The Galaxy S23 is the more compact choice; the Galaxy S23 Ultra is built for a larger, sharper display, longer-range optical zoom, an integrated S Pen, and more storage options. Samsung’s published specifications show the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor family in both, so the Ultra’s main differences are size and added hardware—not a different processor tier. Whether those additions justify paying more depends on your priorities and the current price of the exact model you are considering.

What is the difference between the Galaxy S23 and S23 Ultra?

The standard Galaxy S23 is a smaller flagship phone with a 6.1-inch display and a triple rear-camera system with 3× optical telephoto. The S23 Ultra is larger, with a 6.8-inch, higher-resolution display, a 200 MP main camera, a second telephoto camera offering 10× optical zoom, and an integrated S Pen. Samsung lists both with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor family.

How much bigger is the S23 Ultra?

The Ultra’s display measures 6.8 inches diagonally, compared with 6.1 inches on the S23. It is also taller, wider, and thicker: Samsung lists the Ultra at 163.4 × 78.1 × 8.9 mm, versus 146.3 × 70.9 × 7.6 mm for the S23. That difference can matter more in everyday handling than the screen-size figures alone: the S23 is easier to carry and reach across with one hand, while the Ultra gives you more room for reading, video, and pen work.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra 5G, US Version, 256GB, Phantom Black - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • 6.8" Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ display with 1–120 Hz adaptive refresh rate, up to ~1750 nits brightness, HDR10+ support, and ultra-smooth responsiveness for gaming and scrolling.

The Ultra’s display is also sharper on paper, at 3088 × 1440 pixels versus 2340 × 1080. Both models are listed with refresh rates up to 120 Hz; their adaptive ranges differ, with 1–120 Hz for the Ultra and 48–120 Hz for the S23. These are specifications, not a guarantee of how long either phone lasts on a charge.

Does the S23 Ultra have a better camera?

The Ultra has more camera reach and a higher-resolution main sensor: Samsung lists a 200 MP wide camera and dedicated 3× and 10× optical telephoto cameras. The S23 has a 50 MP wide camera and one 10 MP telephoto with 3× optical zoom. Both include a 12 MP ultra-wide camera.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra 5G, US Version, 256GB, Lavender - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • 6.8" Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ display with 1–120 Hz adaptive refresh rate, up to ~1750 nits brightness, HDR10+ support, and ultra-smooth responsiveness for gaming and scrolling.

That makes the Ultra the more capable specification choice for distant subjects, particularly when 10× optical zoom is useful. Samsung also lists digital zoom up to 100× on the Ultra and up to 30× on the S23, but maximum digital zoom and megapixel counts do not, by themselves, establish the quality of a photo. No comparative image testing is established here.

Does the S23 Ultra have better battery life?

Samsung lists typical battery capacity as 5,000 mAh for the Ultra and 3,900 mAh for the S23. The larger capacity is a useful specification difference, but it is not a direct battery-life result: actual runtime depends on factors such as screen use, settings, network conditions, and workload. Do not treat the capacity figures as a promise of a particular number of hours.

Which Galaxy S23 should you choose?

Choose the Galaxy S23 if you want a smaller phone

  • You value a more manageable size and one-handed reach.
  • You want the core flagship specifications without needing the Ultra’s additional camera reach or integrated pen.
  • The S23 is meaningfully cheaper than the comparable Ultra configuration available to you.

Choose the Galaxy S23 Ultra if its extras matter to you

  • You want the larger, higher-resolution screen.
  • You regularly photograph distant subjects and value a dedicated 10× optical telephoto.
  • You will use the integrated S Pen for handwriting or pen-based interaction.
  • You need the higher storage ceiling or the listed 12 GB RAM configuration.

The Ultra is worth more only if those benefits are worth the price difference to you. Samsung’s specifications establish what each model includes, but they do not determine today’s deal value or prove how either phone performs in your particular use.

What to check before buying

  • Exact model and region: Confirm the regional model number and supported configuration; storage options may vary by market.
  • Storage: Compare the actual capacity, not just the phone name or launch base price.
  • Lock status: Check whether the phone is unlocked or tied to a carrier.
  • Condition and battery health: For used or refurbished phones, confirm condition and battery health with the seller.
  • Seller and warranty: Check who is selling the phone, what warranty applies, and whether it is valid in your region.
  • Accessories: If buying a case or screen protector, verify it is specifically for the S23 or S23 Ultra; their dimensions differ.
