That is a useful shorthand, not a strict dividing line: many institutions combine both approaches, so the venue’s actual exhibits, collections, and programs matter more than its name.
How science museums and science centers traditionally differ
| Typical emphasis | Science museum | Science center |
|---|---|---|
| Exhibits and objects | Often displays collections such as fossils, minerals, specimens, or scientific and technological artifacts; some institutions also preserve collections or conduct research. | Often features interactive exhibits and activities that invite visitors to manipulate, test, and explore scientific phenomena. |
| Visitor experience | May include observation and interpretation of objects, alongside hands-on exhibits and other activities. | May include hands-on exploration, demonstrations, and facilitated activities. |
These are tendencies, not rules. A science museum can be highly interactive, and a science center can hold collections. The Association of Science and Technology Centers (ASTC) describes science museums and science centers together as places for informal learning where people can discover, explore, and test ideas across science, technology, engineering, mathematics, health, and the environment. Both also contribute to public engagement with science in their communities.
Why the labels developed
Science centers became a recognizable movement with a focus on experiences and scientific phenomena rather than primarily on historic artifacts. ASTC traces a new generation of centers to the 1960s; San Francisco’s Exploratorium, which opened in 1969, became an influential example of exploratory, hands-on exhibits.
The professional definition of a museum broadened as well. ASTC’s historical account says the American Association of Museums—now the American Alliance of Museums—revised its definition in 1975 to remove the requirement that a museum have collections. That change made science centers eligible for accreditation and helps explain why a center can be a museum in the broader professional sense without being collection-led.

The distinction is not universal. The National Museum of Australia notes that it depends partly on whether a museum is understood mainly as a collection of objects or more broadly as a place for ideas and learning. Institutions may mix object-based displays, thematic storytelling, and immersive, interactive experiences.
Why the same institution may use both terms
The Sciencenter in Ithaca, New York, describes itself as a “hands-on science museum.” Its offerings include interactive exhibits, live animals, field trips, camps, and traveling exhibitions. That example shows how one institution can combine a museum label with the experience often associated with a science center; it does not establish a rule for all venues.

For another example of overlap, the National Museum of Australia’s account notes that the Powerhouse Museum included both traditional exhibits and exhibits more characteristic of science centers. The mix of collections, hands-on experiences, and programs is often more useful to know than the institution’s chosen label.
