To set up a Galaxy S25 Ultra, connect it to trusted Wi-Fi, follow the on-screen setup, transfer only the data you want, then check for updates and configure security and backups. Menu names and software availability vary, so first check which Android and One UI versions your phone is running.
Before you begin
- Connect to a trusted Wi-Fi network if available, especially if you plan to restore or transfer a large amount of data.
- Keep your old phone nearby and charged if you intend to transfer information.
- Have access to the Google and Samsung accounts you want to use. You can decide during setup which services to enable.
Follow the phone’s setup wizard and use the prompts shown on your device. The exact sequence and wording can differ by software version and region, so do not rely on a single universal screen order.
Check your Android and One UI versions
Before following menu-by-menu directions or troubleshooting a feature, check the software version on your own phone. Samsung’s support hub links to model help and software guidance, but the available screens and labels can change with updates and region. Use the phone’s Settings search for “Software information” or “Android version” if the menu path differs; Samsung also provides Galaxy S25 Ultra support for model SM-S938BZBQINS.
The launch announcement described the S25 series with One UI 7, but that is launch context, not a statement of the software currently installed on every device. For example, Samsung’s update history for model SM-S938B lists Android 17 / One UI 9, released 2026-10-07, with security patch level 2026-09-05. Samsung notes that changes can vary by model, country, or carrier; that record does not establish availability on every S25 Ultra. See Samsung’s SM-S938B software update history.

Transfer data, or start fresh
Samsung Smart Switch is a supported way to move data to a Galaxy phone. Samsung links its transfer guidance from the S25 Ultra support page. Choose the transfer option that suits your old device and review the categories before proceeding.
Use Smart Switch for a guided transfer
Transfer the content you want to keep, such as contacts, photos, or messages, where the available options allow. What moves depends on the source device, data type, app, and permissions. Do not assume every app’s sign-in, protected data, or settings will carry over; you may need to sign in again or configure certain apps manually.
Choose a clean or selective setup
If you want to leave behind old apps, files, or settings, transfer only selected categories or install and configure items yourself. A clean start takes more effort but gives you a chance to review what you actually use. Before wiping or trading in the old phone, confirm that important data is present on the new one and that you can access your accounts.
Choose your Google and Samsung accounts
A Google account connects the phone to Google services and the Play Store, and can be used for Google backup and sync. A Samsung account supports Samsung services and related sync or backup options. You can choose which services to use rather than enabling every option automatically.

Some Galaxy AI features require a Samsung account, according to Samsung’s Galaxy S25 launch announcement; requirements and availability depend on the feature. The announcement’s statement that Galaxy AI features were free through 2025 is historical and does not establish current terms. Check the current feature prompt and terms before enabling or relying on an AI feature.
Install available software updates
Once the phone is online, check for software updates. On many Galaxy versions, the route is Settings > Software update > Download and install, but labels may differ. You can also search Settings for “Software update.” Follow the on-screen instructions, keep the phone charged, and allow time for the restart if one is required.
Check again later if no update appears during initial setup: rollout timing can vary by model, country, and carrier. Samsung’s SM-S938B record is a dated, model-specific example—not a guarantee that the same build is available on your phone. For the applicable regional device guidance, use Samsung’s support hub and check the update screen on the device itself.
Set up lock, biometrics, and recovery
Choose a strong screen lock, such as a PIN or password that is not easy to guess. Add fingerprint or face recognition if you find it convenient, while keeping the lock credential available for situations where biometric unlocking is not offered. Settings paths vary, so search Settings for “Screen lock” or “Biometrics” if you do not see the option where expected.

Review device-finding and recovery options for the Google and Samsung services you use. Confirm that the associated accounts are accessible from another device; recovery tools are less useful if you cannot sign in to the account that controls them. Availability and labels can vary, so use the current menus and Samsung’s regional Galaxy support resources.
Choose what to back up
Review backup settings for both Google services and Samsung services, and decide which content you want saved. Samsung’s model support area links to information about Google Drive backup and Galaxy support, but a backup’s contents depend on the service, settings, app, and account. Check that the backup is enabled and that its last successful date is recent before relying on it to restore the phone.
Backup is not identical to device-to-device transfer: it may not preserve every app’s private data, account session, or setting. For anything important, verify its presence in the relevant app or service rather than assuming a backup covers it.

Make changes based on how you use the phone. You can review notification visibility and privacy controls, display and home-screen preferences, accessibility options, battery settings, and camera defaults. Search Settings for the relevant feature if a menu label or location differs from the instructions you have.

Notifications and privacy
Decide which apps can interrupt you and what appears on the lock screen. Review each app’s permissions and notification settings so that access and alerts match your preferences.
Display, home screen, and accessibility
Adjust text size, screen appearance, home-screen layout, and accessibility features for readability and comfort. There is no single best configuration; use the options that make the phone easiest for you to see and operate.
Battery and camera
Review battery options, including battery protection, if you want to change how charging is managed. Samsung links battery guidance from its S25 Ultra support hub. For the camera, try the defaults first, then adjust settings to suit your preferred balance of convenience, image format, and storage use.
