Neither tablet is a universal winner for students. The Galaxy Tab S12+ is the stronger fit if you want a large screen, an included S Pen and Samsung’s three-app split-screen workflow. The current iPad Air is the more flexible size choice, with 11-inch and 13-inch models, and may suit students already invested in Apple’s ecosystem. Before choosing, confirm that your school’s apps work on the exact device and compare the total local cost, including a stylus if needed.
Which models does this comparison cover?
This comparison covers Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S12+ and Apple’s current iPad Air, available in 11-inch and 13-inch versions. Samsung announced the Galaxy Tab S12 series on September 30, 2026, and said S12+ availability begins October 7, 2026. That is the announced timing, not confirmation of stock at every retailer or in every country. Check local listings for current availability and the exact iPad Air generation before buying.
The product details below come from manufacturer materials, not independent head-to-head student testing. Specifications and battery figures are therefore manufacturer claims, not proof that one tablet performs better in a classroom.
How do their screens and multitasking compare?
| Feature | Galaxy Tab S12+ | iPad Air |
|---|---|---|
| Screen size | 12.6 inches, according to Samsung (2026). | 11 inches or 13 inches, according to Apple’s current specifications accessed in 2026. |
| Display and refresh claims | Samsung lists a Dynamic AMOLED 2X display, up to 120Hz refresh rate and up to 1,600 nits peak brightness (2026). These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. | Not stated in the cited Apple specifications. |
| Split-screen workflow | Samsung describes Multi Window with up to three app sections. Whether a specific app supports that layout depends on the app. | Not stated in the cited Apple specifications. |
The S12+ offers a single large display size, while the iPad Air lets you choose between a more compact 11-inch model and a larger 13-inch one. For students who regularly read a textbook beside notes or reference material, screen area and the apps’ multitasking behavior matter more than the size number alone. Try the required apps’ actual split-screen workflows before deciding; Samsung notes that some apps may not support Multi Window.

Which is better for handwritten notes?
Samsung says an S Pen is included with the Galaxy Tab S12+ at no extra cost. It describes using the pen for note-taking, highlighting and sketching in Samsung Notes or other creativity apps. That makes the S12+ the simpler out-of-box choice if handwriting is central to your coursework.
Apple lists compatibility with Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C) for iPad Air. Compatibility does not mean a Pencil is included: the cited Apple page does not say that one comes in the box. Check the exact iPad Air and Pencil generation, and include the compatible Pencil’s local price in your budget if you need handwriting.
Samsung Notes features have conditions
Samsung describes Note Assist tools for formatting, spell checking, translation and summarization. The cited Notes operation applies to text between 200 and 4,000 characters and requires a Samsung account and an internet connection. Samsung also notes that AI feature terms can vary, so verify the terms that apply to your account and region.

Will your school apps work?
The Galaxy Tab S12 series runs Android 17 with One UI 9, according to Samsung; Apple’s current iPad Air specifications identify iPadOS. Those platform labels do not establish that a particular school app, exam tool or classroom workflow works equally well on both tablets.
- Check your school’s learning-management system and any required classroom apps on the exact tablet model.
- Confirm exam or remote-proctoring software compatibility before buying; a browser alternative may not be accepted by your school.
- Check that your preferred note-taking, reading, creative and file-sharing apps support the features you rely on, including split-screen use.
- If you already use a phone, laptop or cloud services from Apple or Samsung, consider how easily the tablet will fit into that workflow.
What do the battery claims tell students?
Samsung claims up to 21 hours of battery life for the Galaxy Tab S12+ (2026). Apple claims up to 10 hours for iPad Air Wi-Fi web browsing or video playback (current technical specifications accessed in 2026). These figures come from different manufacturers and use different descriptions; they are not a controlled comparison and do not establish which tablet lasts longer in a student’s day of classes.
Samsung also claims a full charge takes about 95 minutes with a 45W adapter. Check what charger is included with the configuration sold in your market before treating that as the setup you will have.

How should students compare the total cost?
There is no meaningful universal price comparison here: prices, education discounts, storage, cellular options, stock and box contents vary by region and date. Compare complete configurations from local listings rather than tablet-only starting prices.
- For the Galaxy Tab S12+, confirm the price and what is included in the package. Samsung says the S Pen is included; check the local listing for other accessories such as a charger.
- For iPad Air, add the compatible Apple Pencil if handwriting is important. Apple’s compatibility listing does not state that a Pencil is bundled.
- Compare the storage and Wi-Fi or cellular version you actually need, along with any student pricing available in your country.
As a market-specific example, Apple’s India education-store listing viewed in 2026 showed ₹83,900 for a 128GB Wi-Fi configuration, with higher prices for other storage and cellular configurations. This is a dated India example, not a current global price or a direct comparison with a Samsung price from another market.
Which tablet should a student choose?
Choose the Galaxy Tab S12+ if
- You want a large 12.6-inch screen and Samsung’s described three-section Multi Window layout.
- You plan to write by hand and value the S Pen being included, rather than buying a compatible stylus separately.
- Your required school and study apps support Android and the workflows you need.
Choose the iPad Air if
- You want to choose between an 11-inch and a 13-inch model.
- You already rely on Apple devices or services and have confirmed your school apps work on iPadOS.
- You are comfortable accounting for a compatible Apple Pencil separately if you need handwritten notes.
If both platforms meet your school’s requirements, decide by the combination of screen size, preferred handwriting setup, ecosystem and local total cost. No independent, like-for-like student test in the cited materials establishes a universal performance or battery-life winner.
