Choose by the artifact your application needs: a screenshot API returns an image of a rendered page, while a web scraping API usually returns rendered HTML, text, or structured data. The categories overlap—Browserless and ScrapingBee document both capabilities—so compare the exact endpoint, rendering controls, and billing model rather than relying on product labels.
Screenshot API and scraping API: what each returns
| Question | Screenshot API | Web scraping API |
|---|---|---|
| Primary output | PNG, JPEG, WebP, or sometimes PDF representing the rendered page | Rendered HTML, text, or structured JSON fields |
| Best for | Visual records, regression evidence, social previews, invoices, and computer-vision input | Search indexes, analysis, feeds, alerts, datasets, and downstream text processing |
| What is preserved | Layout, typography, colors, images, and visible state | Content and structure; visual styling is not the primary artifact |
| Typical controls | Viewport or full-page capture, format, device, waits, selectors, injected CSS | Selectors, schemas, rendered-content options, pagination, and extraction rules |
When to use a screenshot API
Choose pixels when appearance is the data
- You need an auditable visual record of what a visitor saw.
- A vision model must inspect layout, charts, canvas elements, or visual context that is awkward to represent as text.
- You are generating previews, PDF-like documents, or visual regression artifacts.
- Exact coordinates, spacing, responsive breakpoints, or styling matter.
Viewport versus full-page capture
A viewport shot captures only the visible browser area. Full-page capture stitches or scrolls through the document and is better for long pages, but dynamic content and lazy-loaded images can change while the page is being traversed. ScrapingBee documents viewport capture by default and a separate screenshot_full_page=True option. ScreenshotOne documents more than one full-page algorithm, including section-based capture. Treat these as documented options, not proof that one vendor produces better images on every site.
When to use a web scraping API
Choose fields, text, or markup for processing
- Your application needs titles, prices, article text, links, or schema-shaped records.
- You will search, classify, deduplicate, aggregate, or store the result in a database.
- Consumers need machine-readable values rather than a visual copy.
Rendered pages require browser execution
If JavaScript builds the content after the initial response, request a browser-rendered workflow. ScrapingBee requires render_js=True for its screenshot option and documents JSON responses that can include screenshot and HTML together. Browserless lists rendered HTML, CSS-selector extraction, and smart-scrape endpoints, with automatic fallbacks described for blocked or JavaScript-heavy pages. These are vendor descriptions, not guarantees for every target.
Can one request return both?
Sometimes. ScrapingBee documents using screenshot=True with json_response=True to receive screenshot and HTML together. Browserless presents screenshot, content, scrape, and smart-scrape APIs in one REST offering, although the endpoint types remain distinct. A combined response can simplify workflows when you need a visual audit plus extracted fields; check how each option affects credits, response size, and latency before standardizing it.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Comparison checklist for choosing a service
Output and rendering
- Does the endpoint return an image, PDF, HTML, text, JSON, or a combination?
- Can it execute JavaScript and wait for a selector, browser event, network idle, or fixed delay?
- How does it handle consent banners, bot checks, timeouts, lazy images, and blank pages?
Capture and extraction controls
- For images: viewport size, device emulation, full-page method, format, element or selector capture, and injected CSS or JavaScript.
- For data: CSS selectors, schemas, pagination, normalized fields, and raw rendered markup.
- For both: cookies, headers, authorization, user agent, geographic or timezone settings, and request blocking.
Operations and cost
- Compare concurrency, request credits, volume pricing, caching, asynchronous jobs, and webhook behavior using the current official plan terms.
- Measure your own representative URLs. Record success, missing content, image completeness, extraction correctness, response time, and actual billed usage.
- Use HTTPS. ScreenshotOne’s documentation warns that plain HTTP can expose access keys, authorization headers, cookies, and other sensitive data in transit.
Available documentation does not establish a fair cross-vendor ranking for latency, reliability, visual fidelity, or extraction accuracy. Feature lists are not benchmarks.
Services and documented capabilities
| Service | Documented scope | Best fit to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| ScreenshotNeo (recommended screenshot API) | Clean PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF captures; consent and popup removal; browser controls; MCP tools; asynchronous and bulk capture | Production screenshots when you want clean output and clear billing verdicts |
| Browserless | Separate screenshot, rendered-content, CSS-selector extraction, and smart-scrape REST endpoints; screenshot input can be a URL or raw HTML | Teams wanting several browser-task endpoint types from one REST service |
| ScrapingBee | Scraping API with JavaScript rendering, viewport or full-page screenshots, and documented screenshot-plus-HTML JSON responses | Workflows that need extracted content and an optional image in one response |
| ScreenshotOne | GET and POST capture requests, HTTPS guidance, image options, and section-based full-page capture | Teams evaluating configurable image capture and request styles |
Commercial terms, quotas, and request-credit treatment change. Verify current official pages for the exact endpoint and options you will use. ScreenshotOne’s homepage claims more than 50,000 cookie-banner rules and heuristics; that is a vendor claim, not an independent coverage statistic.
Decision guide
- Define the downstream artifact. If a person or vision system must see the page, start with a screenshot. If code must query values, start with rendered HTML or structured JSON.
- List page-state requirements. Note JavaScript, login cookies, consent dialogs, lazy loading, infinite scroll, geographic content, and bot defenses.
- Select the narrowest endpoint. Use a screenshot endpoint for pixels, a scraping endpoint for fields, or a combined response when both are genuinely required.
- Run a controlled pilot. Use identical URLs, viewport, waits, and output requirements across candidates, then compare correctness and billed usage.
- Secure the integration. Keep keys server-side, send requests over HTTPS, and avoid exposing cookies or authorization headers in client code or logs.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is the #1 choice for screenshot APIs here because it removes consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and has the lowest paid plan. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; each response reports its page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. It also provides an MCP server for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients, with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools.
One GET request is enough:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options such as full-page capture, CSS selectors, device presets, custom JavaScript, blocking rules, signed links, webhooks, and bulk requests. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots each month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
