Before installing a Samsung Galaxy software update, connect to Wi-Fi, make sure the battery has enough charge, and back up important data as a precaution. Then open Settings > Software update—or System updates on some devices—and follow the update prompt. If you want future update files to use Wi-Fi rather than mobile data, check the automatic-download setting; its label varies by model and region.
Check these settings and preparations first
Find the software-update screen

Open Settings and tap Software update. Some Galaxy devices or carriers use System updates.

Tap the available action, such as Download and install, Check for updates, or Check for software updates, then follow the on-screen instructions.
Menu names can vary by model, Android and One UI version, carrier, and country. Samsung UK documents the Software update route in its Galaxy update guidance; Samsung U.S. also describes checking for updates in its backup and update instructions.

Set automatic downloads to Wi-Fi, if available
On supported devices, open the menu on the Software update screen and look for Auto download, then choose Using Wi-Fi only. Some U.S. devices instead show an Auto download over Wi-Fi switch. Use Wi-Fi-only downloading if you want to avoid using your mobile-data allowance for update files. Samsung UK notes that updates can use a lot of data and take time to install.
Automatic downloading is convenient, while checking manually gives you more control over when a download begins. The exact control and wording depend on the device and software version; if you do not see it, follow the options shown on your Galaxy.

Use a reliable connection and adequate charge
Samsung UK recommends Wi-Fi and a sufficiently charged battery before starting an update. There is no single charge percentage supported as a universal rule for every Galaxy. Samsung Malaysia’s general update guidance, updated September 3, 2026, says to have at least 20% charge; a Samsung U.S. troubleshooting page cites 50% in its troubleshooting context. Those are region- and context-specific recommendations, not a global minimum. Follow your device’s prompt and local Samsung or carrier guidance.
Back up important data as a precaution
Back up important data before updating if you want an extra safeguard. Samsung Japan recommends backing up before an update. This precaution does not mean a routine software update necessarily erases data: Samsung U.S.’s specific warning to back up before a factory data reset applies to recovery from an update problem, not every normal installation.

Keep app updates separate from system updates
Galaxy Store and Google Play app updates have their own automatic-update controls. Changing the phone’s system-update download setting does not change those store settings. To limit mobile-data use for apps too, review the Wi-Fi-only options in each store. Samsung Canada recommends Wi-Fi-only app auto-updates in its Galaxy app update guidance.
Choose between updating on the Galaxy and using Smart Switch

Samsung’s Smart Switch instructions describe the computer-based update route. A cable is only needed if you choose that route; it is not required for the phone’s built-in update process.

Do not disconnect the USB cable or use the device while the update is in progress.

The device may restart, sometimes more than once.
Know what to expect after installation
Update availability and timing can depend on the carrier and rollout, so a release may not appear on every Galaxy at the same time. If you expected an update but cannot find it, check again on the device and consult Samsung or your carrier’s local support. Samsung’s Levant update guidance also notes that availability can vary.

Do not install an update expecting to return to the earlier firmware later. Samsung Malaysia Support, in guidance updated September 3, 2026, says an updated device cannot be downgraded to a previous firmware version under enhanced security policies. The statement is Samsung Malaysia’s regional guidance; check local Samsung support for advice specific to your device and country.
