To see which maintenance windows apply to one Configuration Manager client, start with the built-in Maintenance windows available to a specified client report. Use a custom SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) report when you need a collection-wide view, a tailored layout, or joins to other operational data. Use PowerShell when you need to retrieve collection window data for an extract or script-driven workflow.

Choose the reporting method that matches your scope

Method Scope and output Best fit What you maintain
Built-in client report Windows applicable to one specified client; on-demand report Answering “Which maintenance windows apply to this device?” Microsoft’s stock report; confirm it is present in your site’s report catalog
Custom SSRS report Tailored report, potentially covering collections or combining window data with other operational data When the built-in client-specific view does not meet the required scope or layout Your report design and any SQL or model dependencies
PowerShell extraction Collection maintenance-window retrieval through a cmdlet Automated or script-driven collection data workflows Your script, formatting, scope checks, and output handling

Run the built-in report for a specific client

Microsoft’s report catalog lists Maintenance windows available to a specified client, which displays the windows applicable to a chosen client. Find it in the installed Configuration Manager console’s reporting catalog and run it for the target device. The exact folder location and availability can depend on the site and installed build, so search the catalog by the report name if it is not immediately visible. Microsoft documents the report in its List of reports.

Configuration Manager reports run through SQL Server Reporting Services and retrieve report data from the Configuration Manager site database. The site needs a reporting services point configured; administrators also need the appropriate site read and report-run rights to run reports. See Microsoft’s guidance on configuring reporting and report operations and maintenance.

Build a custom report when the built-in view is too narrow

Choose a custom report when the request is broader than one client, requires a particular presentation, or needs maintenance-window information joined with other operational data. Configuration Manager supports SQL-based and model-based reports created through the console and Report Builder.

  1. Define the scope and output. Decide whether the report should cover one client, a collection, or multiple collections, and specify the fields and layout users need.
  2. Check reporting access. Confirm the reporting services point is configured and that you have permissions to create or modify reports. Running reports and authoring them require different rights.
  3. Use supported reporting data. For a SQL-based report, use supported Configuration Manager reporting views, whose names begin with v_. Do not query site database tables directly for a report.
  4. Verify the installed view definitions. The available field names and configuration details depend on the site environment. Check the supported views in the target installation rather than assuming a column name.
  5. Validate the output against the intended devices. Check collection membership, window types, and recurrence, then confirm the report’s results match the requested client or collection scope.

Microsoft explains the SSRS reporting model, permissions, and supported views in its reporting operations documentation. It does not identify one custom report design as the right choice for every site.

Use PowerShell for collection-based retrieval

The ConfigurationManager PowerShell module includes Get-CMMaintenanceWindow, a cmdlet for retrieving maintenance windows for a collection. It can be a useful starting point for a data extraction or automation workflow, but the cmdlet reference does not make a finished, formatted client report for you. Confirm that the collection scope and output meet your requirement before treating the result as a report. See Microsoft’s Get-CMMaintenanceWindow reference.

Interpret reported windows in deployment context

Maintenance windows are configured on device collections and control when supported Configuration Manager client deployment activity can run. They are different from service windows for site-server maintenance. Microsoft describes their purpose as: “Use maintenance windows to define when Configuration Manager can run impacting tasks on devices.” See Use maintenance windows.

Window schedule and duration

A window includes an effective date, start and end times, and recurrence. Its duration must be less than 24 hours. To cover a full day on a weekend, configure separate daily windows rather than one 24-hour window.

Supported deployment activity

Maintenance windows can govern supported activity for applications and packages, software updates, compliance settings, operating-system deployments, and custom task sequences. A report lists configuration; it does not by itself show whether a particular deployment can finish within an available window.

Software updates and deployment run time

Software updates normally run only during Software Update windows when multiple window types apply. A documented client setting can allow All deployments windows to be used when a Software Update window is available. Also check a deployment’s maximum allowed run time: if it does not fit in an available window, the deployment can be deferred to a later window. These rules matter when using a report to explain timing, not merely to inventory configured windows. Microsoft documents the behavior and setting in its maintenance-window guidance.
