The Samsung Odyssey Ark 55-inch is compelling if you want a huge, curved screen for centered, immersive gaming. Its 4K resolution, up-to-165Hz refresh rate, Mini-LED backlighting and built-in smart features make it unusually versatile, but its scale comes with trade-offs: reviewers found text clarity only fair and viewing angles narrow, and the display demands substantial space. The exact port mix also differs between the 2022 first generation and the 2nd generation, so check the model before buying.

What the Odyssey Ark is good at

Immersive, single-user gaming

The Ark combines a 55-inch, 16:9 4K panel with a pronounced 1000R curve. Samsung specifies a maximum 165Hz refresh rate and 1ms gray-to-gray response time for the product family. The curved screen and large image are designed to draw a seated player into a game; Samsung also provides a rotatable Cockpit Mode. [Samsung’s 2022 launch announcement]

RTINGS found the first-generation model impressive for gaming, citing variable refresh rate (VRR) support, quick response and low input lag. Those are RTINGS’ findings on the first-generation display, not independent test results for every Ark generation. [RTINGS’ Odyssey Ark review]

Bright HDR presentation

Samsung lists Quantum Mini-LED local dimming for the 2nd-generation US model, along with 1,056 local-dimming zones, 600 cd/m² typical brightness and 95% typical DCI coverage. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. In its first-generation review, Engadget praised the display’s brightness and Quantum Dot color range. Smart-TV and multi-view features

Samsung lists smart-TV functions, Gaming Hub, Multi View and built-in speakers. The first-generation launch materials describe four-way horizontal Multi View and up to three views in Cockpit Mode. The 2nd-generation US page says Multi View can handle up to four inputs. These feature descriptions do not establish that every source combination, layout or gaming mode will work together; check the manual for the exact model and inputs you plan to use. Smart-feature availability can vary by region. [Samsung’s 2022 launch announcement] [Samsung’s 2nd-generation US product page]

Where the Ark is a poor fit

Close-up text and dense desktop work

A 55-inch screen does not automatically mean sharp, comfortable text at normal monitor distance. RTINGS describes text clarity on the first-generation Ark as only okay and attributes the issue to low pixel density. Tom’s Guide and Engadget also reported fuzzy or hard-to-read text in their first-generation reviews. That is a documented concern, not a guarantee that every user will find text unusable; it does make the Ark a less certain choice for prolonged close-up writing, coding or other dense desktop work than for gaming viewed from an appropriate distance. A narrow sweet spot for viewing

RTINGS and Engadget identify limited viewing angles, while Tom’s Guide notes that the curve creates one good viewing angle and can be impractical as a shared-room TV. The Ark is better suited to one person seated near the center than to several people watching from different positions. [RTINGS’ review] [Engadget’s review] [Tom’s Guide’s review]

A demanding footprint

The 2nd-generation US model measures 1174.8 × 1102.0 × 379.0 mm with its stand and weighs 41.50 lb with the stand, according to Samsung. The listed VESA pattern is 200 × 200. Check the dimensions and support requirements for the exact model you are considering; if mounting it, verify both the pattern and the mount’s load rating. [Samsung’s 2nd-generation US product page]

Check the generation before you buy

“Odyssey Ark 55-inch” can refer to more than one generation. The first-generation S55BG970 and 2nd-generation LS55CG970 family do not have the same port layout. Samsung’s published specifications also vary by market, so confirm the full model number and regional product page rather than relying on a listing that says only “Odyssey Ark.”

Model and source Published inputs What that means
First generation, S55BG970; Samsung’s 2022 launch announcement Four HDMI 2.1 inputs More HDMI 2.1 inputs than the 2nd-generation US model specification.
2nd generation, LS55CG970 family; Samsung US product page Two HDMI 2.1, one HDMI 2.0 and one DisplayPort 1.4 Adds a DisplayPort option for a PC, but has fewer HDMI 2.1 inputs than the first-generation launch specification.

For a PC, console and other connected devices, count the specific inputs each device needs and match them to the exact Ark version. The 2nd-generation claim of Multi View with up to four inputs is not the same as having four HDMI 2.1 ports. Is the Odyssey Ark worth its price?

It depends on the price you can actually buy it for and how much you value a very large, curved gaming display. Samsung announced the first generation at $3,499.99 in the US in 2022; that is a historical launch price, not a current market price. On October 4, 2026, Samsung’s US 2nd-generation product page displayed $2,699.99. That listing price is volatile, so check the live offer before deciding. [Samsung’s 2022 announcement] [Samsung’s 2nd-generation US product page]

The Ark makes most sense if immersive, centered gaming is your priority and you have room for its scale. If your main use is close-up productivity, shared viewing or fitting a screen into a limited workspace, its text, viewing-angle and footprint trade-offs deserve more weight. Compare actual current prices and specifications rather than assuming an older launch price or a different generation’s ports apply.
