Back up Xbox screenshots and clips from the console’s Captures app before they are removed. Xbox says captures stored on the Xbox network are deleted after 90 days. Open My games & apps > See all > Apps > Captures, check for captures marked for upcoming deletion, then use the app’s backup options to copy the files you want to OneDrive or an external storage device. Finally, confirm the copies open or play from their destination; selecting an upload option alone does not prove that every file arrived.
The 90-day policy applies to captures stored on the Xbox network. It does not mean Xbox deletes separate copies already saved to OneDrive, a PC, or an external drive. Xbox announced the retention period on September 27, 2023.
What happens to Xbox captures after 90 days?
Xbox’s published rule is that game captures stored on the Xbox network are deleted after 90 days. Xbox announced the policy in September 2023. The period concerns the network-stored version; it is not a universal expiry date for copies you have already saved elsewhere.

Do not assume that every file in your Captures app is about to disappear on the same date. Instead, inspect the console’s Xbox-network captures and look for the app’s upcoming-deletion marking. The console’s current warning is the useful guide to which files it identifies as at risk. If a screenshot or clip matters, save it promptly rather than waiting for a particular date. Xbox’s announcement gives the retention period but does not establish one universal purge date for every owner’s files or explain a date-calculation method that readers can use to predict an individual deletion.

Xbox’s announcement identifies OneDrive and an external storage device as backup destinations, and says the Captures app can manage and bulk-back up existing captures. It also supports automatic OneDrive backup for future captures. These options create a way to preserve copies; they should not be treated as proof that an upload succeeded or that the network original was removed.
The key distinction is where a file is stored. A capture in Xbox network storage is covered by the announced retention policy. A copy that has already been saved independently—to your own OneDrive account or an external device, for example—is not the same network-stored file. The announcement does not say that the 90-day policy deletes those independent copies.
How do I find Xbox screenshots and clips that may be deleted?
Open the Captures app on the Xbox console where you want to check the files. Xbox gives this navigation path:
Recommended Free Tools
- Press the Xbox button on the controller.
- Open My games & apps.
- Select See all.
- Open Apps, then select Captures.
- Review the captures stored on the Xbox network and note any upcoming-deletion marking.
Prioritize irreplaceable clips and screenshots first. The app is also the place to manage existing captures and start the supported backup flow. Menu wording can change over time, so if a label differs on your console, follow its current Captures prompts rather than relying on a label from an older guide.
Before copying, make a quick inventory of what you actually want to keep. Look for one-of-a-kind moments, clips that would be difficult to recreate, or screenshots you may need later. This helps you choose which files to handle first if you do not plan to copy everything. The Xbox announcement supports bulk backup, but it does not specify an archive size or a typical transfer time; avoid assuming that a large collection will finish within a particular period.
Keep the task focused on network-stored captures that the console marks as at risk. If you are unsure whether a particular file has another copy, do not assume that selecting it in Captures means it is already safe somewhere else. Treat it as unbacked-up until you can locate and open or play a copy at the destination you intend to keep.
How do I back up existing Xbox captures to OneDrive?
Use the Captures app’s management or bulk-backup prompts to select OneDrive as the destination for the captures you want to keep. Xbox identifies OneDrive as a supported destination for existing captures as well as an option for automatic backups of future captures.
- In Captures, select the option for managing or backing up captures.
- Choose the existing screenshots and clips you want to preserve. Use the bulk-backup option if you want to handle multiple captures together.
- Choose OneDrive as the destination and follow the console’s prompts. Make sure you are using the OneDrive account where you expect to find the files later.
- After the transfer, sign in to that OneDrive account and check for the files you selected.
- Open important screenshots and play key clips from OneDrive. If a file is missing or will not open, do not count it as a safe backup; resolve the transfer issue or copy it to another destination.
The exact prompts may vary, so use the current options shown on your console rather than relying on a button name from an older walkthrough. The supported flow is the important part: select the existing captures, choose OneDrive, follow the console’s instructions, then verify the destination. Do not assume a successful-looking selection screen is a receipt for every file.

