimeUnit) signatures. Use W3C WebDriver capability names, and give vendor-specific capabilities the appropriate vendor prefix. Exact APIs vary by language binding; consult Selenium’s Selenium 4 upgrade guidance and the options documentation for your binding.
How can I capture screenshots without setting up a browser?
If the goal is a website screenshot rather than an interactive test, a screenshot API can avoid maintaining a WebDriver session and browser setup. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its clean-shot options accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the outcome reported in response headers.

Troubleshooting common Selenium failures
- An element is not found immediately after navigation: document readiness may have completed before the application rendered that element. Wait for the element or the relevant page state explicitly.
- A test times out despite a long sleep: the delay may not match the condition, or the expected state may never occur. Replace the sleep with a condition-based wait and check whether the application reached that state.
- Wait durations seem inconsistent: check whether implicit and explicit waits are both configured. Selenium warns against mixing them; use a predictable wait strategy.
- A click fails on an element that exists: confirm the locator identifies the intended control and wait until it is interactable. Use Actions only when the input truly requires a lower-level or combined action.
- A page object test hides what is being verified: move behavioral assertions into test code and keep the page object focused on page operations and information.
- Selenium 4 setup code no longer compiles: check the binding-specific upgrade guide for options classes and timeout signatures; Java timeout APIs use
Duration.
