That figure describes accounts at risk—not a verified number of people whose information was stolen. Sanrio Digital said at the time that it had no indication personal information had been taken.
How many Hello Kitty accounts were affected?
Sanrio Digital told reporters that 3.3 million accounts were vulnerable. The figure was reported by The Irish Times/Reuters on December 22, 2015, and refers to accounts exposed to risk; it does not establish how many people were affected by confirmed theft. The Irish Times/Reuters report described SanrioTown.com as an online community for fans of Hello Kitty and other Sanrio characters.
What data was exposed?
The report said names, ages, and gender were among the information in the vulnerable data. It also said credit-card and other payment information was not included, and described passwords as securely encrypted. These details are the report’s account of the exposed data, not a complete inventory of every record. BBC News’ contemporaneous report covered these data categories.
Was any data stolen?
The available December 2015 reporting does not establish that information was stolen. Sanrio Digital’s statement at the time was: “at this time we have no indication that any personal information was stolen.” That was the company’s position, not proof that nobody accessed or copied the data. The reporting does not provide later forensic findings resolving whether access or misuse occurred.

How did the SanrioTown database become accessible?
Security researcher Chris Vickery told reporters that a database misconfiguration allowed public access without a password or authentication, and that the database had been exposed for nearly a month. The report did not independently test the vulnerability. Vickery described the risk this way: “It would have been extremely easy for a bad guy to take the data,” he said. “Extremely easy. Almost as easy as downloading a web page.” He was describing how accessible the database was, not claiming confirmed theft. The Register’s report attributed the exposure findings to Vickery.
What did Sanrio do, and which incident was this?
Sanrio Digital said it fixed the flaw after Vickery notified the company. Vickery said he had found holes on three servers. Separately, a Sanrio spokesperson said the Hong Kong fan website had no connection to a Sanrio shareholder database incident. The SanrioTown exposure and the shareholder database event should not be treated as the same breach.

What the 2015 report does—and does not—show
- Established in the report: Sanrio Digital’s spokesperson said 3.3 million accounts were vulnerable, and the company said it had no indication of theft at that time.
- Reported about the exposure: Names, ages, and gender were among the data categories; payment information was not included, and passwords were described as encrypted.
- Not established: A verified number of people whose information was stolen, whether anyone accessed or misused the data, later forensic conclusions, or the site’s current security.
The incident concerns SanrioTown.com accounts. It does not support saying that 3.3 million people had their data stolen.
