The original Samsung Chromebook Plus, model XE513C24-K01US, was a lightweight 2-in-1 Chromebook designed around a sharp touchscreen, a built-in pen and Google Play apps. In hands-on use, its display and flexible form made it appealing for reading, writing and casual Android apps; limited performance under heavier app loads, an unlit keyboard and an inconsistent-feeling trackpad kept it from being an all-purpose laptop.
What the Samsung Chromebook Plus was
Samsung introduced the Chromebook Plus at CES in January 2017 alongside the Intel-powered Chromebook Pro. Google described the pair as its first Chromebooks built from the ground up for Android apps. The Plus was the ARM-based model, aimed at bringing Google Play and a convertible touchscreen experience to a thin, portable Chromebook.
At launch, Samsung Electronics America set a starting price of $449, with availability beginning in early February 2017. That is the historical launch price, not a current used-market valuation or a statement about present-day stock.

How it handled Android apps and everyday work
The OP1-based Plus was comfortable with routine Chromebook work and a modest mix of apps. In its 2017 hands-on account, 9to5Google said it could manage roughly five to eight browser tabs alongside one or two Android apps. More demanding Android-app use could bring stutter, so the Plus was better suited to light multitasking than to keeping many resource-intensive apps running together.

Samsung’s 2017 datasheet promoted access to “more than two million Android apps.” That was an ecosystem claim at the time, not a guarantee that every app would work equally well on this model or remain available today. Android-app compatibility and availability can change over time.
Screen, tablet mode and pen
The 12.3-inch, 3:2 display was the Plus’s strongest hands-on feature. Its 2400 × 1600 resolution looked sharp, and the taller-than-widescreen layout showed more vertical content on web pages. 9to5Google also described the screen as bright. Combined with the 360-degree hinge, it made the Chromebook useful as a laptop, a propped-up screen or a tablet for reading and media.

The pressure-sensitive pen stored in the device and supported handwriting in apps such as Google Keep and OneNote. The contemporary review also noted handwriting-to-text, screenshots, laser-pointer mode and screen magnification. These features made annotation and quick handwritten notes practical; the stylus did not change the Chromebook’s underlying limits when running heavier apps.
What felt less polished
- Performance headroom: The Plus could stutter during heavier Android-app use, limiting its appeal for sustained multitasking.
- Keyboard: The keyboard was not backlit, a drawback for typing in dim rooms.
- Trackpad: 9to5Google found it worked most of the time but felt less reliable than leading Chromebook trackpads.
The magnesium-alloy body struck the reviewer as almost premium, but the overall experience was not uniformly polished: the excellent display and portability sat alongside input and performance compromises.

Ports, storage and charging
The two USB-C ports gave the Plus modern charging and peripheral connections for its time; the microSD slot offered a way to expand beyond the built-in 32GB eMMC storage. It also had a headphone jack. 9to5Google noted that Samsung included a 30W USB-C charger. When considering a replacement charger today, check that it is USB-C and suitable for the device rather than assuming any connector-compatible charger has the right specifications.
Chromebook Plus versus Chromebook Pro
The Plus and Pro shared the convertible concept, high-resolution touchscreen and Android-app focus, but Samsung positioned the Pro as the faster companion model with an Intel processor. The Plus made the more compelling case for portability and value at its $449 launch price; the Pro was the more relevant choice for buyers prioritizing processor performance. The hands-on performance limitations described above are especially important if Android-app multitasking is central to your use.

Is the 2017 Chromebook Plus still worth considering?
As a used device, the original Plus is most interesting if you specifically want an inexpensive, compact convertible for basic browsing, reading, handwritten notes and light app use. Its high-resolution 3:2 screen, pen and flexible hinge remain its defining features. Before buying one, verify the exact model, condition, battery health, included charger and current ChromeOS support status; those present-day details are not established by the 2017 launch materials. Compare the asking price with newer used Chromebooks rather than treating the original $449 launch price as a current value.
