Samsung announced on February 24, 2021, that it had begun mass production of the PM9A3 E1.S, an enterprise data-center SSD designed for hyperscale workloads and compliant with the OCP NVMe Cloud SSD Specification. The broader PM9A3 family includes E1.S, U.2, and M.2 variants, but the detailed capacities and performance figures below come from Samsung’s 2022 datasheet for the 2.5-inch U.2 model—not every PM9A3 configuration.
When did Samsung release the PM9A3?
Samsung’s Global Newsroom announcement is dated February 24, 2021. It says mass production had begun for the PM9A3 E1.S. That is the release milestone Samsung documented; it does not establish that every capacity, form factor, or configuration was available to all buyers on that date. Samsung’s launch announcement described the drive as intended for enterprise workloads and compliant with the Open Compute Project (OCP) NVMe Cloud SSD Specification.
Samsung also published launch-era performance comparisons for the E1.S. These are company-reported figures, not independent benchmark results:
- Samsung stated random-read performance of 750K IOPS, 40% higher than the PM983a.
- It stated random-write performance of 160K IOPS, 150% higher than the PM983a.
- It reported sequential-write power efficiency of 283 MB/s per watt, versus 188 MB/s per watt for the previous generation, describing the result as nearly 50% more energy efficient.
- Samsung estimated 1,484 GWh in energy savings in a scenario replacing all server HDDs launched in 2020 with PM9A3 4TB drives. The release compared that estimate with 1,412 GWh of electricity consumed by Seoul households during August 2020; it is a scenario estimate, not measured savings.
What is the PM9A3 designed for?
Samsung positions the PM9A3 as data-center and server storage for enterprise deployments. Its product brief names cloud infrastructure, content delivery networks (CDNs), shared hosting, NoSQL databases, and cloud data storage as use cases. These workloads may need high throughput or large numbers of simultaneous storage operations; the right drive still depends on the host system and workload.

The launch announcement described secure boot and anti-rollback mechanisms alongside encryption and authentication. Samsung’s product brief also lists TCG encryption management, end-to-end data protection, power-loss protection, and secure boot. These are enterprise-oriented features; check the exact drive SKU and system support when evaluating them for a deployment.
Which PM9A3 form factors are available?
Samsung’s product materials list E1.S, U.2, and M.2 versions. Form factor is not a cosmetic distinction: each determines the physical bay, connector, and system integration needed. The detailed figures in the following section are specifically for the 2.5-inch U.2 configuration in Samsung’s 2022 datasheet revision 1.0. Samsung’s PM9A3 product page presents family-level information and warns that specifications may change without notice.

Samsung PM9A3 U.2 specifications
The 2022 U.2 datasheet specifies PCIe Gen4 x4 and NVMe 1.4. Maximum figures vary by capacity:
| U.2 capacity | Sequential read, up to | Sequential write, up to | Random 4KB read at QD32, up to | Random 4KB write at QD32, up to | TBW |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 960GB | 6,500 MB/s | 1,500 MB/s | 580K IOPS | 70K IOPS | 1,752TB |
| 1.92TB | 6,800 MB/s | 2,700 MB/s | 850K IOPS | 130K IOPS | 3,504TB |
| 3.84TB | 6,900 MB/s | 4,100 MB/s | 1,000K IOPS | 180K IOPS | 7,008TB |
| 7.68TB | 6,700 MB/s | 4,000 MB/s | 1,100K IOPS | 200K IOPS | 14,016TB |
The sheet also lists a Samsung in-house controller, Samsung V-NAND TLC, a 2.0-million-hour MTBF, and a five-year limited warranty. These are specifications from that dated U.2 datasheet; they should not be assumed to apply unchanged to every form factor or current revision. Read the Samsung PM9A3 datasheet (revision 1.0).

How to interpret the performance figures
Samsung’s U.2 measurements used FIO 2.7 on a Linux Gen4 system running CentOS 7 with kernel 5.3.1. The stated setup used 4KB transfers, queue depth 32, four workers, and the full LBA span in a sustained state. The figures are ceilings from that test setup, not guaranteed results for every server or application; Samsung says actual performance varies with use conditions and environment.
Samsung’s current product page advertises up to 6,800 MB/s sequential read and 200,000 random-write IOPS for the family. Those headline figures should not be treated as a replacement for capacity- and form-factor-specific specifications: the product page and the older U.2 datasheet do not necessarily describe the same configuration. Samsung says its page performance data are based on internal standard benchmarks and that specifications may change without notice.

What to check before buying or deploying one
The PM9A3 is an enterprise drive, so a product name alone is not enough to establish fit. For a U.2 purchase, confirm the exact SKU and check the following against the server or storage platform documentation:
- That the system has a compatible U.2 bay and connector, supports NVMe, and provides the required power and cooling.
- That the selected capacity and form factor are qualified for the host, including any firmware and support requirements.
- That comparisons use matching form factors, capacities, transfer sizes, queue depths, and workload conditions. Samsung’s figures do not establish a fair head-to-head result against another SSD.
Do not assume a U.2 model will fit a typical consumer PC merely because both products use NVMe. Verify host compatibility for the exact drive before ordering.
