It depends on the generation. Google gives the original Pixel Fold five years of OS and security updates, while the Pixel 9 Pro Fold and Pixel 10 Pro Fold are in Google’s seven-year group. Samsung explicitly promises seven years of Android OS upgrades and security updates for the Galaxy Z Fold6; for the Z Fold7, Samsung lists seven OS versions and includes it in the current monthly security-update scope, under a broader policy of support for up to seven years.
Support periods by foldable generation
“Pixel Fold” can mean the original device or one of the newer Pixel Pro Fold models. Samsung’s update commitments also need to be read by model, rather than treated as one timeless rule for every Galaxy Z Fold.
| Phone | Published support detail | How the term is counted or qualified |
|---|---|---|
| Google Pixel Fold (original) | Five years of OS and security updates. | Google counts from the device’s first availability on the Google Store in the US. It is in Google’s five-year group, not the seven-year group for Pixel 8 and later. Google Pixel Help |
| Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold and Pixel 10 Pro Fold | Seven years of OS and security updates. | Google includes these in its Pixel 8-and-later group and counts from first US Google Store availability. Google says Pixel Drops may also provide new or upgraded features; that does not mean every feature is guaranteed for every device. Google Pixel Help |
| Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 | Seven years of Android OS upgrades and seven years of security updates. | Samsung’s cited statement names the Fold6 and Flip6 and dates the term from global launch. Samsung Gulf Support |
| Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 | Samsung lists seven OS versions in the product specifications. Its security-update scope currently includes the Fold7 among monthly-update models. | Samsung’s security page describes support as extended by up to seven years; it does not state the Fold7’s security term in the same model-specific wording used for the Fold6. Timing and availability vary by model, market, and network provider. Samsung Business Netherlands; Samsung Mobile Security |
What the numbers mean in practice
OS upgrades and security updates are related but distinct
An OS-upgrade commitment covers major Android version upgrades; a security-update commitment covers fixes and enhancements delivered through firmware updates. Google describes its stated periods as covering both OS and security updates. Samsung’s Fold6 support article also explicitly names both. For the Fold7, keep the sources distinct: the product page gives seven OS versions, while Samsung’s security page states an up-to-seven-year program and lists the device in the current monthly scope.
The start date matters
Google starts its clock at first US Google Store availability. Samsung’s Fold6 statement starts the period from global launch. These are different reference points, so a simple comparison of “seven years” does not by itself tell you the exact calendar end date for each phone. Samsung also cautions that update availability and timing vary with model, market, and provider.

Support duration is not a promise of same-day delivery
A published support period describes how long a device is eligible for updates; it does not mean every phone receives every patch at once. Google says Pixel update delivery depends on the device and carrier and that an update may take a few weeks to arrive. Samsung releases monthly, quarterly, and biannual firmware security updates for selected models, and its schedules can vary. The Fold7 is currently listed in Samsung’s monthly-update scope, but regional and provider rollout timing still applies.
Neither policy statement establishes how quickly a specific vulnerability is fixed on one phone, how the two companies compare in security quality, or which patch is installed on a handset today. To check a device’s current patch, use its update screen and compare the displayed security update date with the manufacturer’s current release information.

How to make a fair comparison before buying
- Identify the exact model. Confirm whether the Google phone is the original Pixel Fold, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, or Pixel 10 Pro Fold, and whether the Samsung is a Fold6 or Fold7.
- Compare each type of support separately. Look for an explicit OS-upgrade term and an explicit security-update term. Do not infer a Fold7 security duration solely from its seven OS versions.
- Check when the clock starts. Google uses first US Google Store availability; Samsung’s Fold6 statement uses global launch.
- Account for delivery conditions. Carrier, market, model, and rollout schedules can affect when a particular update reaches a handset.
Official policies answer how long support is intended to last, not whether a particular regional handset has already received a patch. For that, check the phone’s current software status and the manufacturer’s update information for its market.