Check available OneDrive space. Xbox announced a low-space notification during capture uploads. That warning matters because choosing an upload destination is only an attempted transfer, not confirmation that every file reached the account. If you see a space warning or cannot find an expected file, verify the account and the upload status, then free space or use an external drive as another destination. See Xbox’s April 2024 update announcement for the documented notification.
OneDrive is a good fit if you want a cloud copy associated with your own account and prefer less manual handling for future captures. The practical trade-off is that the copy depends on the intended account and available space. Check both before you rely on the archive. If you use more than one Microsoft account, take particular care to check the account the console upload used rather than searching a different account and concluding that the file is missing.
Can I copy Xbox screenshots and clips to an external drive?
Yes. Xbox names an external storage device as a destination for backing up existing captures through the Captures app. This is a practical option if you want a physical copy you can keep offline or if you do not want to rely on a cloud upload.
- Connect an external storage device to the console.
- Open My games & apps > See all > Apps > Captures.
- Use the Captures app’s management or backup prompts to select files and choose external storage as the destination.
- Follow the console’s on-screen instructions. If the device is not accepted or the expected option is unavailable, follow the current console prompt rather than assuming a drive requirement from an unrelated Xbox feature.
- Check the destination and open the copied screenshots; play the important clips to confirm they are usable.
The available source information does not establish the current filesystem, minimum capacity, connection speed, or exact drive requirements for copying captures. Requirements for installing or expanding Xbox game storage are not necessarily the same as requirements for exporting capture files. Do not assume that a particular game-storage expansion card is a confirmed capture-export drive. Xbox’s public announcement supports the category—an external storage device—but does not endorse a specific model or establish compatibility specifications for every drive.
If you are buying a drive specifically for this purpose, first check the console’s current prompts or Xbox support information for the capture-copy requirements. Avoid purchasing based only on a drive’s game-installation specifications. A general external USB storage drive is the relevant product category to investigate, not a promise that every model or configuration will work for capture copying.
External storage can be useful when you want to hold a separate physical copy offline. Its trade-off is that you need to keep track of the device and confirm that the files copied correctly. A drive that is connected to the console is not automatically a verified backup: inspect the destination and test representative files, especially the clips you would most regret losing.
How can I make future Xbox captures back up automatically?
Xbox supports automatic OneDrive backups for future captures. Turning on the option helps reduce the need to manually export new files, but it does not copy older captures retroactively. Back up and verify any existing files you want to retain separately.
An Xbox Insider release note listed this path: Settings > Preferences > Capture & share > Automatic uploads. Treat that as historical menu guidance, not a guarantee that every console’s 2026 interface uses identical labels. Open your console’s current Settings and Capture & share options, enable automatic OneDrive uploads if available, and follow the on-screen account prompts.

After enabling it, make a new capture and check the intended OneDrive account for the file. This gives you a practical confirmation that the setting is connected to the account you expect and that the upload appears there. Keep an eye out for OneDrive space warnings, since automatic upload does not remove the need to confirm that important files arrived.
Think of automatic upload as a forward-looking convenience, not a substitute for an archive check. It is useful for new captures once configured, but it does not tell you whether older Xbox-network captures have already been copied. If you turn it on while working through an existing backlog, complete the existing-capture backup separately and verify both the old files and a new test capture.
Which backup destination should I choose?
Both OneDrive and an external storage device are Xbox-supported destinations for existing captures. Choose based on where you want the copy and how you plan to check it.

Confirm the account and available space, then check that the files appear.
- Choose external storage if you want a physical copy you can hold onto offline. Confirm that your console accepts the device for capture copying and verify the copied files.
- For especially important captures, consider two independent verified copies. For example, keep a cloud copy and a separate physical copy. This is general backup practice, not an Xbox requirement.
There is no universally better destination for every player. OneDrive reduces the need to keep a single physical drive nearby, but you must be sure you used the right account and have room for the uploads. External storage provides a separate physical archive, but you must maintain the device and confirm the console accepts it for capture copying. In either case, the deciding test is not which option you selected; it is whether the important files can be found and used afterward.
If a capture is especially valuable, keeping two independent verified copies reduces reliance on just one destination. For example, you might retain one copy in OneDrive and another on an external device. This is a sensible backup habit rather than an Xbox-mandated setup. Do not count two copies as independent if you have not checked that each one exists and works.
Whichever route you take, distinguish the Xbox-network original from the saved copy. Xbox’s 90-day announcement names Xbox network storage; it does not say that independently saved OneDrive or USB copies are deleted by that policy.
How should I verify a backup?
Verification closes the gap between starting a copy and knowing it is usable. Once the Captures app’s transfer flow is complete, inspect the actual destination rather than relying only on a selection or upload screen.

For OneDrive, sign in to the account you selected. For external storage, inspect the drive after the console’s copy flow.
- Look for the files you chose. Compare a few important captures against the items you selected. If one is missing, do not presume that the rest of the batch arrived.
- Open and play representative files. Open screenshots and play the clips you care about most. A visible filename alone does not confirm that a file can be used.
- Resolve warnings before relying on the copy. A low-OneDrive-space notification is a reason to check the results, not something to dismiss because an upload was started.
- Keep a second copy for irreplaceable files if practical. Verify that copy separately too.
This check does not require a special Xbox verification feature. It is a practical way to avoid discovering a missing or unusable file only after relying on it. Xbox documented a low-OneDrive-space notification during capture uploads, which is another reason to treat an attempted transfer and a confirmed copy as different things.

