Windows 11 may appear to have a broken screen saver when the display is actually turning off, the PC is sleeping or locking, or an application or device is preventing idle behavior. These are separate features. Start by testing the built-in Blank screen saver with a one-minute delay and temporarily preventing display timeout and sleep.
- Screen saver: Shows an animation, blank screen, or photo slideshow after inactivity.
- Screen timeout: Turns the display off.
- Sleep: Puts the PC into a low-power state.
- Lock/sign-in: Requires authentication after another action or security policy.
1. Confirm that the screen saver is enabled
In Windows 11, screen-saver settings are in the Lock screen area.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Personalization > Lock screen.
- Under Related settings, select Screen saver.
- Choose a screen saver other than (None).
- Set Wait to the desired number of idle minutes.
- Select Preview to test it, then select Apply and OK.
If Preview works, the selected screen saver can start manually; the timer, power settings, or background activity may be the issue. You can enable On resume, display logon screen after the basic test works. Clear it temporarily while troubleshooting so a sign-in prompt does not obscure the result.

2. Test the built-in Blank screen saver
A custom photo slideshow or downloaded .scr file can fail independently of the Windows screen-saver timer. Test the basic feature with a built-in option.
- Open Settings > Personalization > Lock screen > Screen saver.
- Choose Blank, if it is listed.
- Set Wait to 1 minute.
- Temporarily clear On resume, display logon screen.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Leave the PC untouched for slightly longer than one minute.
If Blank works, the timer and screen-saver mechanism are functioning. The original saver may have a damaged configuration, an unavailable image folder, or an incompatible executable. The built-in Photos and 3D Text screen savers have configurable options; other built-in savers may have few or none.
3. Stop the display timeout from hiding the screen saver
The display can turn off before the screen-saver Wait period expires. For example, a shorter display timeout can prevent a longer screen saver from becoming visible.
- Open Start > Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Expand Screen and sleep. Some newer Windows 11 releases label the page Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Temporarily set display-off options to Never, or make them substantially longer than the screen-saver delay.
- Temporarily set sleep options to Never as well.
- Test the screen saver again.

4. Check for applications preventing idle behavior
Applications and drivers can issue power requests that prevent Windows from automatically turning off the display or entering sleep. This can make the screen saver appear unreliable. Open Terminal, Command Prompt, or PowerShell and run powercfg /requests.
Review entries under categories such as DISPLAY, SYSTEM, AWAYMODE, and DRIVER. Close or exit the application named in the output, then test again. Common sources include:

Do not start with powercfg /requestsoverride. It changes Windows power behavior and can conceal the underlying problem. Identify the request first and use an override only when you understand its effect. See Microsoft’s powercfg documentation.
5. Disconnect devices that may reset the idle timer
A faulty or over-sensitive mouse, touchpad, controller, wireless receiver, drawing tablet, or other HID device can continuously report activity, resetting the inactivity countdown.

- Disconnect external USB mice, keyboards, controllers, drawing tablets, and wireless receivers.
- Disconnect USB hubs temporarily and connect essential devices directly to the PC.
- Wait for the configured interval without touching the built-in keyboard or touchpad.
- If the screen saver works, reconnect devices one at a time.
- When the problem returns, try another USB port or replace the offending device or receiver.
This test is especially useful when Preview works but the automatic timer never fires. Microsoft’s mouse and keyboard troubleshooting guidance also recommends testing USB devices, ports, and hubs.
6. Update or roll back the graphics driver
A screen saver that previews but freezes, flashes, displays incorrectly, or exits immediately may be affected by a graphics driver or incompatible display-related application.
Update the driver with Device Manager
- Open Start and search for Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
If the problem started after a driver update, open the adapter’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and choose Roll Back Driver if available. You can also obtain a stable driver from the PC or graphics-card manufacturer’s support site.
For a temporary display-driver reset, press Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B. The display may flicker and Windows may play a notification sound. Save work first; this shortcut is not a permanent driver fix. See Microsoft’s screen-flickering troubleshooting guidance.

7. Repair Windows system files
If the screen saver, display timeout, and sleep behavior are all failing, damaged Windows components may be involved. Run DISM first, followed by System File Checker.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and wait for it to finish.
When DISM reports that the operation completed successfully, run sfc /scannow. Keep the window open until SFC reaches Verification 100% complete. DISM runs first because it repairs the component store SFC uses as a repair source. See Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions.
If Windows Update cannot provide the required files, Microsoft documents this alternative command: DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:\RepairSource\Windows /LimitAccess. Replace C:\RepairSource\Windows with a valid Windows installation or repair source; do not use an arbitrary folder copied from another installation. See Microsoft’s repair-source guidance.
8. Check Group Policy on Pro and managed PCs
Group Policy can enable a screen saver without providing a usable timeout. Microsoft documents that if Enable screen saver is configured but Screen Saver timeout is not, the screen saver may not start.

