To score more in Scopa, learn the capture priority first: a matching single card on the table must be taken before you can capture a combination that adds up to your card. Then keep track of the settebello, primiera, coin majority and total cards. A scopa is worth a point, but it is not always the best capture—and a sweep on the hand’s final play does not score.
How a Scopa hand works
A common two-player game uses a 40-card Italian-suited deck: coins, cups, clubs and swords. Deal three cards to each player and place four cards face up on the table. Players take turns playing one card from their hand. After both players have played all three cards, the dealer deals each player three more; the table cards stay in place. Continue until the deck is exhausted.
At the end of the hand, any cards left on the table go to the player or team that made the last capture. A standard 52-card deck can be adapted by removing the 8s, 9s and 10s. In international-card adaptations, diamonds commonly stand in for coins.
How to capture cards
- Take a matching single card first. If the card you play matches the value of a single table card, you must capture a matching single. If there are multiple copies of that value, choose which one.
- If there is no single match, capture a sum. You may take two or more table cards whose values add up to the value of your played card. If several combinations work, choose one.
- If nothing matches, leave your card on the table.
- You must capture when your play allows it. But you may choose a different card from your hand that does not capture, rather than play a card that would.
- A capture that clears the table is a scopa. The next player has no table card to take and must play a card to begin a new layout.
For example, if the table has an ace, 3, 4, 5 and 7, playing a 5 takes the single 5; you cannot choose the ace and 4 instead. Playing an 8, by contrast, can take any available combination of table cards totaling 8. Pagat’s Scopa rules explain this single-card priority.

What scores points at the end of a hand
Under the standard rules described by Pagat and the Winning Moves rulebook, tally these categories after each hand:
| Scoring category | Point | How it is awarded |
|---|---|---|
| Scopa | 1 per sweep | Each capture that clears the table scores one point, except a sweep on the hand’s final capture. |
| Most cards | 1 | Awarded to the player or team that captured the most cards. A tie scores no point. |
| Most coins | 1 | Awarded for capturing the most cards in the coins suit. A tie scores no point. In an adapted deck, count diamonds if they represent coins. |
| Settebello | 1 | Awarded for capturing the seven of coins, usually represented by the seven of diamonds in an adapted deck. |
| Primiera | 1 | Awarded to the player or team with the better primiera, provided each has at least one card in every suit. A tie scores no point. |
Games commonly use a cumulative target of 11 points, though players can agree on another target and rulesets may differ. Pagat’s rules, the Winning Moves rules and Sisal’s Italian rules describe rulesets with variations; agree on the target and scoring details before playing.

How primiera works
For each of the four suits, choose the highest primiera-value card you captured. Add those four values. You need at least one captured card in every suit to score primiera. The scale below is the common one used here; the numbers are for primiera, not for capture arithmetic.
| Card | Primiera value |
|---|---|
| Seven | 21 |
| Six | 18 |
| Ace | 16 |
| Five | 15 |
| Four | 14 |
| Three | 13 |
| Two | 12 |
| King, horse or queen, jack | 10 |
A seven counts as 7 when adding cards for a capture, but as 21 for primiera. Sevens and sixes are strong primiera cards; an ace is also valuable. The important comparison is suit by suit: a high-value card in a suit you do not yet have can complete your primiera, while another strong card in a suit you already cover may not improve it. Pagat notes that some regions use a different primiera scale, so confirm which scale applies to your game: Scopa variants and scoring differences.

Beginner strategy: what to prioritize
1. Look for the settebello
The seven of coins scores a point on its own. When a legal capture gives you a sensible chance to take it, consider doing so. If it is on the table, remember that an opponent may be able to capture it before you do. In a standard Scopone strategy analysis, the settebello is treated as one of the important cards to prioritize; this describes programmed play, not a guaranteed formula for winning. Read the Politecnico di Milano paper on Scopone strategies.
2. Build primiera across all four suits
Keep track of which suits you have captured and which still need coverage. A seven or six can be especially valuable, but only cards in all four suits let you score primiera. Take an opportunity to improve a missing suit into account alongside the card’s value in isolation.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
3. Count coins and cards
Most coins and most cards are separate scoring categories. Keep a running count of each as cards are captured, including the opponent’s visible captures. In a deck that substitutes diamonds for coins, count diamonds.
4. Compare a sweep with other captures
A scopa is worth one point, but clearing the table is not automatically the best choice. If a different legal play can capture the settebello, improve your primiera or secure more coins, compare those gains with the sweep. The Scopone strategy paper describes cases where a sweep need not be the priority if another capture is more valuable; it does not establish one universally best move for every Scopa position.

5. Avoid leaving an easy sweep
Before playing a card that cannot capture, look at the layout you will leave behind. If a likely card could take all the remaining table cards, you may be giving the next player a chance to score a scopa. Because you cannot see the opponent’s hand, treat this as risk assessment, not a prediction.
6. Treat the last capture differently
The last capture of the hand still collects its cards, but clearing the table on that play does not earn a scopa point. Do not give up a valuable card merely to make the final capture look like a sweep.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Agree on variations before the deal
Scopa has regional and published variations. Pagat documents different primiera scales and ace rules, including Asso Pigliatutto and Scopa d’Assi, which change what happens when an ace is played. The Winning Moves rulebook gives player-count-specific targets and says traditional Italian play deals and passes play to the right; treat that as the publisher’s ruleset rather than a universal direction of play. Before starting, agree on primiera scoring, ace behavior, player count, turn direction and the score needed to win. Pagat’s variants overview and the Winning Moves rulebook describe these differences.
