An AST sandbox is not, by itself, a safe place to run AI-generated TypeScript. Parsing, rejecting, or rewriting syntax can enforce a source-code policy, but containment depends on the runtime, the capabilities exposed to the code, and the host and infrastructure controls around execution.
What an AST sandbox can—and cannot—secure
Syntax policy is not containment
An abstract syntax tree (AST) represents a program’s structure. A tool can parse generated TypeScript, reject constructs your product does not permit, or transform the source before execution. That can help keep code within a documented subset or remove TypeScript-only syntax. It does not, on its own, stop the resulting JavaScript from using filesystem, network, or other capabilities available in its execution environment.
For example, LangChain’s @langchain/quickjs package describes stripping type annotations, interfaces, and generics before evaluating code in QuickJS WASM, with explicitly bridged helpers. The important architectural point is the combination of a transform and a constrained runtime—not a guarantee that a general AST allowlist is secure.
Compilation is not a security boundary
TypeScript’s compiler parses, type-checks, and emits JavaScript; it does not execute the compiled input. Microsoft’s tsc security properties also note that untrusted compiler inputs can influence file reads and writes, while adversarial type checking can consume unbounded CPU or memory without external controls. Treat compilation as a build step, not a sandbox.

Do not use Node.js vm as a security sandbox
Node.js v26.10.0 documentation is explicit: “The node:vm module is not a security mechanism. Do not use it to run untrusted code.” A V8 context gives code a different execution global; that is not a security guarantee. See the Node.js vm documentation.
Do not infer that another library is secure merely because it uses a different context or calls itself a sandbox. A 2023 USENIX study, SandDriller, tested a set of JavaScript sandbox systems and reported 15 known vm2 breakouts in its comparison table. That is the paper’s dated count for its scope, not a current vulnerability count or a verdict on every present-day runtime.

- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
Choose the execution boundary for the code’s authority
The right environment depends on what the generated code must do and what damage a runtime or bridge flaw could cause. Runtime documentation describes intended behavior and features; it is not an independent security certification.
| Approach | What the cited documentation describes | Practical fit and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| V8 isolate | TanStack’s driver documentation describes fresh V8 isolates and tool calls bridged to the host. It also lists deployment, dependency, browser-support, and resource-control trade-offs. TanStack driver documentation | Can suit short tasks that need only a small set of application functions. The bridge remains part of the security boundary; isolate details and limits depend on the implementation and configuration. |
| QuickJS/WASM | TanStack describes QuickJS execution options; the run documentation describes fresh QuickJS contexts in worker threads without ambient Node.js, filesystem, environment variables, modules, or network access. Host functions are explicit. | Can suit constrained JavaScript or TypeScript tasks. Check compatibility with required language features and integrations. The stated properties are vendor descriptions, not proof against every attack. |
| Externally isolated workspace, such as a VM or appropriately configured sandbox | OpenAI’s sandbox security guidance and Docker’s security model discuss isolation, network restrictions, mount permissions, and credential handling. | May be a better architectural fit when code needs packages, shell commands, or substantial filesystem work. It adds deployment and operational responsibilities; “sandbox” alone does not establish how strong the boundary is. |
Compare the actual isolation mechanism, ambient access, bridge design, supported language and runtime features, resource controls, deployment constraints, patching process, and consequences of a runtime or bridge flaw. The cited material does not establish one universally best runtime.

Build a layered execution path
- Receive code as untrusted input. Keep generated source separate from trusted dispatch logic and credentials. Do not treat a model’s intent, a successful parse, or a type-check as proof that its code is safe.
- Apply a narrow syntax policy only when it serves a product need. Document the constructs you allow or transform. Syntax deny-lists and rewrites can be incomplete, and language syntax evolves; do not rely on them as the containment boundary.
- Compile or transform without granting execution authority. Keep compiler inputs and outputs within deliberately chosen file permissions. Apply external time and memory controls to compilation and type checking, since adversarial inputs can consume substantial resources.
- Execute in a constrained runtime or isolated compute environment. Choose based on required capabilities and threat model, not on the word “sandbox.” Set execution time and memory limits where supported, and define filesystem and network access explicitly.
- Expose only a small host-function interface. Give guest code the specific application operations it needs rather than ambient host objects or general-purpose access. Keep trusted dispatch and credentials on the host side.
- Validate every call at the trusted boundary. Check arguments against the operation’s requirements, enforce authorization and limits there, and constrain returned data. A fresh context and serialized arguments/results can reduce ambient access, but they do not make an overly powerful host function safe.
- Return only intentionally disclosed results. Treat results, errors, and other cross-boundary data as part of the design. Passing host objects, callbacks, or exceptions across the boundary can reintroduce authority or expose information.
Control tools, files, network, and secrets
Keep capabilities small and deliberate
A bridged function is permission to perform an action, not just a convenience method. Prefer narrow operations with explicit arguments over broad helpers that can read arbitrary records, write arbitrary files, or make unrestricted requests. Authorize sensitive actions in trusted host code. Where supported, approval or authentication interruptions can add a deliberate checkpoint; the run SDK documents resumable interruptions, but this does not replace authorization at the host boundary.
Limit infrastructure access
- Set execution time and memory caps where the chosen runtime supports them, and enforce additional limits outside the guest when necessary.
- Allow only required network destinations; if network access is unnecessary, disable it.
- Share only necessary files, with narrowly scoped read and write permissions. Review mounts and workspace persistence.
- Keep high-value credentials out of the guest environment. If a host capability needs credentials, have trusted host code use them for a narrowly authorized operation rather than exposing the secret to generated code.
OpenAI’s security guidance and Docker’s sandbox security documentation discuss isolation, network controls, mounts, and credentials. Apply those controls to the actual deployment; a runtime boundary is only one part of the system.

Review the whole boundary, not just the parser
- Syntax: Is the policy narrow, documented, and tested against the language forms the parser accepts? Does a transform alter code in ways that need separate validation?
- Runtime: What can guest code access without calling a bridge? Is that property provided by the actual runtime configuration?
- Bridge: Which operations are exposed? Are arguments authorized and constrained, and are results minimized?
- Infrastructure: What are the time, memory, network, filesystem, and persistence limits? Where are credentials held?
- Operations: How are runtime and dependencies updated, and what happens if the runtime or bridge boundary fails?
Reassess these questions whenever the runtime, transform, bridge code, or available tools change. A parser can contribute to policy enforcement, but the defensible boundary is the complete chain from generated source through execution and result handling.
