Scientists have built a robot that can sweat heavily—but ANDI is not a general-purpose humanoid. It is a specialized thermal manikin, custom-built for Arizona State University (ASU), that reproduces selected human heat responses so researchers can study heat stress in conditions too dangerous to test directly on people.
What is ANDI?
ANDI is a human-shaped thermal manikin made by Thermetrics for ASU researchers. The familiar word “robot” fits its mechanical form, but “research manikin” better describes its role: it is an instrument for measuring heat transfer and modeling how a body may respond, not a machine shown to experience heat as a person does.
ASU’s May 25, 2023 account described ANDI as the first thermal manikin that could be used outdoors. That is ASU’s dated claim, not a current independent comparison of every manikin available. Thermetrics’ product page lists ANDI as a full-body testing manikin with 35 independent thermal zones, an integrated volumetric sweating system, and active cooling.
How does the sweating robot work?
ANDI has 35 individually controlled surface areas, temperature and heat-flux sensors, and pores that bead sweat. Researchers can make it generate heat, sweat, shiver, walk, and breathe. Its internal channels circulate cool water through the manikin, a feature ASU identified as enabling outdoor operation in extreme heat.

These components let researchers examine heat coming from sunlight, the ground, and surrounding air, as well as the manikin’s modeled thermal response. The sensors and controlled zones provide measurements; the simulated behaviors do not establish that ANDI has the full physiology or subjective experience of a human body.
Why are researchers using ANDI?
Extreme-heat studies can put people at serious risk. ASU associate professor and co-investigator Jenni Vanos explained the constraint: “You can’t put humans in dangerous extreme heat situations and test what would happen.” A manikin allows researchers to investigate some heat exposures under controlled conditions without subjecting a human participant to the same danger.

ASU describes using ANDI both outdoors and with a heat chamber that can control wind, temperature up to 140°F, and solar radiation. Researchers can input thermal regulation models representing variations such as age, body size, and health conditions. These are modeled characteristics, not proof that the manikin reproduces every individual’s response.
What does ANDI measure alongside MaRTy?
ASU’s team pairs ANDI with MaRTy, a biometeorological heat robot. MaRTy measures environmental conditions; ANDI helps researchers examine how a modeled body responds to those conditions. Together, the systems help separate the surrounding heat exposure from the thermal response being studied.

Could ANDI lead to better heat protection?
ASU researchers hope the work can inform heat-mitigation ideas, including cooling clothes and backpack exoskeletons. Those are prospective applications, not products endorsed by the study or interventions proven by the cited account to prevent heat illness. The ASU report does not establish that a particular garment or device has already been shown to protect people.
Principal investigator and ASU associate professor Konrad Rykaczewski described the aim as developing a quantitative understanding of heat’s effects so researchers can design responses. That makes ANDI a research platform: it can help investigate ideas, but a modeled test alone does not demonstrate a health benefit in people.

Why did the story mention Arizona heat deaths?
ASU’s May 25, 2023 article reported 425 heat-related fatalities in Maricopa County in 2022, a 25% increase from the previous year. That is a location- and year-specific figure cited to explain the research’s urgency; it should not be read as a current annual count or as a result produced by ANDI.

- It can: reproduce selected thermal behaviors and provide sensor measurements in controlled and outdoor research settings.
- It can: help researchers explore how environmental conditions and selected modeled body characteristics affect thermal response.
- It cannot establish by itself: how every person will respond, whether a specific cooling intervention works in real-world use, or that a machine experiences heat as a human does.
ASU’s account supplies the project description and research goals; Thermetrics’ page supplies manufacturer-listed features, not an independent performance evaluation. The available accounts do not provide an independent head-to-head test against other manikins or a quantified result showing that a specific intervention reduces heat illness.
