SDI and HDMI both carry digital video between production devices; neither one encodes a stream or sends it over the internet. Choose the interface that matches your camera, switcher, capture device or encoder, and monitor, then confirm that every device and cable supports your resolution, frame rate, signal rate and cable run.
What SDI and HDMI do in a streaming setup
A cable connects parts of the production chain. For example, a camera may send video to a switcher or encoder, which may also connect to a monitor. The encoder’s supported streaming protocol and network connection—not whether the production cable is SDI or HDMI—determine how video is delivered online.
Professional equipment can combine interfaces. Blackmagic Design’s Streaming Encoder 4K, for example, has a 12G-SDI input and HDMI monitor output, and supports direct H.264/H.265 streaming over Ethernet using RTMP or SRT. Those are specifications of that model, not universal capabilities of SDI equipment. Blackmagic Design Streaming Encoder 4K specifications
Which should you use?
Start with the ports your equipment actually has. If the camera outputs SDI and the encoder accepts SDI, an SDI cable is the direct connection. If both ends have HDMI, use HDMI. If the source and destination do not match, determine whether a suitable converter is available before buying anything; confirm its direction and support for the video format you need.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check the entire signal path
- Identify the camera’s video output and the next device’s input.
- Check any switcher, capture device, encoder and monitor connections, including whether a monitor output is separate from the video input.
- Confirm the connectors and formats at every link. A connector’s shape alone does not establish that a device supports your intended resolution or frame rate.
- If interfaces differ, verify that a converter supports the required direction and formats. A converter is not automatically compatible simply because its connectors look right.
Blackmagic Design’s H.264 Pro Recorder manual explicitly describes connecting an SDI or HD-SDI cable to that recorder’s SDI/HD-SDI port. The same manual says HDMI provides the same uncompressed digital quality as high-end SDI in that product context. Blackmagic Design H.264 Pro Recorder manual and support
Compare formats and cable runs before buying
SDI refers to a family of interfaces with different signal rates; supported standards depend on the specific device. Blackmagic’s Streaming Encoder 4K specifications, for instance, list SDI rates from 1.5G through 12G and enumerate supported HD and Ultra HD formats. Check the manuals for both endpoints and the cable documentation for the precise combination you plan to use.

Do not choose based on a universal maximum-distance claim. Cable construction, signal rate, video format and the equipment at both ends all matter, and there is no single SDI-versus-HDMI run length that applies to every setup. Blackmagic’s older H.264 Pro Recorder manual describes standard HDMI cables as typically 6 feet or 2 meters and intended for short distances in that recorder’s context; that statement should not be treated as a limit for all current HDMI systems.
| Setup question | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Do the devices connect directly? | Camera output, switcher or capture input, encoder input and monitor input; use a matching interface or confirm a compatible conversion path. |
| Will the chosen format work? | Resolution, frame rate and supported SDI rate or HDMI capability on the exact devices. |
| Will the cable cover the run? | The cable specification for the required signal rate and format, along with endpoint support for that run. |
| How does the stream reach the platform? | The encoder’s streaming protocol and network connection. A video cable does not select a platform or deliver video online. |
Where SDI fits in modern production
SDI remains common in broadcast and outside-broadcast workflows. Video-over-IP standards are another part of professional production: SMPTE describes ST 2110 as professional video, audio and data over IP, designed to replace long-used SDI in TV stations, outside-broadcast facilities and global video-network interconnection. That is a broader production-network context, not a reason to assume an individual camera or encoder supports ST 2110. SMPTE ST 2110

Common problems and what to check
- No picture: Confirm that the cable connects an output to an input, that both ports use the same interface, and that the devices support the selected resolution and frame rate.
- A converter does not work: Check its direction and supported formats against both devices. HDMI-to-SDI and SDI-to-HDMI are different conversion paths; do not assume one works in reverse.
- Video fails over a longer run: Recheck the exact cable specification at the signal rate and format in use, plus the endpoint documentation. A generic distance rule cannot diagnose every combination.
- Video reaches the encoder but not the livestream: Check the encoder’s network connection and supported streaming protocol separately from the camera-to-encoder cable. For instance, Blackmagic’s Streaming Encoder 4K lists RTMP and SRT over Ethernet as its streaming options.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud loops the uploaded videos, so nothing has to stay on at home; it does not stream from a camera and it streams to YouTube only. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card, with one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Learn about StreamNeo or start your free day.
