Use Selenium’s screenshot API for the language you are running: Python’s driver.save_screenshot(), Java’s TakesScreenshot#getScreenshotAs(), or C#’s ITakesScreenshot.GetScreenshot(). To capture one element, locate it first and call that binding’s element screenshot method. These calls capture the current browsing context or selected element; do not assume they produce a full-page image in every browser and driver combination.
What Selenium screenshot methods capture
A WebDriver screenshot represents the current browsing context (normally the active window or tab) at the moment the command runs. An element screenshot represents the rendered bounds of a specific element. The official Selenium examples do not establish one universal full-page behavior across all browsers, drivers, and language bindings, so verify the exact implementation when you need an entire document.
In every language, load the page, take the screenshot, save it to a path, and quit the driver in a finally block so browser processes are cleaned up after errors.
Python: save the current window to PNG
Selenium’s Python API provides save_screenshot() (also exposed as get_screenshot_as_file()) for writing the current window as a PNG. Both return False when an I/O error prevents saving; pass a filename ending in .png. The example below follows the official documentation: Python WebDriver API reference.

driver.get_screenshot_as_png()returns PNG bytes, which you can write yourself or pass to an image-processing library.driver.get_screenshot_as_base64()returns a base64 string suitable for embedding in HTML.
Java: use TakesScreenshot and copy the file
In Java, cast the driver to TakesScreenshot, request OutputType.FILE, then copy the temporary file to your destination. This is the pattern shown in Selenium’s official windows and tabs documentation.

C#: save a Screenshot object as PNG
The C# binding uses ITakesScreenshot. Call GetScreenshot(), then choose the output format when saving. Selenium documents PNG, BMP, GIF, JPEG, and TIFF values for ScreenshotImageFormat.

Why a Selenium screenshot may not be full page
“Current window” and “full page” are different requirements. A current-context screenshot can correspond to the viewport or to browser-specific behavior, while a full-page capture must include content outside the visible viewport. Selenium’s reviewed documentation does not promise identical full-page results across implementations. If full-page output is essential, check the exact browser, driver, Selenium binding version, and capture behavior in your test environment rather than naming every current-window screenshot “full page.”

Practical checks before saving
- Wait until the page state you need is present before taking the image.
- Make sure the destination directory exists and the process has write permission.
- Use a unique filename when parallel tests could write simultaneously.
- For an element image, confirm the selector identifies the intended visible element.
- Keep the browser and driver lifecycle inside
try/finally(or the equivalent cleanup pattern).
