Molson Coors ran a dream-incubation promotion before Super Bowl LV; the available evidence does not show that it reliably made participants dream about beer or increased purchases. The underlying technique is real, but its commercial power remains unproven.
What does it mean to “inject” an ad into a dream?
The phrase is vivid, but “dream incubation” is more precise: presenting a cue before or during sleep in the hope that it will influence dream content. It does not mean placing a complete, controllable video advertisement inside a sleeper’s mind. A sound, image, smell, or spoken prompt may become a theme in a dream, but that is different from controlling the dream or making the person want the advertised product.
In a 19 November 2021 Aeon essay, sleep researchers Adam Haar Horowitz, Robert Stickgold, and Antonio Zadra warned that commercial uses of dream incubation were emerging. They also stressed the limits: “To be clear, we don’t think that sleep and dream science is sufficiently advanced at this point to reliably use TDI to influence consumer behaviour at scale.”
What did Molson Coors do?
Before Super Bowl LV in 2021, Molson Coors promoted an audio-and-video experience intended to associate Coors beer with positive dream imagery. The promotion offered participants a discount and a free 12-pack for referrals. Zayn Malik’s participation in an Instagram Live sleep event helped draw attention to it. These details establish that a company ran a promotion using dream-incubation language; they do not establish that participants reliably dreamed of beer or later bought more of it.

The researchers described the campaign in their 2021 Aeon essay and in the open letter “Advertising in Dreams is Coming: Now What?”, published 7 June 2021. The letter also cited marketing examples involving Xbox, PlayStation, and Burger King. Those examples show interest in reaching people through sleep-related experiences, not proof of a mature or effective advertising channel.
What experiments suggest—and what they do not
Dream themes can be cued in a lab setting
The Aeon essay describes Dormio, a research wearable system that uses sleep sensors, prompts, and timed awakenings to collect verbal reports near sleep onset. The authors report a study with 25 participants and 67 awakenings: all but one awakening produced a hypnagogic dream report, and 45 reports mentioned trees after participants received a tree prompt. This is evidence that a prompt can influence reported themes in an experimental setting. It is not evidence that an ordinary consumer campaign can precisely script dreams or reliably place a brand in them.

A reported change in behavior is not proof of advertising effectiveness
The same essay describes a sleep-cueing study in which adult smokers received targeted odor cues during sleep. The authors report that smoking fell by 30 percent over the following week and that most participants did not remember the intervention. That result, as reported in the essay, concerns a sleep cue and smoking behavior; it does not show that branded dream advertising reliably changes purchases. The essay’s authors said the cost effectiveness of large-scale sleep-related advertising was unclear and that reliable influence on consumer behavior at scale had not been established.
What did marketers and consumers say in 2021?
The Aeon authors reported results from the American Marketing Association New York’s 2021 Future of Marketing study. More than 400 US marketers participated, and 77 percent said they aimed to deploy dream technology for advertising within three years. That is a statement of intent made in 2021, not a measured deployment rate or a current forecast. The original survey instrument has not been independently verified here, so the figure should be read as the authors’ account of the study.

The essay authors also reported a survey of more than 500 consumers: 32 percent opposed advertisers using dream incubation, while about three in ten were unsure. These dated responses do not establish what the public thinks now.
Why do researchers object?
The concerns raised by the researchers are ethical as well as scientific. A sleeping person may not notice a cue, may not remember it, and may be unable to give meaningful consent while asleep. The researchers also raised the possibility of interference with memory processing and the prospect that sleep data could be commercially collected or used for targeting. These are risks and scenarios discussed by the authors, not evidence that such data practices are already widespread.

In the 2021 open letter, Stickgold, Zadra, and Haar called the practice “not some fun gimmick, but a slippery slope with real consequences.” That is the authors’ warning and position, not a settled finding that every use of sleep cues causes harm.

The 2021 sources establish that companies experimented with sleep-themed promotions and that researchers discussed possible commercial uses of dream incubation. They do not establish the scale of current deployment. They also do not settle whether dream advertising is legal or illegal in any jurisdiction. A specific legal answer requires current, jurisdiction-specific information that these sources do not provide.

The practical distinction is between an experimental cue that may influence a dream theme and an advertising system proven to reach sleepers, control dream content, or change buying behavior. The first has been explored in research and promotions; the latter has not been demonstrated by the evidence cited above.
