Choose a Galaxy S phone if you want a conventional smartphone and prioritize familiar handling and Samsung’s traditional camera options. Choose a Galaxy Z Fold if you will regularly use its larger inner screen for multitasking, reading or video. Choose a Galaxy Z Flip if you want a phone that folds into a more compact shape and offers quick interactions on its cover screen. The right choice depends on the exact models available in your country—not just the S or Z label.
What’s the difference between Galaxy S and Galaxy Z?
Galaxy S phones use the familiar, fixed-screen smartphone design. Galaxy Z phones fold: a Fold opens to reveal a larger, tablet-like inner display, while a Flip closes into a compact clamshell. The deciding question is how you will use that different shape day to day.
Samsung says Galaxy S phones have fewer moving parts because they use a traditional smartphone design. A Fold adds a hinge and folding display, while a Flip also has a folding mechanism. That is a design distinction, not proof that one specific model will last longer than another.
Which series is better for your needs?
Choose Galaxy S for familiar handling and traditional camera options
Start with Galaxy S if you want a conventional phone that opens directly to one main screen, without unfolding it. Samsung says its S models—especially Ultra models—typically have its most advanced conventional camera systems and optical zoom. Treat that as Samsung’s product positioning rather than an independent camera test, and compare the camera hardware on the exact models you are considering.

Choose Galaxy Z Fold for a larger screen you’ll use
A Fold makes sense if you expect to use its inner display regularly for multiple apps, reading, documents or immersive video. Samsung positions the 2026 Fold8 generation around multitasking and larger-screen use: the Fold8 has a 7.6-inch inner display, and the Fold8 Ultra has an 8-inch inner display. A bigger screen is a practical advantage only if it fits your routine; otherwise, you are carrying a more complex folding device without making use of its main distinction.
Samsung also highlights Flex Mode, which lets a Fold partly open and stand on its own for certain hands-free uses, including shooting. The feature does not by itself establish better camera results than an S model.

Choose Galaxy Z Flip for compact folded carry
A Flip closes into a clamshell, making its folded shape more compact than an unfolded smartphone. Samsung describes the 2026 Flip8 as its compact clamshell option and lists a 4.1-inch outer display for Canadian devices. Consider it if compact folded carry and quick cover-screen interactions matter to you; check the model’s cover-screen capabilities before relying on them for particular apps or tasks.

Samsung’s UK comparison, updated 25 August 2026, lists these representative models and specifications. They are not specifications for every S or Z phone, and they should not be assumed to apply in other countries.

Samsung announced the eighth-generation Z series on 22 July 2026: Z Fold8 Ultra, Z Fold8 and Z Flip8. The company presents the Fold8 Ultra as the large-screen productivity model, the Fold8 as a wider 4:3 content canvas, and the Flip8 as the compact clamshell. Those are manufacturer descriptions, not independent assessments of how well each device suits a particular user.

What should you know about cameras, battery and durability?
Camera specifications are model-specific
Do not assume every Galaxy S has a better camera than every Galaxy Z. Samsung says S models, particularly Ultra models, typically offer its most advanced conventional camera systems, but the Fold8 Ultra also has a 200MP main camera and telephoto camera in Samsung’s UK comparison. Compare the actual lenses and features on the two models you plan to buy; a resolution number alone cannot settle image quality.

For devices sold in Canada, Samsung lists the Fold8 Ultra with a 5,000mAh battery and up to 27 hours of video playback, the Fold8 with 4,800mAh and up to 26 hours, and the Flip8 with 4,300mAh and up to 31 hours. These are Samsung specifications and playback claims, not results from an independent, like-for-like test against Galaxy S phones. Battery life in your use can differ.

Folding hardware changes the durability discussion
The S design has fewer moving parts, according to Samsung; a Fold or Flip includes a hinge and folding screen. For the Canadian Fold8 Ultra specifically, Samsung lists IP48 dust and water resistance and claims testing for up to 200,000 folds. These are manufacturer-published specifications and claims, not independent durability findings. Do not apply that rating or fold-test figure to other Z models—or treat it as a guarantee of service life.
How to make a fair comparison before buying
Compare specific devices from the same generation and similar price tier where possible. Then check the details that can change by market or retailer:
- Exact model and country: Samsung warns that models may vary by country. Specifications and configurations listed for the UK or Canada may not match devices sold elsewhere.
- Price and storage: Compare the current local price for the storage capacity you need, including any carrier offer, rather than comparing family names or launch prices.
- Handling and display: Consider each phone’s unfolded and folded dimensions, weight, cover display and whether you will actually use the Fold’s larger screen.
- Camera hardware: Compare the specific cameras and features on each model; do not use megapixel counts as a stand-in for overall results.
- Battery evidence: Keep regional manufacturer specifications separate from independent tests, and avoid treating playback claims as guarantees of everyday battery life.
- Warranty and support: Check warranty coverage and repair options for the exact model in your country, particularly if you are considering a folding phone.
Samsung’s UK comparison is useful for declared specifications and product positioning; its recommendations are vendor-authored.