- Press Windows logo key + R.
- Enter gpedit.msc and select OK.
- Go to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Control Panel > Personalization.

The timeout is measured in seconds and can range from 1 through 86,400 seconds; zero prevents the screen saver from starting. After changing policy, refresh it from an administrator Command Prompt with gpupdate /force. On a work or school PC, a domain administrator or mobile-device-management service may restore the original policy. Do not install unofficial gpedit packages on Windows Home.

To create an HTML report of policies applied to your account, run gpresult /h “%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\gpresult.html” /f. Open the generated file from the desktop and search for screen saver, Personalization, ScreenSaveActive, or ScreenSaveTimeOut. 9. Inspect the per-user registry values
Use the registry only after checking normal settings, applications, devices, drivers, and policy. Screen-saver settings are stored per user under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop.

To inspect the key, press Windows logo key + R, type regedit, select OK, and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop. For example, a 10-minute timeout is represented by ScreenSaveTimeOut = 600. ScreenSaveTimeOut may not exist by default. Microsoft documents the selected executable value in its SCRNSAVE.EXE reference.
Also check the policy path HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Control Panel\Desktop. Values there can override ordinary user settings, and domain or MDM policy can reapply them at sign-in or during policy refresh. Back up the relevant key before making changes, and do not import registry fix files from untrusted websites.

If Preview fails, the saver closes immediately, or a custom saver no longer starts, reset the selection.
- Open Settings > Personalization > Lock screen > Screen saver.
- Select (None), then select Apply.
- Open the dialog again.
- Select Blank, Photos, or another built-in saver.
- Set Wait again, then select Apply and OK.
For a custom .scr file, confirm that it still exists and came from a trusted source. If Group Policy forces a screen saver whose executable is missing or invalid, Windows cannot run it.

Fastest diagnostic order
- Select Blank, set Wait to one minute, and test.
- Temporarily set display and sleep timers under System > Power & battery > Screen and sleep to Never.
- Disconnect external mice, controllers, receivers, hubs, and other input devices.
- Close media players, conferencing tools, remote-access software, games, overlays, and screen-sharing sessions.
- Run powercfg /requests.
- Update or roll back the graphics driver.
- Run DISM followed by SFC.
- Check Group Policy and the gpresult report on managed PCs and supported Windows editions.
- Inspect the per-user registry only after excluding other causes.
Once the built-in Blank saver works, restore your preferred saver and re-enable the lock-screen option if required.
What a screen saver does not do
Windows 11 has not removed screen savers; the feature remains available through Screen Saver Settings. A screen saver is not the same as display timeout or sleep, and it is not generally needed to protect a modern LCD or LED panel from CRT-era burn-in. Microsoft recommends sleep for energy savings. Use a screen saver for presentation, personalization, or a controlled blank screen; use sleep or display timeout when reducing power consumption is the priority.
FAQ
Why does my Windows 11 screen turn off instead of showing the screen saver?
The display timeout or sleep timer may be shorter than the screen-saver Wait value. Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen and sleep, then temporarily set display-off and sleep values to Never while testing.
How do I turn on the screen saver in Windows 11?
Open Settings > Personalization > Lock screen > Screen saver. Choose a saver other than None, set Wait, optionally enable On resume, display logon screen, and select Apply followed by OK.
Why does the screen-saver preview work but the automatic screen saver does not?
A device may be generating constant input, or an application or driver may be issuing a power request. Disconnect external input devices, close media and remote-access software, and run powercfg /requests.
Can Group Policy stop the Windows 11 screen saver?
Yes. Check User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Control Panel > Personalization. Enable screen saver must not be Disabled, and Screen saver timeout must have a nonzero value. Domain or MDM policy can also override local settings.
Is there a Windows 11 registry fix for a missing screen-saver timeout?
The per-user timeout is stored as ScreenSaveTimeOut under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop and is measured in seconds, but editing it is not always a fix. A policy value, domain Group Policy, or MDM can override the setting.
Are screen savers necessary for modern monitors?
Usually not. Modern LCD and LED displays do not require a screen saver to prevent CRT-style burn-in. Windows sleep uses less power, although a screen saver can still be useful for personalization or a controlled blank screen.
