You cannot legitimately bypass Google Factory Reset Protection (FRP) on a Samsung Galaxy without proving ownership. Enter the Google account previously used on the phone; on some software versions, the device may also offer the screen lock that was set before the reset. If neither works, contact the previous owner if the phone is second-hand, or ask an authorized Samsung service center for help if you are the owner. Repeating the reset will not remove the verification requirement.
Why a Samsung phone asks for a Google account after a reset
Factory Reset Protection is a theft-deterrent feature on Galaxy devices with Google Device Protection. After a reset through Recovery or another route, the phone may require the Google account previously used on it before setup can continue. Samsung describes the feature for Android 5.1 and later; the exact prompts and available verification options depend on the model and software version. Samsung’s US guidance on Google Device Protection explains the ownership checks.
A reset started from Recovery is different from preparing an accessible phone through Settings. Samsung advises using the Settings reset route when you can still access the device. A Recovery reset may trigger the prior-account check. Once the phone is stopped at FRP, resetting it again is not a way to clear that check.

What to try if you own the phone
- Sign in with the Google account used before the reset. Use the account’s current password. Samsung says the last Google account used before a Recovery-menu reset is required.
- Use the previous screen lock if the phone offers it. Depending on the Android version, this may be a prior PIN or password; Samsung Australia also describes a previous pattern as a possible option. It is not available on every device. See Samsung Australia’s reset guidance.
- Allow for a recent password change. Samsung US warns that after changing a Google password, there may be a 24-hour cooldown before the new password works on the reset phone. If the password was just changed, wait before treating a rejection as proof that the account is incorrect.
- Check which account was on the phone. If you have multiple Google accounts, Samsung suggests checking the Google device list to identify the account associated with the Galaxy.
- Contact Samsung if verification still fails. Samsung directs users who cannot recall the account or complete verification to an authorized service center. Its US guidance says to bring proof of purchase; this referral does not guarantee a particular result.
If you bought the Galaxy second-hand
Ask the seller or previous owner to resolve the account association using their own credentials, or request a return. Google Android Help Community guidance for second-hand devices likewise recommends obtaining help from the prior owner or returning the device. If the seller is unreachable, keep your receipt, listing, and communications, then ask Samsung support or an authorized service center what documentation is accepted in your market. Samsung’s support information does not establish that proof of purchase alone will remove FRP for a second-hand buyer.
Preparing an accessible phone for a reset
A factory data reset erases personal data stored on the phone. Back up important files first if the device is still accessible. Menu labels can vary by model and software version. Samsung’s current US instructions give this path:

- Open Settings > General management > Reset > Factory data reset.
- Review the data-loss warning and confirm only if you intend to erase the phone.
- If a Samsung account is signed in, enter its password if prompted.
