Sanity testing is commonly a quick, narrow check that a changed build or feature is coherent enough for deeper testing. Regression testing checks whether a change introduced or exposed defects in software areas that were not changed. They answer different questions, and “sanity testing” does not have one universally agreed scope.
What is the difference between sanity testing and regression testing?
| Comparison | Sanity testing | Regression testing |
|---|---|---|
| Main question | Does the changed build or area appear stable enough to continue testing? | Did the change break behavior in unchanged areas? |
| Scope | Usually narrow and quick, often focused on the change; teams define what it covers. | Selected existing tests, based on affected areas, business risk, or broader coverage. |
| Typical trigger | A new build, fix, or change needing an initial check. | A software, configuration, or data change that could affect existing behavior. |
| Purpose | Decide whether deeper testing is worthwhile. | Gather evidence that important existing behavior still works. |
| Execution | Often manual, but it can be automated. | Manual or automated. |
The regression-testing definition is more precise: ISTQB describes it as change-related testing to detect defects introduced or uncovered in unchanged areas of software. The cited ISTQB glossary does not define sanity testing as a corresponding formal category, so treat the table’s sanity-testing description as common usage rather than a universal standard. ISTQB glossary
When should you use sanity testing?
Use a sanity check when a new build or change needs a quick initial assessment before investing in more extensive testing. For example, after a small feature update, a team might verify that the changed screen opens and its primary interaction works before running a broader test plan.
Because teams use the term differently, document the check’s actual scope—for example, the build, feature, and key behaviors checked—instead of relying on the label alone. There is no universally required sequence or fixed number of sanity tests.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How should you choose regression-testing scope?
Regression testing does not inherently mean rerunning every test. Choose coverage according to the change’s likely effects, business risk, and available time. Microsoft’s guidance describes these approaches:
- Broad coverage: Test nearly all processes when wide assurance is important. This generally takes more time to run and maintain.
- Business-priority coverage: Protect the processes with the greatest business impact first.
- Change-focused coverage: Target areas affected by the code, configuration, or data change. This takes less effort, but does not establish that unrelated areas remain unaffected.
- Combined coverage: Protect critical processes while increasing test depth around changed features.
Microsoft recommends considering regression testing after changes to code, configuration, or data that could affect processes, and before a production change. The coverage strategy should reflect impact and risk, not simply the size of the change. Microsoft Learn: testing strategy and test types

Is sanity testing the same as smoke testing?
Not necessarily. The consulted primary sources do not establish a formal, universal distinction between sanity and smoke testing. Organizations use these labels inconsistently, so describe the purpose and scope of a test rather than assuming everyone interprets the terms alike.
Is sanity testing the same as confirmation testing?
No. Confirmation testing checks whether a specific reported defect was fixed, typically by repeating the steps that reproduced it. Regression testing checks for side effects in unchanged areas. A confirmation check may be narrow, but its purpose is specifically to verify the fix.

ISTQB notes that confirmation tests can be added to an automated regression test bed. A suite can therefore contain both kinds of test without making their purposes identical. ISTQB Test Automation Engineer syllabus
How does automation help with regression testing?
Automating repeated, high-value regression checks can make them faster to execute and more repeatable. Microsoft recommends expanding automation progressively, starting with key business processes and building coverage over time. Automation does not remove the need to choose relevant tests or maintain them as the application changes.
