Its 2026 half-year report does not name successor candidates or publish role-by-role succession slates. That internal talent strategy is separate from SAP’s previously announced plan for a future Supervisory Board chair transition.
What SAP’s new succession plan says
In its Half-Year Report 2026, SAP describes an evolving “proactive, intelligence-led succession management strategy.” The company says it is intended to safeguard business continuity, sustain a strong and varied leadership pipeline, and accelerate readiness for SAP’s most critical roles. The statement appears in the report’s Own Workforce / Talent Engine discussion, not as an announcement of a particular executive appointment. Read SAP’s Half-Year Report 2026.
The disclosure establishes the strategy’s broad aims, but not how it works in detail. SAP does not identify candidates, specify which positions have succession slates, or explain the selection criteria, intelligence inputs, review cadence, or oversight mechanics in the summary language reviewed.
Who is in line to succeed SAP’s leaders?
SAP has not named successors under the new internal strategy in the 2026 report. It would be inaccurate to treat the report as identifying a future CEO or other executive successor.

#1 Best Overall
SAP announced on May 5, 2025, that CEO Christian Klein’s contract would continue until April 2030 and CFO Dominik Asam’s until March 2028. SAP described the extensions as supporting Executive Board continuity and stability. Those contract terms provide tenure context; they do not identify either executive as a successor under the new strategy. SAP’s leadership page lists Klein as CEO. How the Talent Engine supports leadership readiness
SAP places succession management within its broader Talent Engine, which includes programs aimed at developing leadership capability and readiness. The half-year report describes the programs and timelines below as company plans; those schedules should not be read as proof that a program has already launched.
Rank #2
- Ignite: Uses cross-functional strategic projects to broaden exposure and build readiness for future leadership roles.
- Elevate: Planned to build enterprise leadership capabilities through immersive development and cross-functional exposure. SAP said it was to be piloted in the second quarter of 2027 and launched in the third quarter of 2027.
- Ascend: Described as building enterprise leaders with a general-management mindset and strengthening succession readiness.
- First Time Manager and Leading Manager: SAP planned pilots in the second quarter of 2026 and launches in the third quarter of 2026.
- Leading the AI Business: A program for executives.
SAP said that, unless otherwise stated, programs would be piloted by the end of 2026 and launched in 2027. The report’s stated dates are plans, not confirmation of completion. SAP Half-Year Report 2026.
Is René Obermann taking over as SAP chair?
That is a separate governance succession story, not the company-wide internal leadership strategy described in the 2026 report. In an April 11, 2025 letter, Supervisory Board chairman Pekka Ala-Pietilä said his mandate ended in 2026. The board intended to nominate René Obermann for election to the Supervisory Board in 2026, with the prospect that he would assume the chair in 2027; it also intended to ask shareholders to extend Ala-Pietilä’s term by a year to cover the transition.
The letter records plans as stated in April 2025. It does not, by itself, establish that the election or chair transition has since been completed. Read the 2025 letter from SAP’s Chairman.

What workforce figures do—and don’t—show
SAP’s report gives context about its workforce and leadership environment, but these figures do not demonstrate that the succession strategy has achieved results.
- Leadership Index: SAP reported an April 2026 result of 86%. The company introduced a revised index based on eight survey items and says the result is not directly comparable with the full-year 2025 score because of methodological changes.
- Employee turnover: SAP reported 5.6% at the end of the first half of 2026, compared with 8.2% at the end of the first half of 2025 and 8.2% at the end of 2025. SAP attributed the decrease to the impact of restructuring and workforce-transformation programs in 2025.
- Worldwide workforce: SAP reported 112,019 FTEs on June 30, 2026, compared with 108,929 on June 30, 2025, and 110,650 on December 31, 2025.
All three figures are from SAP’s Half-Year Report 2026.