Why might a backup be missing or incomplete?
A backup destination being selected is not the same as a verified copy. Check the most likely causes before relying on a file:
- The OneDrive account is not the one you expected. Confirm which account was used on the console, then inspect that account’s files.
- OneDrive space is low. Xbox has documented a low-space notification during capture uploads. Check for the warning and whether the specific files arrived before assuming the transfer completed.
- The external device was not accepted or the copy did not complete. Follow the console’s current prompts and check the destination. Do not apply game-installation drive requirements to capture exports without confirmation.
- You enabled automatic backup but expected older captures to appear. Automatic OneDrive backup is for future captures; use the Captures app’s existing-capture backup flow for older files.
- You are looking for a PC-local recording in the console’s network captures. Xbox describes Game Bar captures made for a game as stored locally on the PC. Their original files are a separate case and should not be handled as though they were Xbox-network captures.
If a selected capture is not at the destination, pause before repeating the whole process blindly. Confirm that you are checking the correct account or physical device, look for any warning shown during the transfer, and use the console’s current prompts to retry or choose the other supported destination. Then verify the file itself. The published information does not provide a universal fix for every failed transfer, so avoid assuming a particular cause or promising that a retry will recover a file.
Do PC Game Bar recordings follow the same 90-day rule?
No. Xbox describes captures made through Game Bar for a game as locally stored on the PC. The 90-day retention announcement is about captures stored on the Xbox network, so do not assume it applies to those PC-local originals.

Keeping the two cases separate prevents you from searching the console’s network collection for an original that is stored on your computer.

Xbox’s announcement describes the 90-day deletion policy but does not establish a recovery method after a network capture is removed. If you already saved another copy to OneDrive or external storage, check that destination. Otherwise, do not count on being able to recover the network copy. The dependable approach is to identify the files before the console marks them for deletion, back them up, and confirm that the copies work while the originals are still available.
How we know what the 90-day rule covers
Xbox’s September 27, 2023 Xbox Wire announcement states: “Game captures stored on the Xbox network will be deleted after 90 days.” The statement was published by Jonathan Hildebrandt, Principal Group Product Manager, Xbox Experiences. The scope is specific: captures stored on the Xbox network. The announcement also points readers to the Captures app to inspect network captures and describes OneDrive and external storage as backup destinations.
Later, Xbox’s April 2024 update announcement documented a low-OneDrive-space notification during capture uploads. Together, those details support two practical habits: check the console’s own upcoming-deletion indication, and verify important copies at their destination instead of assuming an attempted upload is complete. The retention period is a published policy, not a reported measurement of how often people lose files or how long a particular upload takes.

Can I use the Xbox mobile app to download all my captures?
Current mobile-app save steps and bulk-download support are not verified here. For a dependable backup route, use the console’s Captures app and verify the destination.
Does turning on automatic OneDrive backup save my old captures too?
No; the automatic-upload option is described for future captures. Use the Captures app’s management or bulk-backup flow for existing files you want to preserve.
Does Xbox delete the copy I already saved to USB or OneDrive?
The published 90-day policy names captures stored on the Xbox network. It does not say that Xbox deletes separate copies stored in your own OneDrive account or on external storage.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How do I know which captures are at risk?
Open the console’s Captures app and review Xbox-network captures for an upcoming-deletion marking. Use the console’s current warning rather than guessing a universal deletion date.
Does Xbox recommend a particular USB drive or minimum capacity for capture backups?
The Xbox announcement names an external storage device but does not establish a specific model, filesystem, minimum capacity, connection speed, or complete compatibility requirements for capture copying. Follow current console prompts or Xbox support information before buying a drive for this purpose.
If my OneDrive upload started, can I assume the backup is complete?
No. Check the intended OneDrive account for the selected files, open screenshots, and play important clips. Xbox has documented a low-space notification during capture uploads, so treat the destination check as part of the backup.
Do Game Bar captures on PC need to be exported from the Xbox Captures app?
No. Xbox describes Game Bar captures made for a game as stored locally on the PC. Preserve those originals through the PC’s own file-management and backup options rather than treating them as Xbox-network captures.
The Bottom Line
Check the Captures app now, back up at-risk Xbox-network files to OneDrive or an external storage device, and verify the copies. Xbox’s 90-day rule applies to network-stored captures; automatic OneDrive backup helps with future captures but does not replace backing up older files.
