PDFCrowd WebSave lets a website owner add a button that turns a web page into a downloadable PDF. If you are visiting a site, you generally cannot add this capability yourself: the site must have installed WebSave. If you maintain the site, add a button with the required key and load the WebSave script. Choose URL mode for public pages; choose content mode when the PDF must use the page already open in the visitor’s browser, such as a logged-in view or a form.
What WebSave does—and who can use it
PDFCrowd describes WebSave as “a JavaScript integration for adding a PDF download button to a website.” It is intended for website operators who can edit the site’s HTML and JavaScript, not as a general browser command available on any page. A visitor can use the button only on a site where its owner has installed and configured WebSave. See the PDFCrowd WebSave as PDF documentation.
This guide refers to PDFCrowd’s website integration, not the separate mobile archiving app or Chrome extension that also use the name WebSave.
Choose URL mode or content mode
The main decision is whether PDFCrowd should fetch a public URL itself or convert the HTML currently loaded in the visitor’s browser.

Neither mode is a pixel-for-pixel screenshot of the visitor’s screen. WebSave creates a new PDF rendering from the page data available to the conversion process. Content or interactive state that is not represented in the submitted HTML is not automatically included.
Add a WebSave button to a website
The documentation’s quick start uses a button marked with pdfcrowd-websave, a required data-key, and a configuration object referenced by data-config. The optional pdfcrowd-websave-style class adds default styling, an icon, and a spinner; omit it if you want to supply your own button styling.

Configure how the PDF is delivered
Download is the default destination behavior. The technical reference also documents opening the PDF in the current tab or a new tab, filename configuration, and PDF settings such as page size and margins. Use the option names and accepted values in the current reference rather than assuming defaults match your site’s needs.

Initialize buttons inserted after page load
For buttons rendered later by React, Vue, Angular, Svelte, or another client-side application, initialize the button after it appears in the page with window.WebSave.initButton(...), following the argument format in the current documentation. A script that runs before the framework inserts the button cannot initialize an element that does not yet exist.
Prepare the page and check the PDF layout
Use a suitable mode for the page’s content
In URL mode, PDFCrowd fetches the URL independently. It will not see the visitor’s authentication session or current form input. Content mode is the documented choice when the current browser page contains logged-in, user-specific, modified, form, or single-page application content. Verify that required images, stylesheets, and other assets can also be reached during conversion; protected assets may need separate handling.

Account for JavaScript and incomplete data
WebSave converts available page content, not every interaction a user could perform. Records that have not been loaded, content that appears only after an interaction, and state absent from the HTML sent for conversion may be missing. For delayed JavaScript or AJAX content, PDFCrowd’s guide suggests content mode or a javascript_delay setting. Test with the actual page and data state you intend to export.
Set a viewport that matches the desired responsive layout
Viewport width can change the responsive breakpoint used in the PDF. The guide gives these common ranges: mobile, 375–414 pixels; tablet, 768–834 pixels; desktop, 1280–1920 pixels. Select and test a width appropriate to the content. A mobile-width rendering may wrap columns or hide elements that appear at desktop width.

Protect user-specific data in content mode
Content mode sends the current page’s HTML to PDFCrowd for conversion. Depending on the page, that HTML may contain form entries or user-specific material. Before enabling it, decide what data the page includes and whether sending it to the conversion service fits your site’s privacy and data-handling requirements. Do not assume content mode sends only public text.
Troubleshoot common WebSave failures
- The button or conversion does not work on an insecure page: the documentation says the page must be served over HTTPS. Serve the page securely and retry.
- A localhost URL cannot be converted: a server-side converter cannot reach your machine’s localhost. Test against a publicly reachable page or an appropriately accessible deployment.
- The key is rejected: check that the key is configured for the exact domain or subdomain serving the page. Host mismatches can cause failures; verify the key’s scope if using a subdomain.
- The PDF lacks login-only content or form values: URL mode makes a fresh fetch and does not inherit the visitor’s session or form entries. Use content mode if the current page HTML is the intended input, and account for the data it submits.
- Dynamic content is missing: confirm that the content has loaded into the HTML being converted. Consider content mode or the documented
javascript_delaysetting for delayed JavaScript/AJAX rendering. Unloaded records or interaction state absent from the HTML will not automatically appear. - The layout differs from the live page: this is a new rendering, not a screen capture. Check the viewport width, responsive breakpoint, page size, and margins, then test the output with representative content.
- A test PDF has a watermark: the demo key intentionally produces watermarked output. Configure a personal key for the site’s domain for production.
